And I'm Brooke Myers! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Bishop Garrigan really cleaned up at Band Day last weekend. It all started with the Tornado Alley Run in the morning, where Garrigan students, faculty, and alumni dominated the awards. Sophomore Brandon Rowley was the overall winner in the men's 5-K race, and graduate Greg Winkel won in the older age group. In the men's 10-K race, recent graduate Kyle Wieland won overall, while Garrigan senior John Kohlhaas finished second. Coaches Daryl Kohlhaas, Marty Wadle, and John Bartolo also had strong races. On the women's side, Garrigan graduate Judy Vautier was the overall 5-K winner. Freshman Maria Kohlhaas finished second overall and won the 10-K race. Congratulations to all the Tornado Alley runners!
The race was just the start of a great day for Garrigan. Band Day is really all about music, and the
Solid Gold Marching Band really showed their talent. Garrigan dominated the 1-A division, taking home the first place trophies in both the parade and field competitions. Congratulations to director Dennis Freking, flag choreographer Colleen Conway-Schiltz, and the whole Bishop Garrigan Solid Gold Marching Band!
Band Day was really just a warm-up for the band's biggest day of the year. Today is state marching band competition. Garrigan's musicians are in Ft. Dodge this morning, tuning up their instruments. The band brought home a "I" from last year's state competition, and they're looking to repeat his year. They'll be performing at 10:30 this morning at Dodger Stadium. We encourage everyone to drive on down to Ft. Dodge, listen to a great performance, and cheer the band on to more success!
The Golden Bear cross-country team just continues their winning ways. Last Tuesday they brought home the championship trophy from the Eagle Grove invitational tournament, their fourth team victory of the season. Five Golden Bears medalled at the meet---Brandon Rowley, John Kohlhaas, Matt Courtney, Chris Scobba, and Jacob Hellman--and they set another record for best team score. Maria Kohlhaas, Marissa Spain, and Alison Brandenburg medalled on the girls side, and Donnie Monson brought home a ribbon in the JV competition.
The boys cross country team has now defeated more than 100 other teams, while losing to only 7-all from much larger schools. That means things are looking pretty good for the rest of the season. Next Tuesday the Bears will be back in Eagle Grove to run in the North Central Conference meet. Friday they'll finish their regular season at Spencer. Then the following Thursday they're hoping to win the district championship at Galva-Holstein. The state meet will be November 1 in Ft. Dodge. The football and volleyball teams have also been doing great. After soundly defeating Burnside Southeast Webster, which the #3 team in the state had beaten by just one point, the football Bears went on to pommel North Iowa last week. They faced their toughest competition of the season last night when they hosted Lake Mills, and next week they'll take West Hancock-the team that's gotten the rating the Bears feel they deserve. In volleyball, Garrigan got big wins over Eagle Grove and Humboldt this past week. Tomorrow they'll be in LeMars for the annual CYO tournament. Good luck to both the volleyball and football teams!
Quiz bowl season is about to begin. Next Saturday Garrigan will again host one of the largest academic tournaments in America, with sixty-six teams competing. The Bears are expecting another great year in quiz bowl. Two-time national veterans John Kohlhaas and Matt Courtney are back, and they'll be the core of this year's team. The team also has a large core of seniors, including Amber Golwitzer, Scott Stence, Eric Cassmann, Jesse Bode, Josh Broesder, Adam Cink, Mason Elbert, and Kris Sutter. All together thirty-nine Golden Bears will be competing in quiz bowl this year, and we wish them and Coach David Burrow good luck all season long!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Tyler Rolling and Colby Reding. Here to tell you about them is Michaela Mescher.
Colby Reding comes to Garrigan from the Luverne area. You probably know his name best for football, but he's also run track and he lettered in basketball cheerleading. Colby's intramural basketball team won the school championship last year, and he's also part of the area's championship paintball team. Away from Garrigan you might see him working at Hy-Vee. Colby plans to go to Iowa State next year, and we wish him all the best.
Tyler Rolling comes to Garrigan all the way from Corwith. His top activities are probably band and quiz bowl, both of which he's been active in all through high school. Tyler is also a four-year runner in cross-country and track. He'll also be off to college next year. Good luck, Tyler!
On our Golden Bear calendar, today is the state marching band contest. Garrigan competes at 10:30 this morning at Dodger Stadium in Ft. Dodge. Then tomorrow there's CYO volleyball in LeMars.
Monday the volleyball team plays at Webster City. Also that night there's freshman and sophomore football, with the Bears hosting Eagle Grove. Then on Tuesday the cross-country team runs in the conference meet at Eagle Grove.
Wednesday there's no school at Garrigan-partly due to teacher in-service and partly as our reward for doing so well in the calendar drive last month. Friday the cross-country team runs at Spencer and the football team travels to take on Britt West Hancock.
Finally this week, we'd like to send out get well wishes to principal Mike Stence and science teacher Tom Froehlich, both of whom were hospitalized this past week. We've been thinking of you, and we look forward to seeing you back at school.
