And I’m Cassidy Vitzthum! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, your weekly radio update from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Fifteen Garrigan students are over in Spencer this morning for the Iowa High School Speech Association state large group contest. Garrigan earned six Division I ratings at the district contest two weeks ago at Algona High, and all those events are performing at state today. Our Musical Theatre group, Mark Fakler and Christian Matthews, already presented their selection “The Proposal” from Titanic, and right now freshmen Chloe Garman and Levi Capesius are performing their ensemble acting piece “Spin the Bottle”.
Around 9:00 Garrigan’s radio broadcasters will perform. That group includes Mariah Bronk, Jake Hamilton, Levi Bernhard, Nick Bronk, Taylor Illg, and Nick Kayser. Then around 10:30 we’ll have two group improvisation entries, which feature Nick Bronk, Levi Bernhard, Sean Hart, Corey Weydert, and Kara Eischen. The final performance of the day is the Ensemble Acting piece “Space Quest”, which stars Mark Fakler, Betty Straub, and Morgan Frideres. Rehearsals have started for the 2014 BGHS spring play. The drama department is presenting a comedy called Murder with Tomato Sauce. The cast includes Morgan Frideres, Nick Bronk, Emily Riesenberg, Zach Kollasch, Nick Kayser, and Betty Straub; as well as Hannah Bernhard, Mark Fakler, Erin Quinlin, Carolyn Baxter, Levi Bernhard, and Brittany Kirsch.
Also starring in the play are Jake Hamilton, Mariah Bronk, Tony Kollasch, and Taylor Illg; plus James Quinlin, Levi Capesius, Johanna Vaske, and Chloe Garman. Mark your calendar now for Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29. Curtain time will be 7pm for Murder with Tomato Sauce.
It’s just over a month until the Golden Bear quiz bowl team hosts their fourth annual Community Quiz Bowl. Teams of any size from junior high up to adult are welcome to compete in this fun trivia challenge. The entry fee is just $25 per team, and the income will go to help with the quiz bowl team’s expenses when they travel to nationals in New Orleans. Choir director Linda Ferjak recently announced the members of the 2014 show choir and vocal jazz ensembles. This year’s show choir will include sopranos Morgan Frideres, Kara Eischen, Carolyn Baxter, Brittany Kirsch, Betty Straub, Johanna Vaske, Sophia Kaduce, Caroline Hamilton, and Taylor Frideres; plus altos Dorothy Kirsch, Mariah Bronk, Erin Quinlin, Kristin Condoleon, Taylor Hovey, Chloe Garman, and LeeAnn Eischen. Also in show choir are tenors Levi Capesius, Corey Weydert, Mark Fakler, Christian Matthews, Josh Hamilton, and Andrew Meister; as well as bass vocalists Jake Hamilton, Nick Bronk, Zach Kollasch, Tony Kollasch, Neal Koob, Taylor Illg, Nick Kayser, Andrew Thilges, and Jedd Magill.
Many of the same people are also in the vocal jazz ensemble. It features bass singers Neal Koob, Jake Hamilton, Tony Kollasch, Nick Bronk, and Zach Kollasch; tenors Christian Matthews, Levi Capesius, Corey Weydert, and Mark Fakler; altos Taylor Hovey, Dorothy Kirsch, Kristin Condoleon, Erin Quinlin, and Mariah Bronk; and sopranos Betty Straub, Carolyn Baxter, Kara Eischen, Brittany Kirsch, and Morgan Frideres. Congratulations, choir honorees!
There’s always something new to check out on the Garrigan website. Garrigan has one of the oldest and most comprehensive school websites anywhere. The school has had a home online for nineteen years, and all through that time the website has been designed and maintained primarily by Garrigan students. This year senior Brayton Loss and junior Tyler Schnurr are working on the website as part of Mr. Burrow’s Specialized Technology Topics class. Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Nick Bronk. Here to tell you about her is Devin Degen.
We’ve already mentioned Nick Bronk’s name three times on this week’s show because of his involvement with speech and music. Nick has won awards in both choir and band, he’s been to state in cross-country, and he’s also active in track. His favorite classes are math courses like Statistics and Math Analysis. Nick is planning to go to South Dakota State, and he plans a career as a pharmacist. We wish him all the best in the future.
Thanks, Devin! On our Golden Bear calendar this week there’s state speech contest today in Spencer. Then on Monday the freshman boys have a basketball game at Eagle Grove.
Tuesday the JV and varsity boys travel to Clarion. Then on Wednesday there’s the reward day from the calendar drive last fall, with teacher inservice in the afternoon.
Girls basketball playoffs start on Thursday. The Bears will host Graettinger—Terrill that night in the regional opener. Next Friday is Valentine’s Day, and we’ll have a jeans day that day to raise money for After Prom.
Finally this week we want to congratulate English teacher Erin Miller, who gave birth to her son Braxton last Wednesday morning. Congratulations also to Lynn Miller, the President of the Bishop Garrigan Schools, who has another grandson.
