And I’m Erin Quinlin! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
The biggest event on the calendar today is Algona Band Day, the sixty-fifth year for the big community event. The Garrigan middle school band will lead off the parade this afternoon, so be sure to be downtown right at 1pm to see them. The high school band goes on deck at 1:20, and you can see them march in the parade between 1:45 and 2pm.
The 1-A bands open the field competition at night. Garrigan will be the second band competing, and they take the field at 5:45 this evening. This year’s marching show is called “More Cowbell”, and it features the songs “Gimme Some Lovin’”, “Low Rider”, “Don’t Fear the Reaper”, and “Rock ‘n’ Roll All Night”. Good luck at band day to director Ken Ferjak and the Solid Gold Marching Band!
Today is also the first competition of the year for Golden Bear quiz bowl, and the team is looking to continue its perennial success this year. Because of band day there’s just a small group heading down to Centennial High School in Ankeny. Five Golden Bears will be competing: national veterans Devin Degen and Taylor Illg, plus Joseph Espinosa, Levi Capesius, and Ben Fogarty. Good luck to Coach David Burrow and the quiz bowl team!
Tomorrow will be a big day for most of our sophomores. They’ll be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. It’s been more than a year since Bishop Nickless has been in Algona to confirm young people, but he’ll be at St. Cecelia’s tomorrow as the sophomores become full members of the church. Congratulations to all our
confirmands!
This year’s Bishop Garrigan calendar drive was the most successful ever. We sold a total of 2,647 calendars, which brought in more than $79,000. After prizes, that will add more than $40,000 to our school transportation budget. Thanks to the successful sales, we hope to update a diesel bus and a suburban which will be used for school activities this coming year.
Again this year the top calendar seller was Levi Capesius, who turned in 108 calendar sales. Sabrina Book was second with 87 calendars, and Brad Capesius was third with 82. Other top ten sellers include Madison Meister, Ben Degen, Tommy Kollasch, Gianna Byrkeland, Will Fox, Kellen Murphy, and Nick Bronk. Thanks to everyone who made this year’s calendar drive a big success!
The Golden Bear football team has been enjoying a great season so far this year. After losing their opener to Ft. Dodge St. Edmond, a top-ten rated team in a higher class, the Bears have been doing great. Their only other loss was against Ackley Geneva Wellsburg Steamboat Rock, another top ten team. The game was scoreless until there was just 12 seconds left on the clock, and AGWSR ended up winning just 6 – 0, by far their closest game of the season.
The cross-country team has also been strong this year. The Algona Invitational this past week was dominated by larger schools, but the Bears still brought home four medals. Erin Quinlin, Zach Kollasch, Tony Kollasch, and Nick Bronk were all medalists, while Taylor Illg ran a personal record. The Bears run at Eagle Grove next Tuesday. We’ll update you on volleyball and swimming on next week’s show.
CCCCC: Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Brayton Loss. Here to tell you about him is Jake Hamilton.
If you check out the Garrigan website this fall, you’ll probably see some of Brayton Loss’ work. He’s created dozens of pages about various activities around school. Brayton was a key part of the Bear’s big victory over Britt West Hancock last week. He’s also a basketball starter, and he’s been to state in track. Brayton would like to play football in college, and we wish him all the best in the future.

Wednesday is Go the Distance Day, the day each fall when we celebrate fitness. We’ll also have a school mass on Wednesday morning. Then next Thursday the volleyball team hosts St. Edmond.
The varsity football team plays at Mason City Newman on Friday night. Then next Saturday there’s the state marching band competition in Ft. Dodge.
