"The Bear Facts"
SEPTEMBER 11, 1999

Good morning! I’m John Mosbach!

I’m Tyler Struck!

And I’m Dennis Gisch! You’re listening to the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

The 1999 BGHS calendar drive is over, and we had another outstanding year. According to Development Director Diane Elbert, Garrigan and Seton students managed to sell 2,642 prize calendars this year, which is just short of a record. The school took in $66,050 from the calendar drive, and even after printing expenses and more than $10,000 in prizes, there should be plenty of money left over to help out the transportation budget. Thanks to everyone who bought a calendar and to all the students who sold them!

Homecoming, ’99 is just a week away. This year’s Homecoming theme is “Rockin’ to the Millennium,” and last week the seniors nominated the 1999 Homecoming royal court. The candidates for this year’s Homecoming queen include Corrie Stetzel, Bethany Miller, Jillian Trenary, Anna Erpelding, and Angie Froehlich. On the king side, the candidates are Brandon Donahe, Sam Lickteig, Eric Becker, Nate Frideres, and Justin Reding. We’ll be voting for Homecoming king and queen on Tuesday, September 21. Congratulations, and good luck to all the candidates!

The Golden Bear football team began their season last week with a commanding win over Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Then yesterday we had our home opener, with another big game against Algona High. The seniors on this year’s football team include the three of us—Dennis Gisch, John Mosbach, and Tyler Struck—co-captains Justin Reding and Eric Becker; and fellow seniors Joe Mayer, Derrick Frideres, Matt Dornbier, Jason Geving, and Eric Eischen. Other key seniors are Jake Kohlhaas, Duane MacGregor, Justin Frideres, Trent Youngwirth, Matt Rahm, Nick Roethler, and Josh Meyer.

This year’s Golden Bears also include thirteen juniors. Among them are Chad Mescher, Shannon Hall, Hank Greer, Ben Richter, Nick Even, Jake Rahm, and Andy Pierson; as well as Greg Besch, Tim Kohlhaas, David Monson, Dan Besch, Chris Thilges, and Paul Loebach. Rounding out the varsity squad are the sophomores—who include Andy Kardoes, Luke DeWaard, Mark Rasmussen, Adam Rahm, and Charlie Bormann. The rest of the sophomores are Scot Miller, Tony Detrick, Kevin Lind, Matt Golwitzer, and Andy Meyer. Good luck to Coach Marty Wadle and all the Golden Bears!

On the sidelines at all the games, you’ll find the football cheerleaders. This year’s cheerleading captains are Jillian Trenary and Anna Erpelding. Cheering along beside them are Val Besch, Amanda Hilbert, Amanda Freking, and Tricia Eischen. Also on the football cheer squad are Heather Johnson, Deanna Kohlhaas, Janet Kramer, and Sherri Kollasch. Deb Trenary is the cheerleading coach at Garrigan.

The Golden Bear cross-country team is also off to a great start this year. Last year it was mostly boys’ cross-country we talked about, but this year the biggest news is on the girls’ side. Last Tuesday at Estherville three Garrigan girls finished near the top of the pack. Sophomore Teresa McGuire was 12th, with a two-mile time of 13 minutes, 33 seconds. Junior Heather Stence was just 3 seconds behind, in 14th place. Finishing 16th was junior Angie Kohlhaas, with a time of 13:41. The other girls also ran strong. This year’s team includes senior Abby Gervais, junior Marian Studer, and sophomores Cathy Hellman and Melissa Lancaster.

On the boys’ side, sophomore Greg Fowler also medalled, with a 30th place finish overall. Special awards also went to 9th graders Matt Studer and Jeff Hellman, who finished 1st and 3rd in the freshman division. The Bears’ other runners include senior Nate Frideres; juniors Scott Black and Tony Schmitt; and sophomores Bob Brandenburg, Michael Loebach, and Jason Walker. Good luck to Coach Daryl Kohlhaas and the whole cross-country team!

Thirteen girls make up the core of this year’s Golden Bear volleyball team. There are three returning seniors—Pam Kramer, Angie Froehlich, and Nicole Erpelding. The bulk of the team is juniors. They include Mandy Roethler, Kelly Kunkel, Sara Seeley, Kelly Kohlhaas, Andi Kramer, Sara Reding, and Molly Meyer. Also playing varsity are sophomores Ashley Arndorfer and Jenna Becker, and freshman Janel Richter. Best wishes to Coach Julie Collison and the volleyball team!

This week’s Senior Spotlight shines on two very different people—Josh Meyer and Josh Harp. Josh Meyer is a Whittemore native who is active in football, basketball, and golf. His favorite class is peer helper, and when he’s away from school, Josh says he likes to party. Next year he plans to study landscaping at college.

Josh Harp is probably best known as the lead singer for “Everything Red”, a band made up of Garrigan students that you might have seen playing as part of the RAGBRAI festivities last summer. When he’s not making music, he says his favorite class is math. Josh lives in rural Algona, and in college he plans to major in architecture. We wish both Josh Harp and Josh Meyer all the best in the future.

On this week’s Golden Bear calendar, there’s a cheerleading stunt camp today from 9 to 4. Also this morning the volleyball team is playing at Emmetsburg.

Monday there’s more volleyball. The girls will be at home as they take on Clear Lake. Also on Monday the JV football squad travels to West Bend/Mallard.

Tuesday afternoon we’ll have a reconciliation service here at Garrigan. That night the committee meets to plan Gala 2000. Then on Wednesday the cross-country team runs at Clear Lake.

Also Wednesday night the volleyball team plays at Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Then it’s time for a long weekend, with no school Thursday thanks to the calendar drive and no school Friday because of a teacher’s conference in Carroll.

Friday night the football team plays at Manson/Northwest Webster. Then next Saturday the JV volleyball girls will play at Algona High.

That’s the “Bear Facts” for another week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to set your dial here next Saturday, when we’ll bring you more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
