Good morning! I'm Katrina Even!

And I'm Cassie Reising! Thanks for joining us for the "Bear Facts". Happy New Year from everyone here at Bishop Garrigan High School.

It seems as if quiz bowl has been in the news almost every week on "Bear Facts" this year, and that's true again as we enter 2010. Over Christmas break the team learned that for the second straight month they had gotten a perfect score in the online "20 Questions" quiz, a competition that combines knowledge and research skills. In December Garrigan was one of only six schools nationwide to score 20 out of 20. The other winning schools were from Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, Oklahoma, and Minnesota. Congratulations to the quiz bowl team!

There's quiz bowl action today, with the team traveling to the Twin Lakes Invitational at Sioux Central High School south of Spencer. This is the first year this tournament has existed, and the Bears will have three teams entered. The first team includes Lizzy Hohmeister, Grace Steil, Dustin Miller, Rachel Berte, and Matthew Fakler. A second team features veteran players Brittany Berte, Rebeccah Erdman, Jake Rosenmeyer, Anna Kollasch, and Michael Fakler. Rounding out the competitors are Drew Magill, Michael Hellman, John Richter, Philip Detrick, and Zachary Scobba. Good luck to Coach David Burrow and the quiz bowl team!

Intramural basketball season begins tomorrow. This year six teams will be competing for the coveted intramural title. The defending champions are captained by Mike Mergen. His team includes fellow seniors Joe Golwitzer, Dave Reding, Jacob Behr, Devin Tindall, Nick Foertsch, Luke McCall, Austin Wolf, D.J. Beletti, Elijah Gelhaus, and Bryan Berte.

It's been a few years since we've had a girls' team in intramurals, but this year Sarah Matthews and Ashley Bode are captains of an all-female team. Joining them are Chloe Behr, Rebecca Richter, Nicole Mergen, Kelsey Rahe, and Laura Richter. Another team of newcomers is the freshman team captained by Shawn Vaske. Shawn's teammates are Matthew Fakler, Charlie Thilges, Alex Matthews, Jason Reding, and their secret weapon-junior Dylan Kollasch.

Another veteran intramural team is captained by Travis Cruise and Jake Rosenmeyer and includes fellow juniors Kevin Laubenthal, Zach Zittritsch, Michael Hellman, Drew Magill, and Alex Hamilton. Philip Detrick is captain of a team with sophomores John Richter, Austin Salz, Craig Kohlhaas, and Sam Evers. The final team includes a mix of sophomores and juniors, with captain Mitch Rahm together with Billy Schiltz, Luke Eischen, Brandon Schiltz, Jordan Springer, and Eric Baumann. Good luck to all the intramural basketball teams!

The first semester is almost over. Next week we'll have semester tests at Garrigan. As always there's a special schedule, and we'll have open campus whenever we don't have tests. Each test is an hour long, and there are long breaks between the testing periods. Next Wednesday we'll have tests for periods 3, 2, and 7. Thursday are the period 1, 8, and 6 tests, and we'll finish semester tests on Friday with periods 4 and 5.

During semester tests two of the classes will have special lunches as their rewards from the magazine drive last fall. The juniors, who finished in first place, will enjoy the Godfathers buffet next Wednesday. Then on Thursday the second place seniors will feast on Subway party subs. Everyone else is on their own for lunch on test days, although the cafeteria serves school breakfast the same as always.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Kayla Schiltz and Dana Miller. Here to tell you about them is Rebeccah Erdman!

Kayla Schiltz is probably best known for her accomplishments in dance. She is part of the All-Iowa Honor Dance Squad and she helped lead the Golden Bear squad to the state championship. Kayla is also co-editor of the Garrigold yearbook, she's a National Honor Society member, and she was one of the candidates for Homecoming queen last fall. She'll be off to college next year, and we wish Kayla all the best in the future.

Dana Miller is a year-round athlete. He was an all-district football player and is one of the core players on the Golden Bear basketball team this winter. He runs track in spring and enjoys playing baseball in summer. Dana serves on student council as a senior class co-president, and over the years he's also been active in music. Dana will also be in college next year, and we wish him good luck!

Thanks, Rebeccah! On our Golden Bear calendar, there's quiz bowl today at Sioux Central. Then tomorrow afternoon intramural basketball begins. After intramurals are over the Knights of Columbus will hold their free throw contest in the Garrigan gym.

Monday the freshman boys basketball team hosts Eagle Grove. Then Tuesday there's a JV/varsity quad, with the Bears welcoming Clarion Goldfield. The math team will serve a spaghetti and ice cream supper during the games.

Wednesday semester tests begin. The juniors will enjoy lunch at Godfathers that day, while the seniors dine on party subs on Thursday. Thursday night the freshman and JV girls play West Bend Mallard.

The first semester ends on Friday. That night the varsity Bears travel to Iowa Falls.

That's our first "Bear Facts" for 2010. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
