Today Bishop Garrigan is hosting the Iowa High School Speech Association district individual speech contest. Garrigan has hosted this event each year for more than a quarter century, and this year there are almost four hundred entries in the contest. Schools from as far away as Storm Lake, Newell—Fonda, and Southeast Webster are on hand for the tournament.
Garrigan has sixteen entries today. In Musical Theatre freshman Levi Capesius will be performing “Where Is Love”, Dorothy Kirsch will sing “Macavity”, and Christian Matthews is presenting “Close Every Door”, and Mark Fakler will perform “Run Freedom, Run”. Taylor Illg is entered in prose with “The Coach”, while Hannah Bernhard will read “Science Fiction Aliens” and Dorothy Kirsch presents “Oh Those Modern Inventions”.
There are three Storytelling entries from Garrigan: Levi Bernhard with “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Morgan Frideres with “Fancy Nancy and the Mean Girl”, and Emily Riesenberg with “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”. Christian Matthews is performing a poetry version of “The Three Little Pigs”, and in Literary Porgram Betty Straub is presenting “Mind Games”. Mariana Pacheco will present an Expository Address on Costa Rica, while Hannah Bernhard’s Expos. piece is called “I Spy: Gadgets in Espionage”. The final entries are Levi Bernhard and Mark Fakler, who are entered in Improvisation.
Tomorrow night the Golden Bear danz squad is hosting their annual show. This year’s dance show is entitled “Dancin’ in a Winter Wonderland”, and it features the little girls who have been part of the dance clinic this past week, as well as the co-ed and friends routines. In addition to the state champion Golden Bears the dance team from North Union will be performing, as will students from the Dance Connection and Janet’s School of Baton. The show starts at 6pm in Friedmann Auditorium.
The full danz squad is performing during the state basketball tournament next Wednesday. Then on Thursday five Garrigan dancers will leave for Des Moines to be part of the All-Iowa Honor Drill Team. Anna Hohmeister, Mariah McCall, Patricia Brandt, Katelyn Fogarty, and Megan Lappe were selected for this honor. Congratulations to them and to Coaches Coleen Conway-Schiltz and Barb Stence.
This coming Friday the BGHS music department will be hosting the annual pops concert. In addition to the full band and choir, pops will feature the show choir, jazz band, and vocal jazz ensemble. There are also several solos and small group selections that include performers like Nick Bronk, Hannah Bernhard, Jake Hamilton, Corey Weydert, Mark Fakler, Sean Hart, and Levi
Capesius.
Other pops performers include Carolyn Baxter, Sean Hart, Neal Koob, Christian Matthews, Kirstin Condoleon, Jedd Magill, LeeAnn Eischen, and Mariah Bronk. The show begins at 7pm next Friday night. You can call ahead to reserve table seats or just show up Friday night to sit in the bleachers.
In preparation for pops concert, next Wednesday Garrigan’s vocal jazz ensemble will be attending a special clinic in Clear Lake. Special guests at the clinic will be the nationally known a cappella group Tonic Sol-Fa, which is led by Garrigan graduate Shaun Johnson. Best wishes to vocal jazz and everyone involved in pops concert!
Next Tuesday twenty-two of Linda Peterson’s advanced Spanish students will take a field trip up to Minneapolis. They’ll explore Hispanic neighborhoods, shop at the Midtown Global Market, and watch a play in Spanish. They’ll also enjoy some authentic Mexican food before heading back to Algona.
The quiz bowl team is still looking for registrations for their fourth annual Community Quiz Bowl. Teams of people ranging from middle school through adult are welcome to participate in the tournament, which will be Friday night, March 14. Registration forms are on the Garrigan website, and for more information you can contact Tony Kollasch at 320-0101.
Garrigan senior Brayton Loss was honored last week with a special visitor to the school. The visitor represented the Shriners, and he was there to honor Brayton’s selection to the 2014 Iowa Shrine Bowl football game. Brayton, an all-state kicker
and linebacker for the Golden Bears, will compete for the north team in the Shrine Bowl. Congratulations,

This week’s Senior Spotlight shines on Connor Garman. Here to tell you about him is Brittany Kirsch.
Of all the classes at Garrigan, Connor Garman’s favorites are his science classes. His love of science has made him one of the schools top competitors in the Envirothon. Connor biggest activity is intramural basketball, and he’s also one of the biggest fans you’ll see cheering at every Golden Bear game. Connor is a fun-loving guy who loves hanging out with his friends. We wish Connor all the best in the future.
Thanks, Brittany! In our Golden Bear calendar today Garrigan is hosting the district speech contest. We’re taking a break from intramurals tomorrow. They’ll resume next week. At 6:00 tomorrow night the danz squad will have their annual show.
Tuesday the advanced Spanish students will head up to Minneapolis. Wednesday Lent begins, and we’ll have a Service of Word and Ashes at St. Cecelia’s that morning. The vocal jazz ensemble will be in Clear Lake that day for their clinic.
The danz squad performs at the state basketball tournament on Wednsday. They’ll dance at halftime of the 1:30 and 3:30 games that day.
Thursday the All-Iowa dancers leave for Des Moines. Also that day Nicole Behr, Aisha Miller, Nathan Krieps, and Chris Loss will be in Des Moines for the Iowa legislative forum.
Thursday afternoon the juniors will be at a college fair over at Algona High. Then on Friday it’s time for the annual pops concert.
