The Bear Facts
January 12, 2008

Good morning! I'm Melanie Myers!

And I'm Melissa Cruise! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts". Happy New Year from everyone here at Bishop Garrigan High School.

The big news this week comes from quiz bowl. The quiz bowl team has been doing well all year, but this past weekend they had their best tournament ever. Forty-five teams competed at the Cougar Invitational at North Kossuth last Saturday, five of which represented Bishop Garrigan. After the preliminary rounds, four of Garrigan's five teams were among the top five teams overall that made play-offs. The play-off teams were divided into two divisions, and the Bears ended up winning both divisions.

The team of Ethan Dahlhauser, Shane Koob, Brittany Berte, and Rebeccah Erdman was seeded fifth after the preliminary rounds, with a perfect 8 - 0 record. They defeated West Bend Mallard, Boone, and Sioux Central in play-offs and ended up taking the overall championship. Joe Straub, Brent Kajewski, Lee Brashear, and Christopher Schmidt won the "blue division", which included the 9th through 16th seeds in the tournament. Their play-off victories were over Ankeny, Northeast Hamilton, and North Kossuth.

Two other Garrigan teams also made play-offs. Anna Kollasch, Michael Fakler, Jake Rosenmeyer, and Alex Hamilton also had a perfect record in preliminary games, and they were the #3 seed going into play-offs. They lost to Sioux Central in the quarterfinals. Mark Poeppe, Jacob Zittritsch, and Vince Cruise were seeded #12 after the morning rounds and lost in play-offs to North Kossuth. The team of Melissa Cruise, Ashley Beisch, Mike Hellman, and Nora Krahenbuhl just missed making play-offs, after losing to the championship team.

The victory qualifies the quiz bowl team to make their ninth trip to the National Academic Championships, and while it's not definite, it looks pretty likely that the team will be going to nationals. The tournament would be this June in Chicago. Before then there's still more quiz bowl action in the regular season. Today Ethan Dahlhauser, Shane Koob, Mark Poeppe, Joe Straub, Lee Brashear, Brent Kajewski, Vince Cruise, and Jake Rosenmeyer are over in Parkersburg for the Falcon Invitational. After this weekend there's a bit of a break until the Boone Invitational in March.

Also this weekend the math team is in action. Sixteen Golden Bears are down in Iowa Falls today for the Iowa Falls-Alden Great Plains Math League Competition. Competing today are seniors Sheri Kenyon, Krissy Kohlhaas, and Melanie Myers; and juniors Alec Boeckholt, Danielle Rahm, Ben Hellman, and Christopher Schmidt. Other math team members are sophomores Cassie Resiing, Luke McCall, Kelly Klein, Katrina Even, Rebeccah Erdman, Brittany Berte, and D.J. Beletti; and freshmen Alex Hamilton and Anna Kollasch. Good luck to the Golden Bear math team!

Intramural basketball is about to begin. There are five teams registered for intramurals this year, and the fun begins tomorrow. Most people say the team to beat this year will be the seniors: Nick Berte, Jake Grein, Kent Recker, Peyton Schindler, Chris Gelhaus, Ben Golwitzer, and Mike Garman. Shane Koob is on the injured reserve list for that team, and they list their team coaches at "Coach K" (Colby Krieps), "Coach D" (A.J. Doughan), and "Coach E" (Andrew Elbert). Another of the top teams is captained by David Miller and includes Chris Kellner, Dan Thilges, Brian Funk, Kyle Smith, Jack Bradley, Ethan Gisch, and Brad Richter.

The third intramural team combines juniors and seniors. It features Ben Hellman, Jake Lane, Jacob Zittritsch, Chris Lanus, Vinnie Humble, Randy Kenyon, Sam Norland, and Alec Boeckholt. The fourth team features Mike Mergen, Joe Golwitzer, Bryan Berte, D.J. Beletti, Nick Foertsch, Mark Peoppe, D.J. Thompson, Elijah Gelhaus, and Dylan Kollasch. The final team includes freshmen Jake Rosenmeyer, Tyler Lallier, Travis Cruise, Alex Hamilton, and Eric Baumann, together with junior Vince Cruise. Action starts tomorrow at 12:30pm and continues Sunday afternoons through March.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Melissa Cruise. Here to tell you about her is Sheri Kenyon.
