Father Francis P. Conway was the first superintendent of Bishop Garrigan High School. Along with all his responsibilities at Garrigan, he was the pastor of St. Benedict Parish in St. Benedict, Iowa.  Today, the Bears football field holds his name, Conway Field.

Garrigan High School was officially granted membership to the North Central Association of Colleges and High Schools (NCA) on March 21, 1961. This was quite a notable achievement, because after only two years in existence, Garrigan's program of education was already considered good enough for the then, new and tougher NCA standards.

As the yearbook states, 1960 - 1961 was "a year of firsts" for the Garrigan band. They got their new uniforms and wore them for the first time in a parade honoring President Kennedy in Fort Dodge. The marching band performed at all the home football games in preparation for their first year of competition in Algona Band Day. They combined with the vocal choirs for the first time at the annual Christmas Cantata which is shown below. The first ever band concert was in March honoring St. Joseph, and Garrigan hosted the C.Y.O. Band Festival for the first time. Mr. John Sterba was the band's conductor.

The Bears varsity baseball and basketball teams had a successful year. Mr. James Geelan was the Bears athletic director.

A couple of Garrigan students work on a project in the chemistry lab. The pictures are not the clearest, but you may be able to see the smoke rising from the sink in the bottom photo. "Uh, Professor. I didn't mean to start a fire."

Garrigan's fine arts department had a great year with the successful productions of the Irish musical "Brigadoon" (right) and the all-school play "It's Great to be Crazy" (below).
