And I'm Cathy Hellman! You're listening to the "Bear Facts", the radio show where every week we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Last Saturday the Bishop Garrigan Solid Gold Marching Band competed in the annual Algona Band Day. Garrigan finished in tenth place overall, beating schools like Waterloo East, Lake Mills, and Eagle Grove. The Bears received good marks for the general effect and showmanship of their presentation, and the auxiliary flag unit earned especially high marks. The flag corps and the instrumentalists are in competition again today. They're down in Fort Dodge this morning for the state marching band competition. Good luck to the band as they compete at state!
Last night the Golden Bear football team had one of their biggest games of the season, as they faced Southern Cal. Both the Bears and the Mustangs are among the top-ranked teams in the state, and both teams have dominated every other team in the district. Since the Bears beat Laurens-Marathon, the third place team in the district, earlier in the season, it's most likely that both Garrigan and Southern Cal will be advancing to play-offs, and most likely they'll face each other again on the road to state.
The members of the Golden Bear cross-country team have changed a bit from the beginning of the season, and overall the team is looking better and better. One of the Bears' top new runners is Christoph Gebele, an exchange student from Germany who is living with the family of cross-country coach Daryl Kohlhaas. His times have been close to the Bears' leading runners, Jeff Hellman and Matt Studer. Other new runners include Scott Stence and Josh Broesder. Next Tuesday the Bears will be running in the North Central Conference meet at Goldfield, and they're looking forward to taking home some medals. Good luck to the cross-country team!
The Golden Bear volleyball team has a big week coming up. It starts off tomorrow when the girls travel to LeMars Gehlen for the annual CYO volleyball tournament. Then on Monday they have a big match at Algona High. Wednesday they'll be home for the last time this season, as the girls host Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. The Bears have been playing hard all season, and they've compiled a winning record against some very tough competition. We encourage everyone to come out and see the girls at both these local games next week. Good luck to the volleyball Bears at CYO and all through the rest of the season!
There's one other team that will be competing next week. One week from today Garrigan will be hosting our eleventh annual quiz bowl tournament. Again this year the Garrigan tournament is expected to be the largest in Iowa, with sixty-three teams coming from as far away as Boone and LeMars. Garrigan will be well represented in the tournament, with twenty-two students competing. We'll fill you in on all the details of quiz bowl on next week's show.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Monica Studer and Nolan Thilges. Here to fill you in on them is Mike McAlpine.
Monica Studer comes to Garrigan from the Wesley area. She is probably best known for accomplishments in danz squad, where she's performed at state every year in high school. Monica is a cheerleading captain and a student council representative, and she's also lettered in cross-country. She was even part of the school's first girls' intramural basketball team in years. Away from Garrigan you might see her working at the Good Samaritan Center or at Hillside Golf Course. Monica plans to attend Mt. Marty College next fall, and we wish her all the best.
Nolan Thilges is a St. Joe Native who is among the honor students at Garrigan. His biggest activity over the years has been golf, but he also was class president as a freshman, and he was a member of Model UN. Nolan also works at the Algona Good Samaritan Center. He plans to major in radiolography at college, and we wish him all the best.
Thanks, Mike! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, the Solid Gold Marching Band is in Ft. Dodge this morning for the state marching band competition. We invite everyone to go down to Dodger Stadium to hear them.
Tomorrow there's CYO volleyball in LeMars. Monday ITEDs continue in our math classes. There's JV football that night, with the Bears hosting Estherville. Also on Monday the volleyball team plays at Algona High.
Tuesday is the conference cross-country meet at Goldfield. Then Wednesday eight student council members will travel to Webster City for the North Central Conference Leadership Summit.
Wednesday night the volleyball team hosts St. Ed's for their last home game of the season. We'll be honoring the veteran players on Senior Night. Thursday there's no school at Garrigan, and Seton will dismiss at 12:45pm.
Friday ITEDs end, and that night the football team will be hosting Southeast Webster. Then next Satuday it's time for the big BGHS quiz bowl tournament.
