THE BEAR FACTS

March 10, 2001

Good morning! I'm Jeff Hellman!

And I'm Amanda Wolf! You're listening to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

We'd like to start out today with a special congratulations to Garrigan senior Dan Besch. Dan is one of only a handful of Garrigan or Seton students who participate in the Boy Scouts for the past eleven years, and tonight at a special ceremony at St. Cecelia's, he will receive Scouting's highest honor-the rank of Eagle Scout. Dan has been active in Scouts for eleven years, and he has won many honors in the organization. He is carrying on a family tradition, since two years ago his brother Doug also became an Eagle Scout. Congratulations, Dan!

There's always something new happening at Garrigan. This year, something new is a special video of memories for the class of 2001. The video is being created by seniors like Sara Kollasch, Janet Kramer, and Kelly Kunkel, who are studying television production through the career options program at Iowa Lakes Community College. They've been taking their camera through the halls, asking students and teachers for to comment on their favorite memories of their years at BGHS. The video is expected to have its debut screening at the After-Prom Party next month.

It's registration time again. This week all the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors received course booklets and schedule forms, and all week they and they've been busy visiting with their homeroom teachers to plan their classes for the 2001-2002 school year. There's some classes everybody takes-like U.S. History, Government, Economics, Biology, American Literature, Developmental Composition, and-of course-Religion. Almost everyone takes classes like Geometry and Advanced Algebra; and classes like Chemistry and Spanish are also very popular.

There's other classes that serve special interests or needs. Art teacher Steve Brosnan teaches eight different courses, on a rotating basis with different classes available each year. There's a wide variety of technology classes-where students learn everything from how to use the Microsoft Office package to how to design web pages to how to maintain computers and network systems. There are also classes like Athletic Training, Housing and Interior Design, and Peer Helper, and Business Law that serve students with a variety of special interests.

Some of Garrigan's most popular classes are in health occupations. They are taught by Iowa Lakes nursing instructor Jeanne Wunder. Mrs. Wunder has been at Garrigan for eighteen years, now, and the health program has kept growing all that time. Through the Garrigan-ILCC health program, students can become certified as nurse's aides, first responders, and emergency medical technicians. Many students have gone on from these health classes to careers in fields like medicine and veterinary science.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on David Monson and Scott Black. Here to tell you about them is Joe Hellman.

David Monson is proud to serve his country as a member of the Iowa National Guard. Because of his guard duties, he spends much of his time on weekends in his army uniform. When he's off duty, he likes to relax and have lots of fun. He also enjoys activities like intramural basketball. We wish David the best of luck in the future.

Scott Black has been called the "Super-Fan". You'll see him at almost every Golden Bear sporting event, cheering on the Bears. Scott is also an athlete himself-he especially enjoys baseball and track. He also enjoys quiz bowl, and he's active in church activities at St. Cecelia's. Scott will be a college man next year, and we wish him all the best.

Thanks, Joe! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, tonight there's the Eagle Scout ceremony for Dan Besch. Then tomorrow afternoon the danz squad has their spring show.

Intramurals also continue tomorrow, and at night the boys' basketball team will have their awards potluck.

Thursday we'll have an early dismissal, because of teacher in-service. School will get out at 12:45pm. Next Friday the drill team will have their banquet, and then on Saturday, there's the state individual speech.

That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
