"The smashing of the atom heralded the

coming of the 'space age.' Colonel John

Glenn's orbital flight ushered in that age for

American youth. This historic flight not only

captured their imagination but focused their

attention on the arduous training required of

an astronaut for a successful flight.

The 1962 GARRIGOLD depicts the story

of the training program for Garrigan

students in preparation for their orbital flight

to their Maker."

Garrigan's mixed chorus presented their third annual operetta,

Chonita, about the life of a young girl that has to choose between the

life of a gypsy princess and a wealthy noble family that would take

her in.

Pictured here are the Garrigan football cheerleaders. They

kept busy cheering the Bears on to victory. They worked to

boost school spirit by putting posters up in the halls before

games and lending their enthusiasm to the student body.

The All-School Play this year was the French comedy "The

Miser" by Moliere. All agreed that it was one of the most

entertaining shows yet. Miss Kathleen Griffin was the director.

This year's homecoming royal court is pictured to

the right. King Jerry Krieps and Queen Mary Carol

Gengler started off the homecoming dance right

after the game.

The popular "Christmas Carol" was presented at the

Christmas concert this year along with the choirs and

the band.

Father Donald Ries helped start Garrigan's formal

guidance program this year. The goal was to make

sure each student was living up to their potential

and becoming responsible adults. Fr. Ries took the

title of guidance director along with his many other

responsibilities.

Boys track became more popular this year as a record forty-seven

members ran for the Bears at their eight major meets. They did quite

an outstanding job, especially since the track facilities were not yet

finished.
