Sixteen Garrigan girls are in Des Moines today for the annual state drill team competition. The Golden Bear danz squad has a tradition of doing very well at state, and they're looking forward to taking home some trophies again this year. Veteran seniors on this year's danz squad include Lindsey Eischen, Sarah Schmitt, Ananda Wolf, Rachel Foth, Kim Frideres, and Nikki Loebig. Joining them are juniors Maria Erpelding and Nicole Krieps; sophomore Ashley Shaw; and freshmen Jessica Cink, April Wolf, Jennifer Vaske, and Monica Schiltz. This year's alternates are freshmen Lizzie Mayer, Melissa Hilbert, and Michaela Pease. Good luck at state to Coach Colleen Conway-Schiltz and the danz squad.
The Golden Bear quiz bowl team is also in action this morning-competing in the Spirit Lake Invitational. Garrigan's varsity team includes captain John Kohlhaas, together with Nick Dahlhauser, Amber Golwitzer, Autumn Thompson, Steven Kellner, and Tyler Rolling. There is also a JV entry from BGHS at today's tournament. Members of that team include captain Mike Blocker, as well as Amanda Golwitzer, John Stetzel, Jacob Hellman, Adam Cink, and Seth Rogers. Good luck to Coach David Burrow and the quiz bowl team.
This is actually the second time this week the quiz bowl team has competed. Wednesday they took part in the computer-based Knowledge Master Open. Garrigan's varsity team competed in the high school division, while a group of freshmen competed in the middle school contest. The varsity answered 168 out of 200 questions correctly, for a score of 1087 points. That was above the state average and placed them 17th out of 34 teams in Iowa. Nationwide they had the 578th best score. The freshmen got 161 questions right, with a total score of 1061. Congratulations to them!
Next weekend the Garrigan music, drama, and fine arts departments will present their ninth old English madrigal celebration. There will be two madrigal events: a brunch at 11:30am and a dinner at 6:30pm. The brunch menu includes wassail cups, fried bread, fresh fruit with sauce, chicken pie, gingerbread with cream, and cherry torte. At dinner, guests will enjoy wassail and bread, together with asparagus soup, lettuce salad, roast pork loin with mushrooms, parsley potatoes, vegetable medley, flaming Christmas pudding, strawberry torte, and apple pie.
According to the music department, "all the regal pageantry and ceremonial pomp of merry old England will be splendidly brought to life in the Great Friedmann Hall at Bishop Garrigan High School". Brunch tickets are available for $12 for adults or $7 for students, while dinner tickets cost $16 for adults and $9 for students. Seating is limited, so we encourage everyone to make your reservations today. You can call Marty Patterson or Lisa Cassmann for reservations.
Even if you can't make it to madrigal, you can still share in the experience. Several of the musicians who will be entertaining at madrigal will also be sharing their talent in the community this coming week. Two groups of madrigal singers and a clarinet ensemble will be performing at Northwest Federal Savings Bank next Tuesday, December 10. Stop in and enjoy some holiday selections from Garrigan's musicians.
The music department is continuing to raise money for their trip to New York City next spring. Among their other fundraisers, they are collecting pop cans. You can bring your cans to any school event at Garrigan or drop them off during the school day. We'll take them to the recycling center, and the deposits will help defray expenses for band and choir students to travel to the Big Apple.

Sarah Schmitt is a Whittemore native who is one of the more active members of the Class of 2003. She is down in Des Moines today with the danz squad, competing in the state drill team competition. Sarah also excels in speech and drama, and she helped to organize a new youth group in Whittemore. You may have heard her announcing here on the "Bear Facts". Sarah will be off to college next year, and we wish her all the best.
Drew Miller was one of the quiz bowl players who competed in the Knowledge Master Open last week. You probably know him better as a stand-out on the Golden Bear football team. Drew is also active in track, and he enjoys intramural basketball. He will also be off to college in the fall. Good luck to both Drew and Sarah!
Thanks, Rosie! On our Golden Bear calendar there's the state danz squad competition today at Veterans' Auditorium in Des Moines. The quiz bowl team is competing in Spirit Lake, and this afternoon at 2:00 the Golden Bear varsity basketball teams play at Garner.
Tomorrow is the Second Sunday of Advent. Monday we'll have a K-12 mass at Garrigan for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Tuesday night the basketball bears host Webster City. The National Honor Society will be serving a chili supper at the games.
Wednesday the freshman basketball teams play at Estherville. Thursday freshman confirmation candidates will have a Night of Reflection at the KC Hall. Then on Friday there's more basketball, as the Bears travel to Clarion.
