Good morning! I'm Sarah Schmitt! BBBBB: And I'm Andrea Schiltz! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show where we let you know everything that's news at Bishop Garrigan High School.
If you haven't been to the Garrigan website lately, it's time to come back and take another look. Garrigan was the first area school in cyberspace, and our website is already in its sixth year on the internet. The site was started as a project by gifted and talented students, but most of the newest additions come from the school's new technology classes. English teacher Sarah Freking is in charge of the web design class, and her students have worked hard to overhaul the school's online home.
The sports section of the website has gotten a lot of attention. One of the best new features is an online trophy case displaying all the records from four decades of Golden Bear sports. Senior Nick Even created this section, where alumni who hold the old records can check in to see if today's Bears are breaking them. Nate Hanson and Tony Schmitt have completely revised the photo-packed football section, and Amanda Freking created an all-new section about the Golden Bear cheerleaders.
For several years now, one of the most popular sections of the BGHS website has been the virtual tour, with pictures of every room in the school. Some of those pictures have gotten out of date, so Andrew Hellman and Mark Meister have been snapping pictures all over the building so they can keep the tour current and interesting. Greg Besch and Chris Missal have created a brand new science section, including some state-of-the-art graphics. There's are also new student council, publications, and English class pages, and other students have been working on updating the pages for band, choir, and the summer sports.
In addition to all those pages, you can also check out all our scripts from the "Bear Facts"--where the complete history of the school is archived online. You can also shop for Garrigan clothing and novelties at the online school store, check out the monthly activities calendar, get in touch with alumni, and check out webpages for art and math classes, the library, or the counseling office. Whenever the Golden Bear football team plays a game this fall, you can bet there will be a big crowd cheering them on from the sidelines. And in front of that crowd-whether it's sunny, rainy, or snowy-will be the Golden Bear cheerleaders. This year's cheerleading captains are Heather Johnson and Amanda Freking; and the other varsity cheerleaders include Deanna Kohlhaas, Allison Courtney, Tricia Eischen, Heather Johnson, Sherri Kollasch. Rounding out the squad are Janet Kramer, Laura Seeley, Monica Studer, and Ashley Thompson.
The JV cheerleaders are also an important part of our school spirit. Among those cheering on the JV Bears are "Bear Facts" announcers Sarah Scmitt and Autumn Thompson. Melissa Vaske, Becca Studer, Cassie Reker, and Keshar Nadkarni are some of the other JV cheerleaders, as are Nikki Loebig, Lindsey Eischen, Nicole Krieps, and Rachel Foth. We're proud to salute Coach Deb Trenary and all the cheerleaders for the great job they do all season long.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Steven Courtney and Angie Kohlhaas. Here to tell you about them is Amanda Wolf.
When the seniors were voting for "Friendliest" in their class last week, a lot of people put Steven Courtney's name on their ballots. Steven is a laid back guy who likes to have fun. You may have seen him working at Fareway or slugging hits for the Golden Bear baseball team. He's also one of the top intramural basketball players, and he's very active with the Big Brothers program. Steven will be off to college next year, where he plans to go into pre-law. We wish him all the best.
Angie Kohlhaas is close to setting the school record for most medals by a girls' cross-country runner. If you've ever been to a school fine arts event-like a play or a concert, or even a holy day mass-you've probably heard Angie accompanying the singers on the piano. She keeps busy with drama, speech, quiz bowl, and the math team, and even with all that she manages to maintain top-notch grades. Angie could go anywhere she wanted for college, but she's looking at smaller schools around the Midwest. We wish both Angie and Steven the very best of luck.
Thanks! On this week's Golden Bear calendar, today the Garrigan Solid Gold Marching Band is in Fort Dodge for the state marching band competition. Then tomorrow there's CYO volleyball at LeMars Gehlen.
Monday is Parents' Night for volleyball and cross country, as the volleyball girls host Algona High. Also that night the freshman football team plays at Clarion Goldfield.
Tuesday nine Student Council members will be travelling to Webster City for the North Central Conference leadership summit. Then on Tuesday night, Garrigan will be hosting the conference cross-country meet at the Whittemore Golf Club.
Wednesday morning there's a student council meeting, and that night the volleyball team travels to Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. Then next Thursday there's freshman try-outs for large group speech.
Next Friday the football Bears travel to Burnside to play Southeast Webster, and then next Saturday we'll be hosting Iowa's largest academic competition as 69 teams come to Algona for the tenth annual BGHS Quiz Bowl.
