The Bear Facts

November 3, 2012

Good morning! I’m Angelica Brosnan!

I’m Kendra Roethler!

And I’m Harli Eggers! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

Today is the state cheerleading competition. Coach Erin Miller and the Golden Bear spirit squad are down in Des Moines today. They’ll be performing between 11:00 and noon at the Jacobson Building on the state fairgrounds. Parking is free, but there is an $8 admission to the contest. The cheerleaders will have just 2½ minutes to demonstrate their skill.

The Golden Bear competition cheer squad includes Noelle Vitzthum, Mariah McCall, Anna Hohmeister, Melissa Kellner, Savanah McNertney, and Hannah Boisjolie; as well as Nicole Behr, Aisha Miller, Haley Froehlich, Mallory Schiltz, Hunter Theesfeld, and Megan Lappe. Kylie Fox serves as alternate. Good luck at state, cheerleaders!

Also today danz squad members Logan Kumm and Makayla Foertsch are down in Newton for the state solo dance competition. Garrigan danz squad coach Colleen Conway-Schiltz is judging at state, though in a different class than her team members are competing in. Admission at state is $5. Good luck at state, Logan and Makayla.

Garrigan has four teams entered today in the Algona quiz bowl tournament. This contest was cancelled last year because of a personal tragedy, but two years ago the Bears won it all. They’ll face stiff competition today from schools like Mason City Newman and Ankeny, but they’re hoping to again do well in the tournament.

One of today’s teams features seniors Dustin Miller, Grace Steil, and Allison Frideres, together with Gaby Steil and exchange student Sia Suttisirikal. Another team includes sophomores Emily Riesenberg, Taylor Frideres, Kaitlyn Fogarty, Morgan Frideres, and Betty Straub.

Garrigan’s third team today features junior Jake Hamilton and Levi Bernhard, together with sophomores Hannah Bernhard, Zach Kollasch, and Tony Kollasch. Rounding out the group is a team that includes sophomore Taylor Illg, plus freshmen Joseph Espinosa and Devin Degen. Good luck today, quiz bowl!

Halloween was this past week, and one of the big activities Garrigan’s Christian Leadership in Action group does each year is trick-or-treating to get donations for the Kossuth County Food Pantry. Last Wednesday dozens of Garrigan students collected food donations. They even picked up some contributions from pro wrestler Johnny Fitness. Thanks to everyone who donated to the food drive.

We’ll be taking in some more food pantry donations next Friday night. The student council is sponsoring a fall harvest dance. No money will be charged for admission, but we’re collecting food donations at the entrance—just another way we can help out those in need.

Tonight is your last chance to see the BGHS fall musical. The music and drama departments have been working hard on this year’s production of The Music Man. Almost all the floor seats are sold out, but there’s still bleacher space available for $5. Showtime is 7pm, so be sure to come over to Friedmann Auditorium tonight to see The Music Man.

The annual BGHS magazine drive is underway. From now through November 15 students will be selling magazine subscriptions. Prices are the lowest you’ll find anywhere, and when you order through the school 40% of everything you buy stays right here at Garrigan. You can order in person from any Garrigan student or go online through a link at the bottom of the “What’s New” page on our website. Be sure to help out the school by renewing your subscriptions today.

This week’s Senior Spotlight shines on Sarah McCall and Harli Eggers. Here to tell you about her is Makayla Foertsch.

Harli Eggers is planning to graduate from Garrigan at Christmas, and when she does she’ll already have several college credits for taking courses like Psychology and Statistics. Her favorite class is Peer Helper, and when she’s not at school she likes going to concerts and spending time with her friends. She’ll be at Iowa State next spring, where she’ll be majoring in athletic training, and we wish her good luck.

Sarah McCall is also planning to graduate early, and she’ll be off to Iowa State after Christmas, too. In her years at Garrigan, Sarah has been in lots of activities—like cross-country, basketball, speech, and student council. She’s also racked up lots of college credits early, and she’ll be double majoring in economics and agribusiness at college. Best wishes after high school, Sarah!

Thanks, Harli! On our Golden Bear calendar today there’s state cheerleading in Des Moines, state solo dance in Newton, and quiz bowl at Algona High. Tonight is the final performance of The Music Man.

Daylight Savings Time begins tomorrow morning. Also tomorrow is the benefit for art teacher Steve Brosnan. It starts at 11:30am at Trinity Lutheran Church.

The magazine drive continues all next week. We’ll have parent—teacher conferences Monday and Tuesday night. High school conferences will be in the Rochleau Center at St. Cecelia’s.

Monday many Garrigan students will take a field trip to Mall of America as a reward from the calendar drive last September. Tuesday is election day, and that night the School Improvement Advisory Committee will meet.

We’ll have a school mass on Wednesday. Then Thursday there’s a jeans day at Garrigan. There’s no school next Friday, and that night student council will sponsor their fall harvest dance.

That’s the “Bear Facts” for this week. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to listen in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
