Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
If you go out to Garrigan today, you'll see a lot of cars in the parking lot, but nobody's likely to be around. That's because around 100 Garrigan music students are in New York for the 2003 music tour. The arrived yesterday after a 24-hour bus ride. Today they're seeing the sights of Manhattan. It's not all fun, though; it really is a music tour. Band members are performing aboard the battleship Intrepid, while choir members will be sharing their talents at church. The musicians will be out east through tomorrow, and the should return to Algona around 7:00 Monday night.
Things have been going very well for the Golden Bear golf teams. Both the boys and the girls teams are off to a good start this year, with big wins over their area rivals. On the girls side state tournament veteran Andrea Schiltz is back at the core of the team. Other seniors include Katie Von Ruden, Jenna Hansen, and Amanda Wolf. The team also includes juniors Ashley Berte, Michaela Mescher, Amanda Elbert, and Elizabeth Bormann; sophomores Ashley Shaw, Debbie Kohlhaas, and Lindsay Schiltz; and freshmen Alllison Brandenburg, Kathy Kohlhaas, Sara Kunkel, Stephanie Shaw, Amanda Steier, April Wolf, and Ana Pal. Dean Capesius is the girls golf coach at Garrigan.
On the boys side, senior Alex Vaske and junior Jason Lallier are the veterans. The rest of the team is all freshmen and sophomores-including Tim Richter, Jace Boekelman, Noah Devine, Ross Froehlich, Brad Thompson, Dan Garman, Bobby Geelan, Matt Kollasch, and Eric Goodman. Roger Froehlich coaches boys golf. Good luck to both the girls and the boys through the rest of the season.
We had class elections for student council this past week. The closest election was in the freshman class, where the team of Gavin Freking and Spenser Rahm edged out both Ashley Waller and Melissa Hilbert and Liz Mayer and Joe Rahm to become co-presidents of the Class of 2006. In the sophomore class, Matt Vitzthum and Derek Tindall cruised to victory over Nicole Reding and Rose Mayer. This year's juniors chose Michaela Mescher and Molly Black as their co-presidents. They beat out Mason Elbert and Colby Reding, as well as Josh Broesder and Lisa Thilges. Next Tuesday we'll finish up the election season, as everyone votes for student council representatives.
Last month eight Garrigan students participated in the North Central Conference Art Show. The students who went felt the official program was pretty stupid, but they enjoyed seeing the artwork other kids around the area had made. Freshman Lizzie Mayer won top honors from Garrigan for a mosaic table top she had designed. Others entered in the show included seniors Rosalind Kirsch and Justin Fickbohm; juniors Cassie Recker and Kris Sutter; and sophomores Samantha Kirsch, Rose Mayer, and Brianne Donahe. Congratulations to these students.
It's hard to believe, but graduation really is just around the corner. Next Friday will be the last full day of classes for the Class of 2003. The seniors will finish things up with tests the following Monday and Tuesday, and then they'll say goodbye. Baccalaureate mass will be Thursday night, May 15, and graduation is Sunday, May 18. This year Jeff Hellman will deliver the farewell address on behalf of the seniors. We'll have more information on graduation on upcoming shows.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Zac Rogers and Shannon DeVries. You might see Zac Rogers working if you catch a movie at the Algona Theatre. In the past he worked at Sister Sarah's, and he has also participated in football and basketball. Zac plans to attend Iowa Lakes Community College next year, and he hopes to major in zoology.
Shannon DeVries is a four-year football player who has won honors for his efforts. In the past he also played baseball and basketball. Shannon works at Fareway and at the Maple Park Apartments. He also plans to go to Iowa Lakes, where he will study automotive body collision and paint technology. Good luck to both Shannon and
Zac.
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, the music tour continues all weekend. Today from 8am to noon Garrigan's health occupations group is sponsoring a big rummage sale in the Garrigan gym.
Monday the golf teams play Eagle Grove, with the girls at home and the boys away. Baseball practice starts that day, and that night the band and choir return from New York. Then Tuesday we'll have student council representative elections.
Tuesday night the boys track team runs at Algona, and Tuesday and Wednesday there are try-outs for
the 2003-2004 danz squad. Also on Wednesday the golfers face Iowa Falls and Clarion Goldfield.
Wednesday is Grandparent Day, when we hundreds of area senior citizens will be having lunch at school with their grandchildren. Then on Thursday there's the spring music concert and art show.
Next Friday the boys track team hosts the Adam Sundall Relays while the girls run at Lake Mills. Also that night there's state large-group music contest at Jewell. Finally next Saturday the girls golf team plays at Spencer.
