And I'm Sarah Schmitt! Welcome to a special edition of the "Bear Facts", where we're celebrating Homecoming, 2000, at Bishop Garrigan High School.
While it seems early for Homecoming, next week is already the fourth week of school. We'll be putting up the decorations tomorrow for Garrigan's forty-second Homecoming celebration. Our theme this year is "A Week in Hollywood", and all week long we'll be saluting the Silver Screen. Monday will be "Best Picture Day"-when everyone will dress up like a character from their favorite film. Then on Tuesday we'll have "Breakfast Club Day"-where we'll salute the early morning by wearing pajamas.
Wednesday will be "Baywatch Day". Much as some people would like to, you won't see thong bikinis at Garrigan that day. What you will all kinds of other beachwear, though. Then on Thursday we'll have "Colors Day"-with everyone in the traditional black and gold. Finally Friday will be "A Day at the Oscars"-and we'll be dressing up for the occasion by wearing our best clothes.
Last week the senior class nominated this year's Homecoming royal court. The Class of 2001 is one of the biggest classes we've had in years at Garrigan, and it certainly wasn't easy for them to select just five boys and five girls as royalty. When all the votes were counted, the finalists for Homecoming queen were Lori Elsbecker, Amanda Freking, Heather Johnson, Kelly Kunkel, and Sara Reding. On the boys' side, this year's king candidates are Steven Courtney, Hank Greer, Ben Lickteig, Brad Nelson, and John Steier. Congratulations to all the members of the royal court!
Part of the Homecoming fun is the annual class competition, where each class shows its spirit by creating special decorations for the occasion. Tomorrow we'll be putting up hallway decorations. The seniors passed on the traditional main lobby and chose to decorate the more spacious gym lobby instead. That gave the juniors the main lobby. The sophomores will be decorating the science hallway in the middle of the school, while the freshmen go to the north end to decorate the English hallway.
We'll be building floats for the Homecoming parade on Tuesday night. The freshmen will build their float at Algona Marine and Sport, while the sophomores will be at Ernie Williams. The junior float construction site is Buscher Brothers' Implement, and the seniors will be building their float at Reding's Gravel and Excavating. You can see the results of everybody's work in the parade on Friday.
We'll be having a special assembly Thursday morning, where each class will present a special Homecoming skit. The classes will also compete for the highest participation in the dress-up days, and the final event will be to see who shows the most spirit at the coronation and pep rally Thursday night. The winning class will be announced at the end of the pep rally, and we wish all four classes good luck in the competition.
On last week's show we told you about the football and cross-country teams. The Golden Bear volleyball team is also looking for a good season this fall. Returning seniors on the team are Sara Seeley, Kelly Kohlhaas, Andrea Kramer, Sara Reding, and Molly Meyer. The juniors in volleyball include Ashley Arndorfer, Mindy Buscher, Jenna Becker, and Shelly DeVries. There are also four seniors on the varsity volleyball team. They are Chelsie Wood, Lisa Even, Janel Richter, and Nellie Fowler. Good luck to Coaches Collison, Meister, and Sankey-and all the volleyball team!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Lynn Kohlhaas and Chris Missal. Lynn Kohlhaas comes to Garrigan from the West Bend area. During the day she challenges herself with tough classes like Math V, Physics, and Computer-Aided Design. When school's out, you'll see her competing for the math team, quiz bowl, and golf. Lynn plans to major in engineering at college, and we wish her all the best.
Chris Missal's number one interest is technology. Besides technology, he studies a lot of unique topics, like the Japanese he's taking as part of the gifted and talented program. When he's not in class or the computer lab, you might find him on the quiz bowl team or playing intramurals. After high school, Chris is looking at going to college in the home of Microsoft-Redomond, Washington. We wish him the very best in the future.
On our Golden Bear calendar, there's a cheerleading stump camp at Garrigan today, and this morning the varsity volleyball team is in action at Emmetsburg. Tomorrow is the parish festival in Wesley, and we'll be putting up the decorations for "A Week in Hollywood".
Monday the ecology classes will be taking a field trip. That night the JV football squad hosts West Bend/Mallard. Then on Tuesday we'll be building floats for Homecoming.
Wednesday night there's cross county at Clear Lake and the volleyball team hosts Humboldt. Then Thursday morning we'll have the special assembly for Homecoming skits, and that night we'll be crowning our 2000 Homecoming king and queen.
Friday morning is the traditional Homecoming liturgy. We'll have the big parade down State Street at 4:00 Friday afternoon, and before the big football game the danz squad will be sponsoring a potato bar.
Finally this week-a big thank-you to all the people who helped out with the annual Garrigan calendar drive these past two weeks. We're pleased to say that we went well beyond our goal and sold a total of 2,659 raffle calendars. That means we took in over $66,000-most of which will go to buying badly needed new buses for the school.
