The Bear Facts

September 2, 2017

Good morning! I’m John Meis!

I’m Ashlyn Harrington!

And I’m Nolan Greene! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

School has been going for a week and a half now, and the school year is off to a good start. Enrollment is up at Garrigan this year. Some new students who have transferred in from other schools, and others have come here from other states. In addition to the new students, there’s more good news for the school. Some generous donations provided seed money for improvement projects that are likely to include a new chapel and an all-weather track. The projects won’t go forward until additional funds are available, and those who would like to help out can contact the school for more information.

All the fall sports have begun for the season. The Golden Bear volleyball team won the St. Edmond tournament last weekend, and they’ve also been doing well in individual games. At the core of this year’s team are senior veterans Whitney Hovey, Gracie McGuire, Jenna Boelter, Aubrey McEnroe, Megan Wadle, and Caitlin Thilges. The varsity team also includes sophomores Maddie Meister, Aubree Altman, Katie Noonan, Amanda Miller, Emma Fogarty, and Mackenzie Meister; and freshmen Gracie Elsbecker and Kaylyn Meyers. Good luck to Coach Dave Schnurr and the volleyball team!

There’s a lot of seniors out for cross-country—including Alisa Altman, Lexi Berte, Isabelle Davis, O.J. Hall, Emory Miller, Livia Miller, Trevor Darling, Tommy Kollasch, and John Zeimet. Also running for the Bears are sophomores Jenna Heinen and Bailey Kollasch, and freshmen Ava Bartolo, Kiana Book, Amanda Thilges, Joseph Bonstetter, and Joseph Meis. Coaches Cassie Rowley and Brent DeGroote are heading up this year’s Golden Bear team. Good luck all season to them!

While the Golden Bear football team lost a lot of key players from last year’s state runner-up team, this year’s team seems to be stepping up to take their place. Veteran seniors returning on this year’s team include Drake Buscherfeld, Drew Bacha, Zach Muller, and Jackson Rosenmeyer. Junior quarterback Brad Capesius is also back for 2017.

Other key players to watch are seniors Ben Degen, Myles Koob, and Sam Trainer. Juniors who will be playing hard for the Bears include Sam Vaske, Tristan Ferguson, Eric Thul, and Preston Kohlhaas; as well as T.J. Schnurr, Billy Erpelding, John Capesius, Aidan Koob, John Capesius, John Meis, Gabe Trainer, and Devlin Specht. Also watch for sophomores like Cade Winkel, Marcus Plathe, Colby Graves, and Kurt Condoleon. Good luck to Coach Marty Wadle and the Garrigan football team!

As always the Golden Bear spirit squad will be cheering on the Bears all season long. Again this year the cheer coaches are Erin Miller and Jake Rosenmeyer. This year’s cheerleaders include seniors Kat Wille, Grace Menke, Isabelle Davis, and Olivia Hall; as well as juniors Emma Thul, Cacy Steinman, Madison Illg, Layah DeLange, Laurel Degen, and Megan Besch. Sophomores on the spirit squad are Andrea Pacheco, Carlie Langerman, Carolyn Hough, Jade Garman, Julia Berte, and Jaden Becker; and the group also includes freshmen Cora Ricke, Halle Menke, Emily Lappe, Abbi Heying, and Grace DeLange. Thanks to the cheerleaders for all they do!

The annual calendar drive began yesterday at Garrigan. Again this year students are selling full-color calendars with great pictures and listings of all the school events. The calendars cost just $30, and each one offers 365 chances to win cash prizes—ranging from $35 to $500. Be sure to find your favorite Golden Bear and get your calendar today!

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Ben Degen. Here to tell you about him is Caroline Bradley.

Ben Degen is one of this year’s student council co-presidents, and he keeps busy with lots of other activities. Ben has been to national quiz bowl for three straight years, and he’s hoping for some more academic wins as a senior. Ben has been to state in both football and track. He wrestles in the winter, and he also plays intramural basketball. He’s looking at an engineering-related major in college, and we wish him all the best in the future.

Thanks, Caroline! On our Golden Bear calendar, today the JV and JJV volleyball teams have a tournament at Algona High. Monday is Labor Day, so there’s no school that day.

Tuesday is the first turn-in day for the calendar drive. That night there’s cross-country at Estherville, and volleyball team is in action at Eagle Grove. Also on Tuesday there’s JV football at Estherville.

Wednesday night is the kick-off for family faith formation at St. Cecelia’s. The publications staff has a yearbook workshop on Thursday, and that night the volleyball team hosts Garner—Hayfield—Ventura.

Friday is the second calendar turn-in day. Then that night the football team has their first home game of the season, as they welcome Sioux Central.

That’s the “Bear Facts” for another week. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
