And I'm Monica Schiltz! This is the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show where we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
State champions! It's not very often that any school gets to say that about any of their activities, but we've gotten pretty used to saying that about our danz squad here at Garrigan. After last weekend, we get to say it again. The danz squad competed at the Iowa state dance and drill competition last Saturday, and they brought home a carload of trophies, including a state championship.
Garrigan took first place for their jazz routine, entitled "More, More, More" or "When the Best Things in Life Are Free". They also earned a Division One and fourth place statewide for their pom routine. In addition the girls received the Dstinguished Academic Award, the Community Service Award, and the Sportsmanship Trophy. Their championship in jazz again qualifies BGHS to compete at the national level. One possibility is to return to the NDA West Coast Classic, the event they won two years ago. That would be held in late March at Knott's Berry Farm in California.
The Golden Bear danz squad is coached by Colleen Conway-Schiltz and Nikki Loebig. The squad incudes All-Iowa Drill Team qualifiers Ashley Shaw, Jessica Cink, Michaela Pease, Monica Schiltz, and Jenn Vaske. Other juniors in dance are Melissa Hilbert, Lizzie Mayer, Amanda Shaw, Tara Trenary, and Ashley Waller. The danz squad also includes sophomores Laura O'Kane, Candace Schiltz, and Marisa Spain, freshman Emily Behr, alternate Taryn Vitzthum, and manager Casey Arndorfer. Congratulations to our state champion dancers!
As you listen to our broadcast this morning, eight Garrigan students are down in Ames preparing to take some of the hardest tests of their lives. Matt Courtney, Jeff Lappe, Spenser Rahm, Tony Rouse, Chris Scobba, Dylan Freking, Krissy Kohlhaas, and Kent Recker are all part of the Golden Bear math team. They're at Iowa State University today competing in the Great Plains Math League. Math competitions involve a series of tests-some of them involve a lot of quick answers, others involve working out complicated problems, and still others require working together as a team. Garrigan has been very successful in math competition, and we hope this year's team does well too.
Basketball season is off to a good start, especially for the boys team. If you go to games this winter, you can't miss the basketball cheer squad urging the Bears to victory. The boys basketball cheerleaders are Amanda Fox, Jill Patterson, Amanda Thompson, Kathy Kohlhaas, and Courtney Mergen. Cheering on the girls are Sadie Foertsch, Hope Grein, Kandice Roethler, Anna Bormann, and Emily Reising. The JV cheer squad includes Amanda Cruise, Stephanie Kollasch, Kendra Plathe, and Britteny Stone. Angie Fox coaches the basketball cheerleaders, and we thank them for all their hard work.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Anthony McGuire. Here to tell you about him is Denise Kohlhaas.
Anthony McGuire is a Bancroft native carries on the baseball tradition of that town. In school he enjoys working with computers and technology. He's a four-year member of the quiz bowl and math teams, and he's also an announcer here on the "Bear Facts". Away from Garrigan, you might see Anthony taking classes at Iowa Lakes, working at Bancroft Food Center, or serving at mass at St. John's. He'll be off to college next year, and we wish him all the best.
Thanks, Denise. On our Golden Bear calendar this week there's the Great Plains Math League competition today at Iowa State University. Monday we'll have a prayer service to celebrate the third week of Advent.
Monday night the freshman and JV basketball teams play St. Ed's. The girls will be at home, while the boys play in Ft. Dodge. Then on Tuesday the JV and varsity Bears play at Clear Lake.
Wednesday night we'll have the annual Christmas band concert and art show. Show time is 7pm, with the art projects on display beforehand.
Thursday the freshman and JV teams play Pocahontas. Again the girls are home and the boys are away. Then next Friday the Bears host a basketball quad with Hampton Dumont. The JV games begin at 4:45, with the varsity games starting at 6:30.
Finally this week we'd like to congratulate cross-country coach Daryl Kohlhaas and cross-country captain Matt Courtney. The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced this week that Coach Daryl Kohlhaas was named district coach of the year. Matt Courtney received academic all-state honors. Congratulations to Q and Coach K.
