And I'm Sylvia Weber! This the "Bear Facts", your weekly radio up-date from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Today is the biggest day of the year for the Golden Bear danz squad. It's time for the state drill team competition, and down in Des Moines this weekend for the big event. They'll be dancing this afternoon and this evening at Veterans' Auditorium, and we hope they'll be bringing back at least one more trophy to add to the many they have gotten over the years. The drill team coaches are Colleen Conway-Schiltz and Carey Harris, and seniors Allison Courtney, Stephanie Hilbert, Jamie Roethler, Laura Seeley, and Monica Studer form the core of this year's danz squad.
In addition to the seniors, eleven other girls are part of all the dance routines. Juniors in danz squad include Lindsey Eischen, Rachel Foth, Kim Frideres, Nikki Loebig, Sarah Schmitt, and Amanda Wolf. The sophomores out for dance are Maria Erpelding and Nicole Krieps, as well as alternates Becca Studer and Melissa Vaske. Rounding out the grils competing at state drill team is freshman Ashley
Shaw. Good luck at state to all the Golden Bear danz squad!
The Golden Bear quiz bowl team also has a busy week. Today they're up in Spirit Lake for one of the oldest quiz bowl tournaments in the region. Seniors Chris Kohlhaas, Bob Brandenburg, Mandy Rahm, Rebecca McGuire, and Adam Rahm are all competing today, as are juniors David Murphy and Steven Kellner; sophomore John Kohlhas; and freshmen Jacob Richter and Matt Courtney. Good luck today to Coach David Burrow and all these quiz bowl players!
There's more quiz bowl action next Wednesday. For the first time ever, Garrigan will be competing at the high school level in the Knowledge Master academic competition. This is a computer-based contest, where students answer 200 tough questions from all fields of knowledge. The Bears will be competing against some of the top students in all fifty states. We'll tell you how they did in an upcoming show.
There's another group that has been busy this fall, the organization called "Christian Leadership in Action". This group used to be known as "Youth Council", but it has expanded its role and changed its name. The group plans liturgies and other religious events at school, and they also sponsor a variety of service projects. Several of their members also attended an area-wide leadership workshop last Thursday. The core leadership group of Christian Leadership in Action includes Ashley Arndorfer, Bridget Buscherfeld, Jamie Roethler, Janel Richter, Andrea Schiltz, and Katie Von Ruden, but thirty-two other students are also involved in the group. Religion teacher Rob Meister oversees their activities.
Basketball season has begun, and again this year at all the games you'll see a group of girls cheering the Bears on to victory. Jayne Krieps and Sara Grandgenett are in charge of basketball cheerleading at Garrigan, and Keshar Nadkarni manages and helps out with the group. This year's cheerleaders include juniors Hillary Frideres, Maria Paterson, and Sylvia Weber, as well as freshman Jill Patterson. Thanks to these basketball cheerleaders for all they do!
Recently one of our former "Bear Facts" announcers was immortalized in a way that not very many people ever are. The Upper Deck company recently released its "premier prospects" set of baseball trading cards, and you can see Golden Bear slugger Brad Nelson on card #24 in that set. On his rookie card Brad is pictured in the uniform of the Milwaukee Brewers, the team that selected him as their fourth-round draft pick last summer. It's cool to see someone we actually know on a real baseball card, and we all wish Brad the very best throughout his career.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Chris Kohlhaas. Here to tell you all about him is

Everyone at Garrigan knows Chris Kohlhaas, though most people don't normally call him by that name. Even Chris usually refers to himself by his long-held nickname "Flounder". Chris has unique personality and sense of humor, and he's not afraid to be different than the crowd. One way he's different is that while most people took Spanish as their foreign language, for the past four years Flounder has been studying Russian. Chris is active in band and choir, as well as quiz bowl, speech, and the math team. He's also a frequent announcer here on the "Bear Facts". Chris plans to study science at Iowa State next year, and we wish him all the best.

Also today there's quiz bowl in Spirit Lake. Tomorrow Advent begins, and the new church year marks the Centennial Year for the Catholic Diocese of Sioux City.
We'll have an advent prayer service on Monday. Then Tuesday the Golden Bear basketball teams will host Eagle Grove. The cross-country team will serve a chili supper during the games.
Wednesday there's the Knowledge Master quiz competition. That night the freshman basketball team hosts Estherville. Then Thursday it's time for the annual Christmas concert and art show.
Next Friday we'll have First Friday adoration in the Garrigan chapel. That night the basketball teams host Clarion-Goldfield, with another chili supper-this time sponsored by the National Honor Society.
Finally this week we'd like to extend our good wishes to Garrigan junior Zac Lickteig, who underwent surgery in Iowa City this past week. Get well soon, Zac-we miss you!
