Good morning! I'm Chris Kohlhaas!
And I'm Mike Loebach! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Homecoming is just around the corner. Last week the BGHS Student Council made plans for Homecoming, 2001, which will be the week of September 16 - 22. This year's theme is "Garrigan's Animated Party", which is a celebration of cartoons. On Thursday the seniors voted for the Homecoming royal court. The 2001 Queen candidates are Ashley Arndorfer, Allison Courtney, Stephanie Hilbert, Jamie Loebig, and Monica Studer. Joining them on the royal court are king candidates Joe Bartolo, Luke DeWaard, Andy Kardoes, Andy Meyer, and Nolan Thilges. Congratulations!
There was another election this week, too. The BGHS Class of 2005 elected their student council representatives. The freshman class co-presidents are Bobby Murphy and Matt Vitzthum, and the new representatives are Rose Mayer and Matt Courtney. Congratulations to everyone!
Fall sports have started for the year. Last Tuesday the cross-country began their season by running in the Newman Invitational at Mason City. Junior Jeff Hellman ran well and ended up in fifth place overall, with a time of 18 minutes, 46 seconds. Sophomore John Kohlhaas finished in 28th place, while Matt Courtney was 29th. The Golden Bear boys' team also includes seniors Michael Loebach and Jason Walker; juniors David Murphy and Matt Studer; and sophomores Tyler Rolling, Eric Cassman, and Mason Elbert. Three girls are also out for cross-country. They are Cathy Hellman, Hillary Frideres, and Sylvia Weber. Good luck to Coaches Daryl Kohlhaas and Greg Ahlers and the Golden Bear cross-country team!
The volleyball team began their season on Tuesday with a big win over Estherville. Seniors Ashley Arndorfer, Jenna Becker, and Mindy Buscher are at the core of this year's varsity team. Backing them up are juniors Lisa Even, Chelsie Wood, Jenna Kollasch, Amy Rahm, Jenny Erpelding, Amanda Wolf, Maria Paterson, and Janel Richter; and sophomores Jenna Kollasch and Lindsay Becker. The JV Bears include Amy Rahm, Ashley McGuire, Molly Black, Nettie McGuire, Rachael McGuire, Michaela Mescher, Katie Salz, and Nellie Fowler. Good luck to Coaches Dave and Bo Schnurr and the volleyball team!
The volleyball team is one of many Golden Bear sports teams that has been honored by the girls' athletic union for distinguished academic achievement. In fact, Greg Ahlers recently calculated that since 1998, every single girls' team in the school received academic honors. To qualify, team members must have a grade point of at least 3.0. Congratulations, girls!
Football season begins tonight when the Bears travel to Ft. Dodge to play the St. Edmond Gaels. This should be another good year for the Bears, who are expecting good things out of senior veterans like Andy Kardoes, Kyle Wieland, and Luke DeWaard, Adam Rahm, and Andy Meyer. Other top seniors include Tony Detrick, Brian Welp, Mark Rasmussen, Chuck Bormann, and Scot Miller. They've just a few of more than forty young men who are out for football this year. We wish Coach Marty Wadle and all the Golden Bears good luck all season long.
Our senior spotlight this week shines on Kevin Marso and Bridget Buscherfeld. Here with the details on them is
Mike McAlpine.
Kevin Marso comes to Garrigan from the Bode area. At Garrigan he enjoys classes like Accounting and Math V. When he's not at school, you might see Kevin out hunting or working at Amberwave Communications. Kevin plans to major in business at college, and we wish him all the best.
Bridget Buscherfeld works at Subway in Algona. She is probably best known for her accomplishments in music, but she's also active in softball. Bridget's favorite classes are art and choir, and when she's not at school she likes spending time with her friends. She plans to attend Morningside College next year, to major in business or medicine. Good luck, Bridget!
Thanks, Mike! On this week's Golden Bear calendar, this morning there's volleyball at Algona High. Then tonight the Golden Bear football team plays Ft. Dodge St. Edmond.
There's no school Monday because of the Labor Day Holiday. Tuesday the freshman football team takes on North Kossuth while the cross-country team runs at Estherville. Also on Tuesday we'll have auditions for the fall musical, "Fiddler on the Roof".
Wednesday there's volleyball at Hampton/Dumont. Thursday musical auditions continue, and that night we'll have a meeting for sophomores and juniors who are preparing for confirmation.
Next Friday is the big Garrigan/Algona football game. The Bears are hosting this year, and before the game the junior class will be sponsoring a tailgate supper.
That's the "Bear Facts" for this week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in again next week, when we'll bring you more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
