And I’m Abbie Capesius! Welcome once again to the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

This is our second show of the new school year, but chances are you didn’t hear last week’s show. We recorded it and sent it off to KLGA, but a mix-up at the radio station kept it from airing. That gives us a chance to remind you that if you miss the “Bear Facts” for any reason, you can always listen to the show online at bggoldenbears.org. Not only are the recent shows there, but there’s also an enormous archive of past scripts and broadcasts.

There was actually quite a lot of news on last week’s show. We reviewed the successes of our baseball, softball, track, golf, and trapshooting teams. We noted a couple of other awards students had won, we looked at new staff members, and we saluted Violet Bode, one of our student council co-presidents. Fall sports have begun. The Golden Bear football team should be much improved this year. Seven seniors are returning to the squad this year: Logan Nemmers, Sam Plathe, Caden Roethler, Benjy Trainer, Drew Lappe, Brody Ludwig, and Justin Bauer. Juniors with experience include Trayton Cink, Owen Murphy, Wyatt Rosenmeyer, Drew Muller, Andrew Lichter, Keaton Helleseth, Thadd Kollasch, Daniel Meis, Nick Thul, Isaac DeLange, Scott Bormann, and Nick Leerar.

Sophomore Tate Foertsch was quarterback for the Bears in their opening game, while Ethan Marso and Carter Schwab started on defense. Other younger Bears include sophomores Kyle Bormann, Carter McGregor, Kollyn Wiemers, Lucas Behounek, Kayden Graves, and Konner Kramer. The freshmen in football are Michael Joyce, Dalton Klenz, Weston Rosenmeyer, Carson Pfeffer, Marshall Bormann, and Leo Snyder; plus Matt Besch, Madden Miller, Sawyer Herrick, Nate Leerer, Aiden Deitering, Gibson Menke, Eli Casey, and Milo Geving. Good luckm football!

While the volleyball team lost some key players from last year, they still have a strong team. Seniors out for volleyball are Reagan Murphy, Violet Bode, Avery Lichter, Madelyn Bronk, Kyra Deike, and Alaina Casey. Also playing varsity are jniors Zoe Montag, Hanna Merron, Molly Peterson, and Alaina Bormann; and sophomores Alyssa Haugland, Emmi Bartolo, and Sacha Alesch. Freshman Graclyn Eastman has already made big contributions to the varsity team.

The younger volleyball players also include sophomores Hailee Reutzel, Allison Denker, and Carley Nielson. The other freshmen out for volleyball are Shiloh Trainer, Bree Ludwig, Cora Deardeuff, and Kylie Capesius; as well as Josephine Joyce, Sheila Reding, and Eva Kohlhaas. Best wishes to the volleyball team!


There are ten runners out for cross-country this fall. The team includes a lot of experience, with seniors Ethan Kuper, Abbie Capesius, Nathaniel Darling, and Lauren Swift. Juniors in cross-country are Schyler Morse and Sophie Meraz. The team also features sophomores Amaury Thomas, Rosanne Curtis, and Gabe Swift; and freshman Corbin Darling. Go, cross-country!

Homecoming 2023 is just around the corner. The event will take place the week of September 11 – 15, with the theme “We Got the Beat”. Last week the seniors nominated this year’s Homecoming royal court. The 2023 queen candidates are Violet Bode, Abbie Capesius, Avery Lichter, and Ella Schaaf; while the king candidates are Justin Bauer, Nick Laubenthal, Logan Nemmers, and Sam Plathe. Congratulations to our royalty!

Last week we featured one of out student council co-presidents on our Senior Spotlight. This week we feature the other, Logan Nemmers. Here to tell you about him is Brendan Plathe.

Logan Nemmers is a lineman on the Golden Bear football team. He plays post in basketball, and he’s also a thrower in track. Logan’s talents go beyond sports, though. He’s also in choir, including the jazz choir, he’s placed at state in DECA, and he’s also been in drama and publications. Logan is also one of our student council co-presidents, and he’s on the Homecoming royal court. We wish Logan an outstanding senior year!

Thanks, Brendan! On our Golden Bear calendar, there’s a JV volleyball tournament today at Algona High. Monday there’s no school because of the Labor Day holiday.

Monday night the JV football team plays at Newell—Fonda. Tuesday morning we’ll have mass. That night there’s cross-country in Estherville, and the volleyball team plays at Eagle Grove.
 

There’s also a swim meet in Boone on Tuesday, and the swim team is in Fort Dodge on Thursday. Thursday night there’s a home volleyball game, with the Bears taking on Garner Hayfield Ventura.
 

The kick-off for the Walk and Pray event will be next Friday. The football team has their first home game that night, as they host North Iowa. Finally next Saturday there’s cross-country at Holstein.
