And I'm Cassie Recker! Your listening to the "Bear Facts," the radio show where every week we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Most of the news this week centers around music. Today is Band Day, and Garrigan's Solid Gold Marching Band should be very competitive in the 1-A division for both the parade and field competitions. Last year's music trip to New York was the inspiration for this fall's competition show. The program is entitled "On Broadway". It opens with "The Impossible Dream", which they follow up with the theme from Phantom of the Opera. The production number is "Ol' Man River", and the percussion section and flag line are featured in "On Broadway". The show closes with "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from The Lion King.
Dennis Freking is the band director, and Colleen Schiltz arranged the flag line. John Kohlhaas is field commander for this year's marching band. Other seniors in band include Amanda Elbert, Amber Golwitzer, Brooke Myers, Tyler Rolling, Scott Stence. Juniors are Amanda Thompson, Renee Taphorn, Jacob Richter, Jill Patterson, Samantha Kirsch, Sam Dittrich, and Matt Courtney. There's a huge group of sophomores out for band. Among them are Samantha Arndorfer, Ashley Waller, Alison Brandenburg, Jennifer Vaske, Nancy Syharath, Jessica Cink, and Jacob Detrick.
Other sophomores in band include Jesse and Jude Studer, Bridget Doughan, Adam Elbert, Kelly Schmidt, Monica Schiltz, Sadie Foertsch, Brandon Rowley, Kandice Roethler, Gavin Freking, Amanda Golwitzer, Jacob Hellman, Tim Lind, Andrew Missal, and Spencer Rahm. Rounding out the band are the freshmen: Tony Rouse, Brittany Pfeffer, Alicia Miller, A.J. Lane, Maria Kohlhaas, JoAnn Kirsch, Elizabeth Erdman, Amanda Cruise, Rachel Byrkeland, Garrison Brosnan, and Anna Bormann. The flag line includes danz squad members Ashley Shaw, Melissa Hilbert, Lizzie Mayer, and Michaela Pease. The band performs in the parade at 1:00 this afternoon, and they'll also compete in the field competition at 6:45 tonight at Algona High School. Good luck to the Solid Gold Marching Band.
This is also a big week for the BGHS varsity and a cappella choirs. Next Wednesday they'll be off to Carrol Kuemper for the 21st Annual Sioux City Diocese Catholic Choral Festival. The choir has been rehearsing songs like "Festival Sanctus", "Shout Glory", "America the Beautiful", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", and "Kyrie". Then there's what choir member Eric Cassmann "the two songs from hell"-"Every Time I Feel the Spirit" and "Things that Never Die". Garrigan will join choirs from all over northwest Iowa for a day of rehearsals and an evening concert. The public is invited to go down to Carroll Wednesday night to see the show. Admission is just $2 for adults and $1 for students.
While the choir is gone for Catholic Choral Day, the student council will do their semi-annual Adopt-a-Highway project. Twice each year Garrigan student council members pick up trash on the stretch of highway 18 either side of Sexton. This year's adopt-a-highway crew includes seniors Molly Black, Michaela Mescher, and Aaron O'Kane; juniors Derek Tindall, Matt Vitzthum, Matt Courtney, and Nicole Reding; sophomores Spenser Rahm and Alison Brandenburg; and freshmen Dustin Tindall, Alex Elbert, and Chris Loebach. Others on student council include presidents John Kohlhaas and Eric Cassmann, as well as Josh Broesder, Gavin Freking, Kayla Reding, and Chris Cassmann. Best wishes for Adopt-a-Highway to the student council.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Michaela Mescher. Here to tell you about her is Nettie McGuire.
Michaela Mescher lives near Cylinder and comes all the way to Algona to go to Garrigan. She's co-president of the Class of 2004 and a three-year student council member. Michaela is active in volleyball, basketball, and golf. She's also in Christian Leadership, and you might have heard her announcing here on the "Bear Facts". Michaela plans to attend the University of Iowa next fall, and we wish her all the best.
On our Golden Bear calendar, today is Band Day. Be sure to watch the parade at 1pm and then head to Algona High School for the field competition. Garrigan will perform at 6:45 tonight.
All next week we'll continue the Iowa Tests of Educational Development. Monday night there's JV football at Ft. Dodge St. Edmond, while the volleyball team hosts Eagle Grove.
Tuesday the cross-country team runs at Eagle Grove. Wednesday is Catholic Choral Day, and the student council will do Adopt-a-Highway in Sexton. Then on Thursday the volleyball team plays at Humboldt.
Next Friday the district-leading Golden Bear football team will take on Lake Mills. The baseball and softball teams will sponsor a chili supper at the game. Then next Saturday is state marching band contest in Ft. Dodge.
Finally this week we'd like to share our sympathy with Sr. Herman from Seton, who lost her brother this past week. We want Sister to know our thoughts and prayers are with her.
