And I'm Katie Salz! Welcome to another edition of the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show where we keep you in updated on everything that's news at Bishop Garrigan High School.
The BGHS magazine drive is officially finished, and things went pretty well this year. Out official total was $12,132.97, which was almost $2,000 more than our school goal. The seniors came from behind to take first place among the four classes. They'll enjoy a pizza buffet for their efforts. The sophomores finished second, and they'll dine on Subway party subs. The third-place freshmen and the fourth-place juniors also met their class goals.
One hundred twenty-two students sold magazines this year. Junior Bill Vaske was the top salesman. He brought in more than $700 in sales just by himself. Andrew Missal and Mason Elbert were neck-and-neck in second and third places, with each of them turning in around $550. Scott Stence, Allison Even, Ross Froehlich, Theresa Reising, Jenna Kollasch, and Jacob Richter also sold over $200 each. There was also a special prize this year for the 21st place finisher. Amanda Elbert claimed that prize, with $142.86 in sales. Congratulations to everyone who sold, and thanks to everyone who supported the Garrigan magazine drive.
Twenty Golden Bears are over at Algona High this morning, competing in one of the larger quiz bowl tournaments of the season. Garrigan has four teams entered today. The first includes captain John Kohlhaas, together with Matt Courtney, Jacob Hellman, Jeff Lappe, and Jesse Bode. Another team features captain Amber Golwitzer, Anthony McGuire, Adam Cink, Scott Stence, and Jacob Ricther. On the third team are captain Alison Brandenburg, Spenser Rahm, Andrew Missal, Joe Rahm, and Gavin Freking. The final team is made up of captain Renee Taphorn, Samantha Kirsch, Jude Studer, Chris Scobba, and Jesse Studer. Good luck today to the quiz bowl team.
This is a busy time of year for quiz bowl. Next week the team will defend their championship at MOC/Floyd Valley. After that they'll be trying something new. The Golden Bears have volunteered to be part of the Trivia Champions Think-a-Thon. In this event, quiz bowlers get sponsors to make donations based on how many questions they can answer. The money goes to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Garrigan will be participating in Trivia Champions on Thursday, November 20th, so if someone on the quiz bowl team asks you to help out, we encourage you to give what you can.
All the fall sports teams have now finished up their seasons. At state cross-country last Saturday, sophomore Jacob Hellman ran the fastest for the Bears. While state wasn't the Bears' best race, we're still proud that they made it there. We're also proud of the volleyball team, who advanced to the regional play-offs. Six Golden Bears were named all-conference volleyball players. Jenna Kollasch was a unanimous first team pick, and Lindsay Becker also won first team honors. Nicole Reding and Maria Erpelding were second team selections, and Ashley McGuire and Miranda Boekelman were all-conference honorable mentions. Congratulations, everyone!
We'd also like to congratulate the danz squad members who competed at the state individual dance contest in Pella last week. Maria Erpelding, Nicole Krieps, April Wolf, and Jessica Cink all competed. All the girls brought home Division one ratings, and the Bears also brought home a trophy for their efforts. The group dance season begins next month, and we hope things continue to go well for the girls.
You have one more chance to see the Garrigan fall play. The curtain went up on Thirteen Past Midnight last night, and there's an encore performance at 7:30 tonight. Mark DeLange is directing this murder mystery. Among the cast members are John Kohlhaas, who plays a soap opera producer turned murder victim, Katelyn Besch as his bitter wife, Scott Stence, as the studly star of the soap opera, and Brandon Rowley as an alcoholic TV writer. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students, and they are available at the door. So be sure not to miss Thirteen Past Midnight.
Our senior spotlight this week shines on Mat Kirsch. Here to tell you about him is Adam Arndorfer.
Mat Kirsch's biggest activity throughout high school has been football, and he probably played his best game last week when the Bears took on St. Edmond. Mat kicked an extra point, and he got a couple of key tackles in Garrigan's victory over the Gaels. Mat comes to Garrigan from Wesley, and after high school he's looking at attending Iowa Lakes Community College. We wish Mat the very best of luck in the future.
Thanks, Adam! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's quiz bowl today with the Bears playing at Algona High.
Monday a large group of students will be on a field trip to Mall of America one of the rewards from the calendar drive in September. Girls basketball practice begins Monday night, and Monday and Tuesday we'll have parent/teacher conferences.
Again this year Garrigan's conferences will be at the Rochleau Center at St. Cecelia's. They'll start right after school both Monday and Tuesday nights.
Next Friday there's no school at Garrigan or Seton. That morning students in the nurse's aide class will be taking their clinical exam. Then next Saturday the quiz bowl team travels to Orange City.
