The Bear Facts
FEBRUARY 6, 1999
Good morning! I'm Dennis Gisch!
And I'm Brandon Donahe! Welcome to another episode of the "Bear Facts," the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Plans are again underway for the year's biggest social and fundraising event, the annual Garrigan Gala. Gala '99 is just two months off. It will take place one week after Easter, on Saturday, April 10. This year's Gala theme is "A Tropical Evening in Paradise". Development workers Diane Elbert, Mary Ann Meister, and Barb Grandgenett have been busy for months planning the evening and organizing gift-gathering events in preparation for Gala. Now they're into the home stretch, and we wish them well as they make all the final plans.
Today Garrigan's speech team will be competing in the state large group contest at Spencer. Garrigan has four events entered at state contest. Our first entry will begin around 11:30 this morning. It's the acting ensemble "If Men Played Cards as Women Do". Shortly after that Garrigan's other ensemble, "Eagles Scream, Too," will perform. Promptly at 1pm the varsity one-act, "What Are We Going to Do with Mama," will take the stage, followed at 3:30 by the freshman one-act "Three on a Bench". The public is welcome to watch any of the events, and we encourage everyone to head over to Spencer to support the Golden Bear speech team.
Garrigan senior Melissa McGuire remains in rehabilitation in Minneapolis, still recovering from her accident last fall. There are two upcoming events scheduled to help Melissa and her family. Two weeks from today, on Saturday, February 20, there will be a community benefit for both Melissa and for Diane Kohlhaas. Then on March 13, a group of seniors is holding a dance at the VFW Hall to help out Melissa. Social hour will start at 7pm, and the dance beins at 8:00. Admission is $3, and all the proceeds will go to speed Melissa's rehabilitation. We all think of Melissa everyday, and we're looking forward to seeing her back home.
Last weekend we had the much-hyped intramural match-up between the teams that are officially called "Team C" and "Team E". It was no surprise that this ended up being by far the closest game of the season. The lead changed back and forth during the game, and it ended up being just a three-point victory. The winners were Jay Servantez's Screaming Stus, with Joe Lucas and the Fire Ants close behind.
We've already introduced you to most of the intramural teams, but there's two teams left that we haven't met yet. David Monson is the captain of the team we can only refer to as "D". His teammates are fellow sophomores John Steier, Matt Elbert, Gavin Illg, Justin Froehlich, Nick Even, Jake Rahm, and Cody Youngwirth. The final team is headed up by co-captains Duane McGregor and Jake Kohlhaas. Their fellow players include juniors Dean Boever, Pat Thilges, Josh Harp, and Trent Youngwirth; as well as sophomores Andrew Hellman, Dan Bormann, Chris Missal, and Greg Besch. Good luck to them in the rest of the season.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Joe Lucas and Matt Kunkel.
Joe Lucas is probably proudest to be the captain of the Fire Ants intramural basketball team. Joe also enjoys baseball, and away from school you may have seen him working at Fareway. Joe is already a college student; he's taking a math class at Iowa Lakes Community College, as he gets ready to attend Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids next year. Good luck, Joe!
Matt Kunkel has been one of the secret weapons for the Golden Bear varsity boys this winter. He's come out of nowhere to be one of the leading scorers on the team. Matt enjoys all sports, but his favorite is probably golf. He'll be off to college next year, and we wish him all the best.
On this week's Golden Bear calendar, there's state speech today at Spencer High School. The Bears' first event will start around 11:30.
Tomorrow intramurals continue. Then on Monday the freshman boys' basketball team will travel to Humboldt.
Tuesday there's JV and varsity basketball, as the Bears travel to Clear Lake. Then on Wednesday the freshman hoopsters play North Kossuth at Swea City.
Next Thursday we'll have a jeans day, with the proceeds going to help Diane Kohlhaas. At 5:30 that night the speech department will present their annual Evening of Theatre, which was postponed due to bad weather last week.
Next Friday we'll have another four-game match-up at Garrigan, as the Bears host Iowa Falls. Be sure to come see the Cadets' Nick Collison dunk that ball.
At the games on Friday the danz squad will be holding a cavatini dinner. The money will help them to go to nationals this spring in San Diego.
Finally next Saturday the quiz bowl team will be in action again. This time they're competing at Maurice/Orange City-Floyd Valley.
That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to set your dial here again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
