Goodbye Coach Meister

Eugene Marvin Meister was born to Bernard and Thelma (Cox) Meister in Carroll on November 5, 1947. Growing up he attended school at Portland Township Country School. Eugene then attended school in Burt and graduated from St. John's Bancroft in 1965. After graduation he attended Mason City Community College and later graduated from Upper Iowa University.

On June 7, 1969 Eugene was married to Mary Ann Goetz at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. The couple moved to Lake Mills and that summer he coached baseball at Thompson High School. That fall he taught and coached (football, wrestling, and baseball) at Lake Mills High School.

He then attended graduate school at Northwest Missouri State, graduating with his Master's Degree in 1972. The family then moved to Cherokee as he worked for Immaculate Conception Parish. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Boxholm, where Eugene taught and coached. In 1978 he completed his Ed Specialist degree from the University of Missouri.

In 1980 Eugene and Mary Ann moved back to the family farm in rural Burt. He then coached and taught at St. John's Bancroft Catholic School, as well as farmed with the family. In the summer of 1988 Eugene accepted a position as curriculum director at Bishop Garrigan Catholic School. During his time at Bishop Garrigan he served as Business Manager, Principal and President (he was the first lay President). In addition, he served on the State Nursing Board, an appointment from Governor Branstad. He was proud to have served in Catholic Schools the last 34 years in Education before retiring in 2013.

Eugene was very proud of all the young men he mentored and coached. He accomplished some amazing things in his coaching career: 2 state baseball championships, 11 state appearances, several conference and district championships and ended up with 976 wins. He was inducted into the Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1996 and received several Coach of the Year awards for Districts, State and CYO.

Eugene enjoyed farming, traveling, hiking in the Colorado Mountains, activities at school and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was faith-filled as he read daily prayer, biblical reflections and Liturgy of the Hours. For years he and Mary Ann had a Chapel hour at St. Cecelia Parish. As a family, Gene was able to get them to 2 Papal Masses with John Paul II.

Eugene died on Monday, February 22, 2016 at KRHC in Algona, surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 68 after a courageous 6 year battle with cancer.
