The Bear Facts

September 5, 2015

Good morning! I’m Zac Kibby!

I'm James Quinlin!

And I’m Devin Degen! Thanks for tuning in to the “Bear Facts”, the radio show where each week we keep you in touch with all the news at Bishop Garrigan High School.

Last Friday the Golden Bear football team began their 2015 season by playing a great game against Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. This was the first time in over a decade the Bears beat St. Ed’s, a school that is about twice our size and two classes larger in sports. The Bears dominated throughout this year’s game and ended up winning 39 – 21.

This year’s football team has a good mix of experienced and young players. Returning seniors include multi-year starters Zac Kibby, Will Kellner, Cameron Langerman, and Landen Studer; as well as James Quinlin, Devin Degen, Michael Condoleon, Logan Rosenmeyer, Jedd Magill, and Logan Besch. Other players to watch include juniors Gibson Behr, Max Patkins, Donovan Berte, Andrew Meister, Chase Winkel, Grant Buscherfeld, Joel Vaske.

Other juniors in football are Levi Capesius, Nick Mergen, Chase Hatten. The sophomores include Drake Buscherfeld, Sam Trainer, Ben Degen, Zach Muller, Jackson Rosenmeyer, Drew Bacha, and Myles Koob. Rounding out the team are freshmen Brad Capesius, Tristan Ferguson, Billy Erpelding, John Meis, Sam Vaske, and Preston Kohlhaas; as well as Eric Thul, Gabe Trainer, John Capesius, T.J. Schnurr, Bryce Capesius, and Aiden Koob. Good luck, Bears!

The Golden Bear cross-country team already has two meets under their belt. Last Tuesday at Mason City Newman Ryan Kenyon earned a medal for his 18th place finish. Others in cross-country this year are seniors Mariah Bronk, Kelsey Hovey, and Cady Steinman; juniors Miranda Book, Ben Fogarty, and Andrew Thilges; sophomores Livia Miller, Lexi Berte, Isabelle Davis, John Zeimet, and Trevor Darling; and freshman Sami Darling. Good luck, cross-country!

The Golden Bear volleyball team is the first Garrigan team to play in the Top of Iowa Conference, and last Thursday they played the first game ever in the new air-conditioned Garrigan gym. The Bears have an experienced team that includes returning seniors Carolyn Baxter, Olivia Vaske, Avriel Miller, Nicole Zeimet, Emily Baumann, and Johanna Vaske; as well as juniors Ciera Hall, Megan Brown, and Courtney Kirsch.

Sophomores out for volleyball are Whitney Hovey, Gracie McGuire, Caitlin Thilges, Jenna Boelter, Alisa Altman, Aubrey McEnroe, Emory Miller, Kat Willie, and Gigi Byrkeland. The freshmen on this year’s team are Isabella Capesius, Ashlyn Harrington, Cacy Steinman, Emma Thul, Madlyn Cink, Megan Bronk, Laurel Degen, and Madison Illg. Good luck all season long, Golden Bear volleyball!

Garrigan’s Solid Gold Marching Band is already busy preparing their field show for the season. The band has a tradition of earning excellent ratings at state first place trophies at Algona Band Day, and they’re hoping to continue that this year. The 2015 show is called “One Hit Wonders” and includes the songs “Play That Funky Music”, “Bad Day”, “Gonna Fly Now” and “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”.

Mr. Ken Ferjak is now in his 9th year directing the Solid Gold Marching Band. Miss Katherine Simpson is the assistant band director and designed the choreography for the show. This year’s drum major is senior Mariah Bronk. The band features twenty-four wind players and three percussionists. Good luck to them as they prepare for competition.

The music department is now selling cheesecakes. There are lots of delicious flavors, and the proceeds help to cover the cost of the band and choir’s trip to New York next spring. Cheesecakes will be on sale through September 24, so be sure to order yours now.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Landen Studer. Here to tell you about him is Michael Condoleon.

Landen Studer is one of our student body co-presidents for 2015-16. He has also served as class president all through school. Landen is a football captain who racks up tackles on the line. His team won the intramural championship as juniors last year, and Landen was #2 on the top scorers list. Landen will be off to college next fall, and we wish him all the best in the future.

Thanks, Michael.. On our Golden Bear calendar, the volleyball team has a tournament at Algona High today. They play their first game at 9:00 this morning.

There’s no school Monday due to Labor Day, but that night the JV football team will play at Clarion. Tuesday there’s cross-country at Estherville and the volleyball team is playing at Eagle Grove.

There’s a school mass on Wednesday, and that night is orientation for next year’s confirmation class. Thursday the volleyball team hosts Garner Hayfield Ventura.

Next Friday we’ll have a special assembly on eating disorders. That night the football team plays at Nashua. Then next Saturday there’s volleyball in Emmetsburg and the CYO cross-country meet at Holstein.

That’s the “Bear Facts” for Labor Day weekend. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to catch the show again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
