And I'm Laura Kellner! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", your weekly radio update from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Homecoming is here! This coming week we'll be celebrating "the Garrigan Olympics" for our big 2004 Homecoming celebration. The fun begins tomorrow afternoon at 4:00, when we'll have the annual powder puff football game. This year's seniors have been on winning teams all through high school, and they're expecting to cruise to a victory again this year. The sophomores and juniors plan to play tough, though, and it should be a good competition.
The big difference for this year's Homecoming will happen Wednesday, when we'll have a special game day with everyone participating in the Garrigan Olympics. Everyone in school will participate in different events. There are athletic competitions-like kickball, dodgeball, volleyball, and tug-of-war-as well as a trivia contest, Texas hold-em and backgammon tournaments, a video game competition, a lip sync contest, and games of ultimate Frisbee and Twister. Everyone should have a fun day, and it will certainly make this year's Homecoming different from the past.
Like every year we'll have special dress days for each day of Homecoming week. Monday will be "Pajama Day", and everyone will dress in their favorite sleepwear. Tuesday we'll have "Jersey Day", with people supporting their favorite teams and athletes. For the games on Wednesday we'll have "Class Color Day". The seniors will dress in black, the juniors in blue, the sophomores in yellow, and freshmen in orange. Thursday we'll have the traditional "Black and Gold Day", and Friday we'll be "pimped out" in our best clothes for "Dress-Up Day".
Every year at Homecoming we have a competition among the four classes to see who shows the best school spirit. This year all the Olympic events on game day will count for part of the class competition. So will the powder puff game, the dress-up days, and floats, hoops, and pep rally skits. Something different this year is that we're holding a food drive as part of the class competition. The classes will receive points based on how much they bring in to donate to the Kossuth Food Pantry. We'll let you know how the competition came out on next week's show.
We have the smallest senior class in school history this year, which is why at the coronation next Wednesday you'll see literally one-fourth of our seniors up on stage. Our Homecoming queen candidates this year are Lindsay Schiltz, Nicole Reding, Kristi Reding, Jill Patterson, and Brianne Donahe. The nominees for Homecoming king are Matt Vitzthum, Derek Tindall, Brian Marso, Jim Garman, and Matt Courtney. We'll fill you in on the winners next week.
The Golden Bear cross-country team got up very early this morning. As you're listening to this broadcast, they're over in Holstein warming up for the CYO meet. Both the boys and girls teams made a great showing last Tuesday in Estherville, with each team earning four medals. On the girls side, Kelly Black set a new school record by covering the course in 16 minutes, 36 seconds-which was good for 18th place. Maria Kohlhaas, Tami Lallier, Marisa Spain, and Alison Brandenburg also medalled for the varsity girls.
Chris Scobba led the Golden Bear boys, with a 13th place finish. Matt Courtney, Brandon Rowley, and Jacob Hellman also earned medals in the varsity boys race. Four Garrigan girls also ran in the JV division, and all of them earned medals. Carrie Courtney won the JV race, with Krissy Kohlhaas, Bridget Doughan, and Samantha Kirsch close behind. Congratulations on a great showing Tuesday, and good luck today at CYO to all our cross-country team!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Derek Tindall. Here to tell you about him is Alex Bradley.
If you've picked up a copy of any newspaper in the area, you've probably seen Derek Tindall on the sports page. Most recently a photo of Derek covered nearly half a page in the Fort Dodge Messenger. Derek was a football MVP as a junior, and he's also a multi-year letterwinner in both basketball and track. Aside from sports, he's an honor student who's 1been president of the Class of 2005 for three straight years. Derek plans to major in finance at college, and we wish him all the best after high school.
Thanks, Alex. On our Golden Bear calendar this week, the cross-country team is running in the CYO meet at Holstein. Also this morning, the varsity volleyball team plays at Emmetsburg.
Tomorrow Homecoming week begins. We'll have the powder puff football game tomorrow at 4:00. Then Monday we'll build Homecoming floats while the JV football team hosts West Bend/Mallard.
Tuesday the volleyball team hosts Algona High. Then on Wednesday we'll have a day of games as we enjoy "the Garrigan Olympics". School gets out at 12:45 that day for a faculty inservice.
Wednesday night is the big Homecoming coronation and pep rally. The festivities will be at 7:30 in the Garrigan gym. Then on Thursday the cross-country team runs at Clear Lake and the volleyball team travels to Eagle Grove.
Next Friday we'll have our annual Homecoming mass at 10:50am. You can see the parade down State Street at 4pm, followed by a brief pep rally on the court house lawn. The Bears face St. Ansgar at 7:30 that night, with the Homecoming dance following the game.
