THE BEAR FACTS

November 22, 2003

Good morning! I'm Eric Cassmann!

And I'm John Kohlhaas! Welcome again to the "Bear Facts". Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Bishop Garrigan High School!

Cross-country season is officially over, but there's still at least one more race left for several members of the Garrigan team. Four Golden Bears are down in Des Moines today, running in a real cross-country race at Living History Farms. We say a real cross-country race, because this event involves fording creeks, scrambling over fences, and even climbing up a cliff with a rope. The winners receive seasonal food prizes, like turkeys or the Cornish game hen that Brandon Rowley won for his success last year. Representing Garrigan today are senior John Kohlhaas, junior Donnie Monson, and sophomores Brandon Rowley and Jacob Hellman. Recent graduate Jeff Hellman will also be there, as will coach Daryl Kohlhaas. Good luck to all these runners as they compete at Living History Farms!

The holidays are coming, and Garrigan has several seasonal projects to help out those in need. In preparation for Thanksgiving, the Christian Leadership in Action group is sponsoring a food drive. For the past week they've been collecting canned and boxed goods from students around the school, and right before Thanksgiving they'll be taking all they collected to the food pantry. Another group that's helping out is student council. They'll be brightening the Christmas season for some area children by participating in the county's adopt-a-family program.

The annual magazine drive is over, and the last orders have been sent off to the processing center. If you ordered a magazine through Garrigan, you're subscription will probably begin shortly after New Year's. If you happen to run into any problems, such as receiving double issues on a renewal, we remind you that the school can't help you out directly. Instead you should call the toll-free number on the back of your pink receipt. They'll be able to assist you.

If you didn't get a chance to renew your subscriptions through the school magazine drive, it's still not too late to help out. You can go to the website qsp.com, and order whatever magazines you want there. At check-out, you'll be asked what organization you want to support through your subscriptions. Choose Garrigan, and 40% of your purchase will go right back to the school.

While you're online, you can check out the latest revisions to the BGHS website: garrigan.unlimitedweb.net. Garrigan's home in cyberspace is one of the most comprehensive school websites in America, and Mrs. Sarah Freking's web pages class is constantly busy keeping it all up to date. Recent changes include photos of the fall play, the quiz bowl team, and the state cross-country meet. You'll also find current event calendars as well as breakfast and lunch menus for both Garrigan and Seton.

Other features on the website include online portfolios for students in the Garrigan art department. There are complete pages for every sport and activity available at the school, pages for all the special events all year long, and complete information about everything the school offers. By far the biggest section, though, is for alumni-with page after page reviewing life at Garrigan through the years. You can check out Garrigan online at garrigan.unlimitedweb.net.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Ashley McGuire and Katie Salz. Ashley McGuire comes to Garrigan from the Bancroft area. She has won letters in volleyball and softball, and she's also active in choir. All her hard work helped earn her a spot in the National Honor Society. Ashley wants a career in the health field, and we wish her all the best.

Katie Salz is an Algona native who is active in publications and track. Away from school you might have seen her working at Dairy Queen or heard her playing the organ at St. Cecelia's. Katie will be off to college next year, and we wish her good luck.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, we've got two weeks of events on our Garrigan calendar. Even so, it's still a fairly light calendar. The events begin Monday, when the girls basketball team hosts Sentral.

Next Wednesday we'll have a K-12 Thanksgiving mass at 9am at Garrigan. That special mass is also when we remember all the deceased alumni among our school family. We'll dismiss at 2:15 Wednesday afternoon for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The boys basketball team has a jamboree at Graettinger next Friday. Then Sunday, November 30, marks the start of Advent.

Tuesday, December 2, the quiz bowl team will compete in the computer-based Knowledge Master. That night the girls basketball team hosts Iowa Falls. Then on Thursday the 4th the boys team hosts Emmetsburg.

Friday and Saturday, December 5 and 6, the danz squad will compete at state in Des Moines. Friday night there's varsity basketball at Webster City, and Saturday the quiz bowl team travels to Spirit Lake.

That's the "Bear Facts" for November. We'd like to wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving. Because of the holiday we'll be off next Saturday, but be sure to join us again in two weeks on Saturday, December 6, when we'll be back with all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
