And I'm Eric Cassmann! You're listening to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio program from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Today twenty-seven Garrigan students are in Spencer for the Iowa High School Speech Association state large-group speech contest. Garrigan has eight entries at state, and even though practices have been kind of thin because of all the snow days and late starts the past couple of weeks, we're hoping for a good showing at state. Three of the entries are group improvisations. There's a group of seniors including the three of us announcing today, as well as Scott Stence. Another improv group features sophomores Ashley Waller, Jacob Hellman, Seth Rogers, Tim Lind, and Brandon Rowley. The third group includes freshmen Garry Brosnan, Chris Loebach, Alicia Miller, and Cindy Reding.
Garrigan also has three ensemble acting selections going to state. My fellow announcers John and Eric star in "My Name is Leslie", together with Brooke Myers and Amber Golwitzer. "Men Are from Milwaukee; Women Are from Phoenix" features Jesse Bode and Katelyn Besch. The third ensemble is "Act 3, Scene 5", with me--Josh Broesder--Ashley Waller, Renee Taphorn, Allison Even, and Amanda Thompson.
The single largest event the Bears are taking to state is a reader's theatre called "All's Well that Ends Wrong". The cast includes Brandon Rowley, together with Amber Golwitzer, Sadie Foertsch, Amanda Golwitzer, Laura Kellner, and Nancy Syharath. The final Garrigan event is a group mime-a surprisingly silent "speech". The mime features Liz Mayer, Andrea Arndorfer, Kayla Reding, and Theresa Reising. Good luck to all the Garrigan entries at state.
Last Saturday the Golden Bear boys basketball team set a new school record. Their win over Garner-Hayfield was the fifteenth consecutive victory. They kept on raising that number this past week. The old record of 14 consecutive wins goes all the way back to the late 1960s, when Steve McCall was the Bears' head coach. Coach McCall is back on the coaching staff now, as a sort of senior advisor among the head coaches. The boys have all but clinched a North Central Conference championship, and their goal now is to have an undefeated season. Good luck in the rest of their regular season games to the basketball team.
In spite of a large number of injuries the girls basketball team has also been doing well lately. This past week they got big victories over Clarion-Goldfield and Hampton-Dumont. A large part of the girls success has come from senior leaders like Lindsay Becker, Nettie McGuire, and Michaela Mescher. Sophomores like Alison Brandenburg and Amanda Steier have also been stepping up-especially after some of the older players were benched with injuries. Good luck to the girls in the rest of their season.
There's a big group of cheerleaders supporting the basketball teams this year. Squad 1 includes Jill Patterson, Amanda Fox, Brooke Myers, Cassie Recker, Katelyn Besch, and Nancy Syharath. Squad 2 features Sadie Foertsch, Kandice Roethler, Hope Grein, Anna Bormann, Laura O'Kane, and Emily Reising. There are also four senior boys out for cheerleading this year: Nick Golwitzer, Kris Sutter, David Rasmussen, and Jesse Bode.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Brooke Myers and Lindsay Becker. Brooke Myers has practiced baton or ten years. At school she is active in cheerleading, speech, drama, and Christian Leadership in Action. When she's not at Garrigan you might see her working at Dairy Queen or at the hospital. Brooke plans to be a pre-med major at college, and we wish her all the best.
If you watch a Garrigan basketball game, you're sure to recognize Lindsay Becker from her red hair. Lindsay is also active in volleyball and track, as well as drama and the National Honor Society. She plans to attend a four-year university after high school. Good luck, Lindsay!
On our Golden Bear calendar today there's the state speech contest in Spencer. Also this weekend workers will be adjusting the sound quality of the speakers in the Garrigan gym.
Monday night the freshman basketball teams host Humboldt. Then Tuesday there's a JV-varsity quad, with the Golden Bears playing at Humboldt. Wednesday we'll have a jeans day to raise money for Gala 2004.
Thursday the freshmen play at Algona High, and then next Friday the Bears continue their conference season with a big match-up against St. Edmond in Fort Dodge.
Finally this week we'd like to congratulate senior David Rasmussen who was recently selected to the Academic All-State Football Team. Nice going, Dave!
