Facts", the radio show where each week we keep you updated on all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
It's not often you get two of the same trophy for the same thing-at the same time, but that's exactly what happened to the Golden Bear quiz bowl team last weekend. They brought home two different second place trophies from the Boone Invitational Tournament. Compared to other quiz bowls, the Boone tournament is kind of weird. Every team makes the play-offs, but they are placed in one of two divisions based on their record during the day. Garrigan had teams in each division, and as it turned out the Golden Bears both of the second place prizes. The top team included John Kohlhaas, Amber Golwitzer, Steven Kellner, and David Murphy. They had a perfect 4 - 0 record after the preliminary rounds, with victories over Eagle Grove, Gilbert, Sac City, and Southeast Polk. They had the #3 seed for play-offs, and they made it all the way to the championship game before falling to Ankeny.
The surprise of the tournament was Garrigan's second team, which included Nick Dahlhauser, Mike Blocker, Scott Stence, Tyler Rolling, and Eric Cassmann. Even though they were 0 - 4 in the preliminary rounds, they won when it counted. They won a tie-breaker over Sac City and then defeated Southeast Polk, Sac City, and Boone, before falling to Eagle Grove in the final round. The final Garrigan team fell in the quarter-finals and ended up in seventh place out of sixteen teams in the green division. They victories included a 120 - 0 rout of Forest City and a big win over Southeast Webster. The team was made up of Jacob Richter, Jacob Hellman, Seth Rogers, Andrew Missal, and Noah Devine.
Tonight about half of Garrigan's students will be trying to "catch a falling star" as they celebrate Prom Night, 2003. The junior class has been working hard all week to transform the gym into a grand ballroom, and everyone is expecting to have a lovely time tonight. The grand march will be at 8pm, and after the dance is over, everyone will be up all night at the traditional after-prom party. Everyone who goes to after-prom wins things, and this year's prizes include a Playstation 2, several TVs, a DVD player, and savings bonds. We know everyone will have a great time at Prom, 2003.
Once prom is over, it's time to transform the gym yet again, as we get ready for the fourteenth Garrigan Gala. This year's theme is "Gala Magic". The fun will begin Friday night with a preview party for invited guests. Gala itself starts at 5:30 next Saturday evening. In addition to a tasty and elegant dinner, guests will bid on live and silent auction items and participate in a number of raffles and prize drawings held throughout the evening. Each year Gala brings in close to $200,000 to help support the Catholic schools in Algona. We hope the 2003 event will be another great success.
Next Wednesday nine Garrigan students will be showing off their talent at the North Central Conference Art Show in Eagle Grove. Seniors Rosalind Kirsch and Justin Fickbohm will be joines by juniors Cassie Recker and Kris Sutter, sophomores Samantha Kirsch, Rose Mayer, and Brianne Donahe, and freshmen April Wolf and Lizze Mayer. Congratulations to these students and to art teacher Steve Brosnan.
Monday four BGHS students will be in Cedar Falls to perform at the All-State speech festival. Junior Amber Golwitzer will present a literary program giving a humorous twist on political correctness, and senior Autumn Thompson will give a public address on character. Senior Keshar Nadkarni will read a humorous poem based loosely on the story of Little Red Riding Hood, and junior Eric Cassmann will present an acting scene by Bob Newhart that takes the idea of defusing a bomb and makes it funny. Congratulations, speech honorees!
Last weekend we held the championship game in our intramural basketball tournament. There were no surprises when the top-seeded team of Miles Berte, Kris Sutter, Colby Reding, Mason Elbert, Drew Miller, Josh Broesder, John Kohlhaas, and Jesse Bode cruised to victory. Colby described the final score of 45 - 29 as "a total blowout", and Mason said his team "completely dominated from the start of the season to the end". The team finished intramurals with a perfect 8 - 0 record.
Also on Sunday we announced the members of the 2003 All-Intramural Basketball Team. Honorable mentions included Jason Lallier, Jim Garman, Kim Frideres, Jon Hanig, and Eric Goodman. Zac Lickteig, Tyler Rahm, Colby Reding, Tony Hilbert, and Mason Elbert earned second team selections, while Drew Miller, Adam Gisch, Alex Vaske, John Kohlhaas, and Andrew Thilges all were named first team, all-intramural. Matt Vitzthum was the all-intramural referee for 2003.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Sylvia Weber and Tyler Rahm. Here to tell you about them is
Amanda Elbert.
Sylvia Weber is active in many activities. She runs distance races in track, and she was also on the Golden Bear cross country team last fall. In the winter she was one of the BGHS basketball cheerleaders. She's also a band member, and she used to be in choir. Next year she'll be attending Iowa State, and we wish her all the best.
You might see Tyler Rahm working if you stop in at Johnny's in Wesley. Tyler's biggest activity is intramural basketball, where his team made it to the championship game last weekend. He also used to be in baseball. Tyler will be off to college in the fall. Good luck to both Sylvia and Tyler.
Thanks, Amanda! On our Golden Bear calendar, today there's the alumni basketball tournament at the Algona YMCA. Then tonight is Prom Night, 2003.
Tomorrow daylight savings time begins. The danz squad will present their spring show at 6:30 tomorrow night at the YMCA. Then on Monday there's All-State speech in Cedar Falls.
Tuesday the girls track team runs at Clear Lake and the danz squad will hold their awards banquet. Wednesday there's the conference art show in Eagle Grove, and then Thursday there's boys track at Lake Mills.
Friday is the Gala preview party. Saturday is state solo and small ensemble music contest at Britt. Then that night it's time for some magic with the annual Gala fundraiser.
Finally this week we'd like to extend our condolences to Seton teacher and Garrigan coach Dave Wieland on the loss of his mother. We'll be keeping all the Wieland family in our thoughts and prayers.
