The Bear Facts

May 4, 2002

Good morning! I'm Michael Loebach!

I'm Chris Kohlhaas!

And I'm Bridget Buscherfeld! You're listening to the "Bear Facts", the weekly news program from Bishop Garrigan High School.

Last Monday the BGHS quiz bowl team competed in the on-line Thinking Cap quiz bowl, an internet-based competition with 100 questions from all areas of knowledge. Garrigan had both varsity and JV entries in the contest, and both teams did extremely well. The varsity team finished answered 90% of the questions correctly, for a total score of 988 points. Rebecca McGuire was the varsity captain, and other players included Drew Miller, Christoph Gebele, Chris Kohlhaas, Adam Rahm, and Mandy Rahm.

The JV team also had an excellent day. They had the same questions as the varsity, and they managed to answer 82% right, for a total score of 964. John Kohlhaas led the JV freshmen and sophomores, and his teammates included Amber Golwitzer, Josh Broesder, Jesse Bode, Anthony McGuire, and Matt Courtney. Congratulations to all of them!

The quiz bowl team is now looking forward to the end of the month, when nine of them will be traveling to the National Academic Championships in New Orleans. The team will leave on Wednesday, May 29, and over the next three days they'll play against some of the top teams from all over the country. After the tournament they'll be spending a day relaxing on the Gulf Coast, and on their way home they've got tickets to see Garrigan graduate and former quiz bowl player Brad Nelson playing a professional baseball game.

Bob Brandenburg will be captain of the Golden Bear team at nationals. Also making the trip are seniors Rebecca McGuire, Mandy Rahm, Chris Kohlhaas; juniors David Murphy and Steven Kellner; sophomores John Kohlhaas and Rachel McGuire; and freshman Matt Courtney. Coach David Burrow, math teacher Daryl Kohlhaas, and former quiz bowl player Angie Kohlhaas will be escorting the team to New Orleans.

One of the more interesting courses at Garrigan is Mrs. Vaske's business law class. They've taken field trips to the courthouse and actually sat in on an important trial. This past week they had another fun activity, as the whole class took on roles for a mock trial. The premise of this imaginary lawsuit was that Ben Geelan had misled Andy Kardoes into buying a car, and Andy sued Ben because the car was a lemon. Stephanie Hilbert acted as the attorney for the plaintiff, and Ben Long was the defense lawyer. Other class members were witnesses and jury members, and Deacon Bob Larsen served as an honorary judge. In the end Andy won the mock trial, and the whole class learned a lot about the legal system in the process.

Last Thursday we had Grandparents' Day at Garrigan. This event has grown from just a handful of people stopping in for lunch to one of the biggest events the school hosts each year. Thanks to the beautiful weather, nearly 270 grandparents visited the school this year. They enjoyed a special lunch with their grandchildren, together with performances by the band, choir, and speech team. Grandparents are some of our school's biggest supporters, and we're certainly glad for all they do for us.

We held elections this week for the 2002 - 2003 student council. When the votes were counted on Tuesday, there was a tie for student council president. We had a run-off on Wednesday, and in the end Andrea Schiltz and Nicole Elbert defeated Zac Lickteig and Alex Vaske by just 8 votes. They will be next year's co-presidents. Zac and Alex were elcted co-presidents of the Class on 2003. Next year's junior class co-presidents will be Scott Stence and Molly Black, while the sophomore class will be led by Derek Tindall and Matt Vitzthum.

This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Brianna Miller, Heather Boever, and Amanda Bormann. Here to tell you about them is Catherine Hellman.

Brianna Miller's biggest activity is publications. She is also active in the Christian Leadership in Action group, and last winter she was out for intramurals. When she's not in school, Brianna enjoys babysitting to earn some extra cash.

Heather Boever comes to Garrigan from the Bancroft area. Over the years she has been involved in track, softball, and choir. When she's not busy studying, she enjoys rollerblading and music.

Amanda Bormann is a St. Joe native who helps out at home on the farm. She is president of her 4-H club, and she enjoys playing the piano at church and babysitting. All our featured seniors will be off to college next fall, and we wish Brianna, Heather, and Amanda the very best of luck!

Thanks, Cathy! On our Golden Bear calendar, today the band and choir are competing in the state large-group music competition at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. Monday the golf teams play in their conference meets-with the girls at Algona and the boys at St. Ed's.

Tuesday there's girls district golf. Then on Tuesday night the girls track team runs at district, while the boys team has a meet in Forest City. Then on Wednesday softball practice starts, and seniors take their exams.

Thursday is the final day for seniors. They have baccalaureate on Thursday night. The girls CYO golf meet will be at Kuemper on Thursday, and there's a boys track meet that night at Lake Mills.

Next Friday junior Jeff Hellman will be competing in the Great Plains regional mathematics competition in Kansas City. Finally on Saturday there's boys golf sectionals and boys district track at Manson.

That's the "Bear Facts" for this week. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in next week when we'll have a special show saluting the Class of 2002 here at Bishop Garrigan High School.
