The Golden Bear quiz bowl team will be heading back to nationals. This past week the team officially made the decision to make their thirteenth trip to the National Academic Championships. They made their decision after winning their third tournament of the year. Last Saturday the Bears won their division at the Crusader Quiz Bowl at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City. Garrigan had a perfect record after the preliminary rounds, and the 1385 points they scored was higher than any team in the tournament. They beat LeMars Public in the championship game.
The 30th Annual National Academic Championships will be held June 9 – 11 in Chicago. Something new this year is that the Bears are taking both varsity and junior varsity teams to nationals—since they have qualified at both levels. Nine players have qualified to represent the Bears: seniors Rachel Berte, Philip Detrick, and John Richter; junior Allison Frideres; sophomores Levi Bernhard and Jake Hamilton; and freshmen Hannah Bernhard, Zach Kollasch, and Tony Kollasch..
To help raise money for the trip to Chicago, the quiz bowl team will be hosting their second community quiz bowl. Members of the community are invited to form teams to compete in a friendly trivia competition. The event will be Friday, March 23rd at Garrigan. The quiz bowl team is doing all the organization for the event, including compiling all the questions. Entry costs just $25 per team, and up to five people can compete at a time on a team.

Today the Golden Bear speech team is competing at the Iowa High School Speech Association state large group contest in Spencer. Seven entries from Bishop Garrigan will be performing this afternoon. They include the group mime “Amusement Park”, acting ensembles called “A Moustache and a Mattress” and “Taking Off”, a short film entitled “Uninvited”, the musical theatre selection “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid”, and two improvisation groups.
Students performing today include seniors Philip Detrick, Lizzy Hohmeister, Rachel Berte, Austin Salz, Sam Evers, and John Richter; plus juniors Shawn Vaske, Alex Matthews, Amelia Golwitzer, Matthew Fakler, Logan Kumm, Alissa Kirsch, Hannah Boisjolie, Makayla Foertsch, and Melanie Mergen. Also performing at state are sophomores Neal Koob, Levi Bernhard, Corey Weydert, Sean Hart, and Jake Hamilton. Best wishes to the speech team!
Today is also a big day for Garrigan junior Sean Dyson. Sean is competing in basketball in the regional Special Olympics. Sean has competed in many Special Olympics events in his years at Garrigan—including bowling and various track and field competitions. We wish him the best of luck in basketball today.
ast week the Golden Bear girls basketball team joined Coaches vs. Cancer in a pink-out for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Players, coaches, and fans all dressed up in pink to support cancer awareness, and the team raised more than a thousand dollars for cancer research. The basketball players join the football and volleyball teams and cheerleaders, all of whom participated in pink-outs earlier this year.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Philip Detrick. Here to tell you about them is Haley Froehlich.
We’ve already mentioned Philip Detrick’s name twice on this week’s “Bear Facts”. Philip will be making his second trip to national quiz bowl this summer, and he’s also performing today in two different events at state speech contest. This Algona native is also an outstanding musician, and he performed with the Countryside Community Playhouse last summer. Philip will be a college man next year, and we wish him all the best.
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there’s state large group speech contest over in Spencer today. The Bears all perform in the afternoon, with all our entries scheduled between 1:00 and 3:30pm.
Today there’s also an alumni volleyball tournament at Garrigan. Tomorrow intramural basketball continues. Then Monday night the freshman boys play at Algona High.
Next Tuesday all our accelerated math students will take the AMC-12, a national math test with some of the toughest questions around. That night the boys basketball team plays at Eagle Grove.
We’ll have an all-school mass on Wednesday. Then Thursday girls basketball playoffs start. The Bears begin regional play by hosting Laurens—Marathon.
