And I'm Kathy Kohlhaas! Thanks for joining us for the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
There's a busy week coming up for almost every activity at Garrigan. Today the spotlight is on the Solid Gold Marching Band. Mr. Freking and the band are down in Ft. Dodge this morning, getting ready to perform in the state marching competition. Garrigan won their division last week at Algona Band Day, and everybody's hoping for a good showing at state. The band performs at 9:30am, and we wish them all the best.
Tomorrow the focus shifts to volleyball. The Golden Bear volleyball team will be making the long trip to LeMars for the annual CYO volleyball tournament. Gehlen High School hosts the tournament, and the Bears have done fairly well in recent years. For seniors Miranda Boekelman, Holly Lancaster, and Lindsay Schiltz, this will be their last trip to CYO. We wish them and all the volleyball team good luck tomorrow.
Next Tuesday the cross-country team will be running in the North Central Conference tournament at Hampton. Both the boys and girls runners have been doing very well this fall. Last week the girls cross-country team won the Dick Bell Invitational Tournament in Eagle Grove. Maria Kohlhaas, Tami Lallier, Kelli Black, and Carrie Courtney all medalled for the Bears. On the boys side, Brandon Rowley finished in 10th place, and Jacob Hellman, Matt Courtney, and Chris Scobba also medalled. The boys finished fourth behind three rated 2-A teams. The 1-A Bears have not yet lost to any school in their class.
This weekend four Garrigan students are in Des Moines for the state HOSA conference. HOSA is the Health Occupations Students of America, an organization for people who are planning careers in various medical fields. Attending for Garrigan are Lizzie Mayer, Jessica Berte, Jennifer Miller, and Kayla Reding. In addition to competing at state, HOSA has been raising money to install electronic defibrillators at Garrigan and Algona High. Good luck, HOSA!
We're pleased to congratulate five members of the BGHS danz squad. Last week Ashley Shaw, Jessica Cink, Michaela Pease, Jennifer Vaske, and Monica Schiltz learned that they had been selected to the All-Iowa Honor Drill Team. The honor group will perform next March at the state basketball tournament. Congratulations to all the Garrigan girls who were selected for All-State.
Three Garrigan musicians are also hoping to earn all-state honors. Bridget Doughan, Jacob Richter, and Chris Kirsch will be auditioning for all-state two weeks from now. They've been preparing a wide variety of music, including Irish and Russian songs and traditional religious songs like "Wade in the Water" and "The Pilgrims' Hymn". Good luck to the all-state auditioners.
Another group that's been busy is quiz bowl. Next week Garrigan will host their fourteenth annual tournament, which once again will be the biggest academic competition in Iowa. Sixty-six teams from all over northern Iowa will be on hand. Returning seniors for the Golden Bears include three-time national veteran Matt Courtney, as well as Anthony McGuire, Jacob Richter, Renee Taphorn, Brianne Donahe, and Samantha Kirsch.
Other older players include Alison Brandenburg, Jacob Hellman, Gavin Freking, Spenser Rahm, Jeff Lappe, Joe Rahm, Holly Lancaster, Emily DeWaard, Jude Studer, Andrew Missal, Seth Rogers, Jesse Studer, Bridget Doughan, and Brandon Rowely. Also competing in the home tournament are Chris Loebach, JoAnn Kirsch, Chris Scobba, Josh Rahm, Amanda Cruise, Alex Bradley, Brian Capesius, and Joe Dailey. Rounding out the group are freshmen Chris Gelhaus, Chad Lambert, Brent Kajewski, Mike Garman, Shane Koob, and Jacob Zittritsch. Good luck, quiz bowl!
Our senior spotlight this week shines on Jim Garman. Here to tell you about him is Alex Bradley.
Jim Garman is an Algona native who enjoys snacking and spending time with his friends. He has played football for four years and is also active in track and intramural basketball. He is a student council member who is one of the co-presidents of the Class of 2005. Over the years Jim has also been in choir and Spanish club, and away from school you might see him working. Jim would like to major in business in college, and we wish him all the best.
Thanks, Al! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's the state marching band contest in Ft. Dodge today. Garrigan takes the field about half an hour from now. Also this weekend is the state HOSA conference, and tomorrow the volleyball team plays at CYO in LeMars.
Monday night the freshman and sophomore football players travel to Eagle Grove. Tuesday the cross-country team runs in the conference meet at Hampton. Then on Wednesday the juniors will take the PSAT and the sophomores will take the ASSET test.
Wednesday night teachers, board members, and interested parents and students will be on hand to discuss our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan. The meeting will begin at 6:30pm in the cafeteria.
Thursday the volleyball team plays at Clarion. Then on Friday the cross-country team runs at Spencer and the football team travels to Belmond. Finally next Saturday we'll have the big BGHS quiz bowl.
