Facts". Thanks for joining us for the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
Last Saturday three members of the Garrigan danz squad competed in the state solo dance competition in Pella. All three girls-Sarah Schmitt, Nikki Loebig, and Nicole Krieps-earned Division I ratings for their routines. Nicole got an even bigger honor. She came home with the fourth place trophy as one of the top dancers in the entire state. Congratulations to these girls on their accomplishments in dance.
Saturday was also a big day for the Golden Bear cross-country team. The boys ran in the state cross-country meet at Fort Dodge-the first Garrigan boys team in eighteen years to earn that honor. While they didn't win the state title, they did run well. Senior Jeff Hellman finished in 27th place, while junior John Kohlhaas was 62nd. Seth Rogers and Eric Cassmann also ran their best times of the season. As a team the Bears finished in 15th place among the eighteen top teams in the state. Congratulations to our cross-country runners!
Also last Saturday the math team competed in a Great Plains Math League competition in Sioux Center. The Garrigan team was made up mostly of freshmen, and they competed against juniors and seniors from other schools. Even so the Bears took home eight medals, and they finished in third place overall. Spenser Rahm earned top honors for the day, qualifying for the state math tournament next spring.
The annual BGHS calendar drive was a success. The fundraiser just ended, and this year we more than met the school goal, selling nearly $13,000 in subscriptions. The senior class dominated the awards, since all three of the top sellers were seniors. Jennifer Erpelding was #1 overall, followed by Molly Bartolo and Justin Fickbohm. We thank everyone who participated and everyone who bought their magazines from us at Garrigan.
This morning twenty-four Garrigan students are over at Algona High to compete in the AHS quiz bowl tournament. This is the third tournament of the year for both schools, and Garrigan is hoping to continue their success. Garrigan's team captains today are John Kohlhaas, Amber Golwitzer, Jacob Hellman, and Zac Lickteig. We wish good luck to them and to all the quiz bowl team.
Tonight is your last chance to see "Who's Acting Up at Garrigan", the first-ever fine arts extravaganza. This variety show brings together students, alumni, and faculty for an evening of comedy, music, dance, and all-around fun. Tickets are just $5 for adults and $3 for students, and all the proceeds go to benefit special fine arts projects at the school. Curtain time is 7:00 tonight, and we encourage everyone to join us for Garrigan fine arts extravaganza.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Joe Hellman and Katie Von Ruden. Here with the details is

Joe Hellman comes to Garrigan from the Burt area. Joe is active in baseball, basketball, football, and track. He's also an honor student who enjoys quiz bowl and announcing here on the "Bear Facts". Joe plans to attend Minnesota State University next year, and we wish him all the best.
Without a doubt Katie Von Ruden's biggest activity is golf. She's one of the reasons for the girls golf teams success in the past few years. Katie works hard in classes like Spanish and says her favorite time of day is study hall. Next year she'd like to go to college in Arizona. Good luck, Katie!
Thanks, Scott! On our Golden Bear calendar today, there's quiz bowl at Algona High. Then tonight is the final performance of "Who's Acting Up at Garrigan", the fine arts extravaganza.
Sunday American Education Week begins. There's the Rite of Welcoming for confirmation candidates in parish masses that morning, and that afternoon St. Cecelia's will hold their parish dinner.
Sunday night the football cheerleaders will hold their banquet. Monday about twenty students will be attending the North Central Iowa Choir Directors Association honor choir in Forest City. Then that afternoon girls basketball practice begins.
Tuesday nearly half the school will be on a special trip to Minnesota, where they'll stop at Cabela's, the Medford outlet center and Mall of America. That's their reward for outstanding participation in the calendar drive last September.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights we'll have parent/teacher conferences. Again this year the Garrigan teachers will be at tables at the Rochleau Center at St. Cecelia's.
Thursday night the Golden Bear football
and volleyball
teams will hold their awards potluck at the KC Hall. Friday there's no school at Garrgian or Seton. Then next Saturday the quiz bowl team travels to Orange City.
