The Bear Facts
May 7, 2016

Good morning! I’m Landen Studer!

I’m Joseph Espinosa!

And I’m Ben Degen! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

Next Tuesday members of the BGHS choir will be heading to Rochester for a special command performance. The choir will be singing at the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester. They’ll also be performing in the children’s hospital and the cancer radiation centers that are part of the Mayo Clinic. Freshman Bryce Capesius is part of the Garrigan choir. Bryce has received intensive cancer treatments throughout the school year. He finished his radiation this spring and was declared cancer free, and this is part of his way of thanking the people who helped him out and “paying it forward”.

Next Friday the Top of Iowa Conference will hold its annual art show. Art teacher Sheena Pease will be taking twelve students and their work to the exhibition. Students participating include seniors Mackenzie Keith, Nicole Walker, Olivia Vaske, and Cady Steinman; juniors Courtney Noonan, Sarah Skilling, and Courtney Kirsch; sophomores Trevor Darling, Parker Schiltz, Emory Miller, and Emerald Shipler; and freshman Sami Darling. Congratulations, art honorees!

Next Tuesday many non-sports activities at Garrigan will be giving out their annual awards. Among those is the Golden Bear quiz bowl team. Quiz bowl letters will be presented to the seven students who will be heading to nationals this summer: Joseph Espinosa, Levi Capesius, Noah Buscher, Ben Degen, Sam Trainer, Logan Heying, and Gabe Trainer; as well as to Andrew Thilges, Sam Harrington, and Devin Degen. Joseph Espinosa will receive this year’s Coach’s Appreciation Award, while Devin Degen will be the 2016 quiz bowl MVP.

Devin Degen will also be receiving the Outstanding Broadcaster award for his work here on the “Bear Facts”. Devin has announced on twenty of our shows this year, and there’s a good chance he’ll be on next Saturday’s show as well. Other “Bear Facts” letterwinenrs are seniors James Quinlin, Andrew Lallier, Michael condoleon, Zac Kibby, and Carolyn Baxter.

At baccalaureate next Wednesday student council presidents Zach Boelter and Landen Studer will be presenting a gift to honor two long-serving teachers who will be leaving Garrigan after this year. Daryl and Kathy Kohlhaas have been on our staff for around four decades. Both students and many of their parents remember Mrs. Kohlhaas teaching them junior high math and Mr. Kohlhaas teaching classes like Geometry, Math Analysis, and Applied Math. We’ll miss the Kohlhaases, and we wish them well in their retirement.

We finished elections for next year’s student council last week. The new student council co-presidents will be Levi Capesius & Ben Fogarty. Class presidents include Sam Bormann & Miranda Book for the seniors, Jenna Boelter & Lexi Berte for the juniors, Bryce Capesius & Laurel Degen for the sophomores, and Amanda Miller & Cade Winkel for the freshmen. Next year’s representatives are Alex Lichter, Taylor Becker, Ben Degen, Megan Wadle, Emma Thul, Aidan Koob, Mackenzie Meister, and Emma Lichter. Congratulations, student council!

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Nicole Walker. Here to tell you about her is T.J. Schnurr.

Nicole Walker is our next-to-last featured senior in the Class of 2016. Nicole comes to Garrigan from the West Bend area. One of her biggest activities is trapshooting, and over the years she’s been a dance manager and part of the choir. She’ll be off to college next year, and we wish her all the best in the future.

On our Golden Bear calendar this weekend is the Feast of the Ascension, and tomorrow is Mother’s Day. Then on Monday softball practice starts.

Monday the Top of Iowa Conference will hold its conference golf meets. Garrigan hosts the boys meet, while the girls will play at Belmond. Also on Monday the girls track team runs at Eagle Grove.

The choir sings at the Mayo Clinic on Tuesday. That night fine arts, quiz bowl, and the “Bear Facts” will hold their awards banquet. Then Wednesday we’ll have an early dismissal for teacher in-service.

Wednesday night at 7:00 we’ll have baccalaureate mass for the Class of 2016. Thursday there’s district and regional track, with the Bears running at Northwood Kensett.

Thursday and Friday seniors have their final exams. We’ll have a rosary at Seton Friday afternoon, and also on Friday there’s sectional girls golf at Britt.

That’s the “Bear Facts” for this week. Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to join us next week, when we’ll have a special salute to the Class of 2016 here at Bishop Garrigan High School.
