The Bear Facts
September 10, 2016

 Good morning! I’m Grace McGuire!

 I’m Jenna Boelter!

And I’m Whitney Hovey! Welcome to a special edition of the “Bear Facts”, where it’s Homecoming here at Bishop Garrigan High School.

Our Homecoming theme this year is “Welcome to Iowa”, and we’ll be celebrating our home state and our heritage all week long. The special dress themes for the week include ‘Merica Day on Monday, Farm Day on Tuesday, and Iowa College Day on Wednesday. Thursday we’ll have Class Color Day—with seniors in black, juniors wearing white, sophomores donning blue, and freshmen dressed in yellow. Then on Friday it’s the traditional Black & Gold Day.

Both the volleyball and football teams will be taking on North Union for Homecoming, while the cross-country team runs at Emmetsburg. Among the special events will be the coronation Wednesday night at 7:30, our annual Battle of the Classes on Thursday, and Homecoming mass Friday morning. Fr. Paul Eisele, who was in Garrigan’s first graduating class, will be coming back to be the chief celebrant at mass.

Each class will perform a skit or other special entertainment for Homecoming Friday afternoon. Then we’ll have the traditional parade down State Street, which starts at 2pm. After the game Friday night, there’s the annual Homecoming dance, which will be in Friedmann Auditorium. It should be a fun week for everyone.

The Homecoming royalty this year are queen candidates Gracie Behr, Sam Bormann, Ciera Hall, Courtney Noonan, and Sarah Skilling; while the king candidates are Gibson Behr, Levi Capesius, Ben Fogarty, Chase Hatten, and Joel Vaske. We’ll be crowning this year’s king and queen Wednesday night, and as always KLGA will be broadcasting the event.

Last week the cast was announced for Bishop Garrigan’s fall musical, Beauty and the Beast. Stars of the show include Isabelle Davis as Belle and Levi Capesius as the Beast. Other key cast members include Andrew Thilges, Tommy Kollasch, Aidan Koob, Ashlyn Harrington, Laurel Degen, and Rebecca Bonstetter; as well as John Zeimet, Andrew Meister, and Rebecca Bonstetter.

The cast also includes Skyland Meraz, Megan Brown, Sam Trainer, Layah DeLange, Lauren Kenyon, and Amanda Miller; plus Bryce Capesius, Bailey Kollasch, Jordan Hansen, Madison Illg, Precious Robeson, Sam Harrington, Jenna Heinen, Eric Thul, Sam Vaske, Chloe Garman, Caitlin Thilges, Gabe Trainer, and Emma Thul. In addition the entire chorus will be singing as part of the show. Mark your calendar for November 11 and 12 to see Beauty and the Beast.

The Golden Bear football team is off to a great start this year. Before starting district play last night, they racked up big wins against two Class 2-A teams. On the way to a victory over Southeast Valley, senior running back Gibson Behr broke the school record for most rushing in a game. The new mark is 535 yards. Congratulations, Gibson!

The Golden Bear math team is getting ready for the season. This year’s team includes experienced seniors like Logan Capesius, Danielle Plathe, Josh Hamilton, Ben Fogarty, and Levi Capesius. Also on the team are Ben Degen, Caitlin Thilges, Sam Trainer, Logan Heying, John Meis, Gabe Trainer, Emma Fogarty, and Sami Darling. Good luck to Coach David Burrow and the math team!

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Sam Bormann. Here to tell you about her is John Zeimet.

Samantha Bormann has been on student council all through school, and she’s one of this year’s senior class co-presidents. She’s a three-year lettterwinner in cheerleading, she ran the distance medley at state track, and she was an all-area softball player. Sam is also active in Christian Leadership, and you might hear her announcing here on the “Bear Facts”. She plans to major in business at UNI next year, and we wish her all the best in the future.

Thanks, John. On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there’s CYO cross-country today in Holstein. Also today the varsity volleyball team has a tournament in Emmetsburg.

Monday we’ll have “’Merica Day” for Homecoming. The cross-country team runs at Emmetsburg that night, there’s a JV volleyball quad at Lake Mills, and the JV football team plays at Mason City Newman.

Tuesday’s Homecoming theme is “Farm Day”. That night the volleyball team hosts North Union. Wednesday we’ll have Iowa College Day as the dress-up theme, and that day there’s the Top of Iowa Conference Leadership Day.

The Homecoming coronation is Wednesday night. We’ll have our Battle of the Classes on Thursday, with students dressed for Class Color Day. The school board meets Thursday afternoon, and there’s JV volleyball at West Hancock that night.

Friday is Black and Gold Day. We’ll have mass at 8:30 Friday morning and skits in the afternoon. The Homecoming parade will begin at 2pm. Friday night the football team hosts North Union, and the junior class will serve a meal at the game.

The big Homecoming dance will follow the game Friday night. Then next Saturday there’s more volleyball action—with the varsity team at Algona and the JV at North Union.

That’s the “Bear Facts” for Homecoming week. Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to join us again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
