And I’m John Richter! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”. Happy Easter from everyone here at Bishop Garrigan High School!
We’re taking a break from school activities this weekend as we celebrate the Holy Triduum. The past week and the coming week were busy, though, so there’s lots of news to update you on. First there’s intramural basketball. Last Sunday, while the NCAA had their playoffs, we held our own Final Four here at Garrigan. While all four teams that made the intramural playoffs were good, there wasn’t much question about the order of finish. All of the playoff games were lopsided. In a team that called themselves “Hurricane Britt” won the 2012 intramural championship. Congratulations to Alex Boisjolie, Luke Eischen, Daniel Gelhaus, Terrenze Franklin, Andrew Eden, and Sarah McCall won the 2012 intramural championship.
Just before the championship game the 2012 All-Intramural Team was announced. Selection is determined partly by performance during the season and partly by an online poll on the school website. Students in the web page class tallied the votes this year. First, from among the six varsity basketball players who refereed games this year, the All-Intramural referee selected was Eli Marlow.
The honorable mentions for the All-Intramural Team were Amelia Golwitzer, Craig Kohlhaas, Sam Evers, Bethany Capesius, and Bobby Plathe. The second team included Elliot Boisjolie, Jonathan Berte, Abbey Reding, Charlie Thilges, and Jake Kollasch. Finally, the honor of First Team, All-Intramural, went to Daniel Gelhaus, Corey Weydert, Alex Boisjolie, Lucas Eischen, and Captain Andrew McGuire. Congratulations All-Intramural honorees!
Next week the North Central Conference Art Show will be held over in Clear Lake. This year nine BGHS students were selected to represent the school with their artwork. Among those exhibiting their projects this year are Aisha Miller, Bobby Plathe, Emma Plathe, Rebecca Richter, Jeanne McCall, MaKayla Foertsch, Mariah McCall, Lizzy Hohmeister, and McKenna McGuire. Congratulations to instructor Steve Brosnan and all the art honorees!
Some people have called the perennially successful Golden Bear golf teams a dynasty, and Coach Dean Capesius is hoping to continue that success in 2012. With the beautiful weather, the Bears have been able to get a lot of practice in, and they’ll be playing in their first meets this coming week. The Garrigan boys are looking to return to state this year. At the core of the team are seniors Brandon Schiltz, Billy Schiltz, Eli Marlow, and Joe Farrell; plus juniors Victor Berte and B.J. Plathe. Rounding out the team are sophomores Michael Berke, Connor Garman, Nathan Krieps, and Chris Loss; and freshmen Jess Marlow, Taylor Illg, and Jacob Thul.
The Golden Bear girls are the defending state champions, and they’re hoping 2012 will be another good year. This year’s team features seniors Sheridan Berte and McKenna McGuire; juniors Rebecca Richter, Haley Froehlich, and MaKayla Foertsch; sophomores Alexa Capesius and Mallory Schiltz; and freshman Brittany Arndorfer. Good luck all spring to the Golden Bear golfers!
Last Sunday many Garrigan students donned hair nets and headed over to the KC Hall. They were helping out with the Parish Families Against Hunger project. Students from Garrigan’s Christian Leadership in Action group worked together with adults from all the area Catholic parishes. They packed thousands of meals that will help out needy families around the world.
Each year students at Seton Grade School take part in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education or DARE program. As part of the program, Garrigan seniors act as role models for the little kids. This year’s DARE role models are Daniel Gelhaus, Mallory Bormann, Grant Reding, Alex Boisjolie, Addison Miller, Abbey Reding, Bethany Capesius, Andrea Altman, Jennifer Broesder, and Rachel Berte. A big salute to all the DARE role models!
Gala 2012 is just around the corner. This coming week the gym will be transformed to a desert oasis, and Saturday more than 300 guests will be on hand to enjoy Jewels of the Nile, this year’s Gala theme. Gala is by far the biggest fundraiser each year for the Bishop Garrigan Schools, bringing in more than $200,000 in recent years. We’ll tell you more about this year’s big event on next week’s show.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Jeanne McCall. Here to tell you about her is Alex Boisjolie.
Jeanne McCall will be making her second straight trip to the North Central Conference Art Show this past year. Last year she won a special award for the best 3-D work in the conference, and some of her artwork will be featured among the decorations for next week’s Gala. Jeanne has also been active in choir. When she’s not on the floor at Garrigan, Jeanne likes spending time with her friends. She’ll be off to college in the fall, and we wish her all the best.
Thanks, Alex! On our Golden Bear calendar, with Easter Sunday tomorrow, there are no school activities at Garrigan this weekend. Monday things start up with tryouts for next year’s danz squad.
Classes begin again on Tuesday. That night there’s girls track at Algona High, boys track at Iowa Falls, boys golf at Webster City, and girls golf at home vs. Webster City and St. Edmond.
The North Central Conference Art Show is Wednesday in Clear Lake. Thursday there’s boys track at Lake Mills. Then Friday night there’s the Gala preview party.
Also on Friday the girls track team hosts the BGHS Relays at Algona. There’s boys track at Estherville, and the golf teams face Clear Lake—with the boys at home and the girls away.
Finally next Saturday the band and choir students compete in the state solo and ensemble contest. That night the doors open for Gala 2012.
