Facts", the weekly radio review of all the news from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
Today for the first time ever, the Golden Bear cross-country team will be competing in a CYO competition. All the high schools from around the Sioux City diocese will be running this morning at Holstein. The JV boys will start their race at 9am, followed by the varsity boys and then the girls. Good luck to Coaches Kohlhaas and Ahlers and all the cross-country runners.
Garrigan has had a very successful year so far in cross-country. Last Tuesday the team ran in the Estherville Lincoln Central Armstrong Ringsted Terril meet at Estherville. The biggest news of the day came when Matt Courtney won the freshman race, finishing the five-kilometer course in just 19 minutes, 23 seconds. For the varsity boys Matt Studer, Jeff Hellman, and John Kohlhaas all medalled-finishing in eighth, tenth, and 25th places. Garrigan as a team finished in 8th place among 13 teams competing. Congratulations to everyone involved.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association recently released its sportsmanship ratings for baseball season. We're pleased to say that the Golden Bear coaches, players, and spectators were all rated "outstanding" in sportsmanship. Garrigan's players received the best rating of the groups, earning 1.19, on a scale where "1" is the best possible, and "5" is "unsatisfactory". The fans earned 1.26, and the coaches were rated 1.48. Both the player and spectator ratings were significantly better than the state average. Congratulations to all our good sports!
We've now played two football games for the season, and next week the Bears will start district play. At every game, some of the most important people on the sidelines are the Golden Bear football cheerleaders. The core of this year's group is seniors Allison Courtney, Stephanie Hilbert, Jamie Roethler, Laura Seeley, and Monica Studer. The varsity squad also includes juniors Lindsey Eischen, Rachel Foth, Kim Frideres, Nikki Loebig, Keshar Nadkarni, and Autumn Thompson.
There's also a big group of JV cheerleaders. Sophomores Brooke Myers, Cassie Recker, Becca Studer, and Melissa Vaske will be cheering at all the JV games. Together with them you'll see freshmen Katelyn Besch, Brianne Donahe, Amanda Fox, Samantha Kirsch, Jill Patterson, and Amanda Thompson. Best wishes to Coach Deb Trenary and all the cheerleaders!
The people those girls are cheering on include the freshman football players. People expected that Mark Parrish would be leading this year's frosh team, but he's basically on he "injured reserve" list. The freshman players include Bobby Murphy, Sean Kohlhaas, Sam Dittrich, Chris Buscher, Cole Vautier, Chris Reinhart, Dan Gisch, and Andrew Berte; as well as Derek Tindall, Brian Marso, Matt Vitzthum, Kyle Frideres, Jim Garman, and Mitch Buscher. Good luck to all of them!
Sports managers seldom get the recognition they really deserve. They help out at both practices and games, and without them things wouldn't go nearly as smoothly for the athletes. There are five managers in cross-country this year: seniors Rebecca McGuire and Mindy Buscher, juniors Steven Kellner and Rosie Kirsch, and sophomore Amber Golwitzer. In volleyball Debbie Kohlhaas works as a manager. We'd like to say thanks for the help all these students give.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Jenna Becker and Bob Brandenburg.
Jenna Becker is one of the stand-outs on the Golden Bear volleyball team. In other seasons you might see her on the basketball court or the track. She likes math and accounting classes, and away from school she enjoys hanging out with her friends. Jenna plans to attend UNI next year, and we wish her all the best.
You may have seen Bob Brandenburg stocking those blue light specials at K-Mart. At school he is best known for his accomplishments in speech and drama, and over the years he's also done well in music. He plans to major in performing arts at college. Good luck, Bob!
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's the CYO cross-country meet this morning at Holstein. Also today the varsity volleyball team plays at Emmetsburg.
Tomorrow is the fall festival at St. Joseph parish in Wesley. Then on Monday the Advanced Biology students will be taking a field trip.
Monday night there's JV football at West Bend/Mallard. Then on Wednesday the volleyball team plays at Humboldt and the cross-country team runs at Clear Lake.
Thursday we'll have an early dismissal for staff development. Then next Friday the football team travels to Laurens-Marathon.
Finally this week, we'd like to congratulate Coaches Rob and Wendi Meister on their newborn daughters, Mackenzie and Madison. The twins were born in late August in Mason City.
