And I'm Jill Johnson! This is the "Bear Facts", the radio show where each week we keep you in touch with all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Last weekend the Golden Bear danz squad went down to Carver Hawkeye Pavillion in Iowa City for the regional drill team competition, and they ended up bringing home two trophies. That's especially impressive since the regional contest is not classed, so the Bears were competing directly against 4-A schools like West Des Moines Dowling and Iowa City West. Garrigan took home the second place trophy in the pom division and third place in dance-funk-jazz, among nearly twenty schools entered in each division. Congratulations to Coach Colleen Conway-Schiltz and the danz squad!
There are two other trophies sitting in the main lobby of the school that another group won last weekend. They belong to the math team, who had an outstanding day at the Iowa Falls Math Competition last Saturday. Garrigan won the 9th and 10th grade division, and they finished in second place in 11th and 12th grades. Eight out of eleven Golden Bears competing qualified for the state math competition, which will be held next April. State qualifiers include seniors Chris Kohlhaas and Rebecca McGuire; juniors Steven Kellner, Rosalind Kirsch, and Jeff Hellman; sophomore John Kohlhaas; and freshmen Matt Courtney and Samantha Kirsch. Also competing were Eric Cassman, Cathy Hellman, and our exchange student Christoph. Congratulations to Coach Daryl Kohlhaas and the math team!
We're hoping for more success today at the state speech
contest. Thirty-five Garrigan students are over in Spencer this morning for the state large group competition. While this week's ice and snow has reduced their rehearsal opportunities, we're still hoping they'll do okay at state. Among those competing are seniors Rebecca McGuire, Bob Brandenburg, Mandy Rahm, Michael Loebach, Adam Rahm, and Mark Rasmussen. There's a large group of juniors, including Beth Becker, Amanda Wolf, Sylvia Weber, Sarah Erdman, Rachel Foth, Kim Frideres, and Sarah Schmitt.
Other juniors in speech are exchange student Christoph, Andrea Schiltz, Maria Paterson, Jenna Hansen, Jeff Hellman, Keshar Nadkarni, David Murphy, Steven Kellner, and Rosie Kirsch. Nine sophomores are also competing at state speech. They are Josh Broesder, Melissa Vaske, Eric Cassman, Amber Golwitzer, Cassie Recker, David Rasmussen, John Kohlhaas, Rachel McGuire, and Brooke Myers. Rounding out the speech team are freshmen Brianne Donahe, Kristi Reding, and Amanda Thompson. Good luck at state to Coach Mary McCall and the speech team!
Intramural basketball is now in full swing. After three weeks two groups of seniors have risen to the top with undefeated 3 - 0 records. Ben Meyer's team includes Nick Lane, Tyler Erpelding, Steve Goede, Andy Kardoes, Brian Welp, and Tyler Trenary. They've scored an average of 153 points per game, and Steve, Ben, Nick, and Tyler are all among the top ten scorers overall. Scot Miller's team also has four of the top ten scorers: Luke DeWaard, Kyle Wieland, Adam Rahm, and Scot Miller himself. Together with Matt Golwitzer, Greg Fowler, Mike Loebach, Mark Rasmussen, and Tim McCleish, they have averaged 137 points per game. Mason Elbert's team is in third place right now, while Zac McGuire's team is in fourth. Intramurals will have this weekend off, since there were no weather cancellations in January, but the games will continue through the end of March.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Tony Detrick and Alison Dornbier. Here with the details is

You probably know Tony Detrick best for his accomplishments on the football field. He's been one of the top Golden Bear defensive linemen for the past two years. Tony also enjoys band and track, and every year he participates in improvisational acting in speech. Tony will be a college man next year, and we wish him good luck.
Be sure to spell Alison Dornbier's name right-there's just one "L" in "Alison", not two. Whatever the spelling, though, Alison has been a big part of the success of the Golden Bear girls' basketball team this winter. Whenever it's been a slow night for other players, she's really stepped up her game. Alison is also active Alison's other activities include Christian Leadership in Action, and in the past she was active in track. She'll also be off to college in the fall, and we wish her all the best.
Thanks, Kim! On this week's Golden Bear calendar, there's the state speech contest today at Spencer. Also today there's a fifth and sixth-grade basketball tournament here at Garrigan.
Monday the C-team basketball squad plays at Humboldt. Then Tuesday the fine music and art teachers will be in Early as join with other teachers from around the Sioux City diocese to write curriculum in those areas.
Tuesday night the JV and varsity Bears host Hampton/Dumont. At the games you can enjoy a potato bar supper sponsored by the award-winning Golden Bear danz squad.
Wednesday night Seton Grade School will host their annual Education Fair, and we encourage everyone to come to the Rochleau Center and the elementary gym to check out all the projects. Also on Wednesday we'll have try-outs for the BGHS spring play.
Play try-outs continue on Thursday. Then Friday night the Golden Bear basketball teams will be traveling to Eagle Grove.
