Good morning! I'm Nicole Elbert!
And I'm Andrea Schiltz! You're listening to the "Bear
Facts", where every week we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
This has been a great week for Golden Bear sports. Last Tuesday the Golden Bear
cross-country team had a record-breaking day at the Eagle Grove invitational. The boys set a new team record for best score, with 96 total points. The Bears finished second overall in the varsity boys race, and they had four medallists. Jeff Hellman took third place in 16 minutes, 53 seconds, and John Kohlhaas was 12th overall in 17:53.
Brandon Rowley set a new freshman record by finishing the five-kilometer course in 17:53, to finish 21st overall. It tells you something that the record he broke belonged jointly to Matt Studer and to Garrigan cross-country legend Adam Sundall. Matt Courtney medalled in 23rd place; and Seth Rogers, Eric Cassmann, and Tyler Rolling all had their best times of the year.
On the girls side Rose Mayer medalled by finishing the 3-kilometer girls race in 17 minutes, 54 seconds, which was good for 20th place. Nettie McGuire and Alison Brandenburg just missed medalling; and Molly Black, Bridget Doughan, and Alicia Shackelford also ran good races. Both the boys and girls will run in the North Central Conference meet next Tuesday at Clear Lake. They will finish their season next Friday at Spencer, and then the following Thursday they'll be back in Eagle Grove for districts. Good luck, cross-country!
The volleyball and
football teams also had a good week. The volleyball team had two victories on the week-bringing home a win from Eagle Grove on Monday and then beating Humboldt at home on Wednesday. Also, last Friday the varsity football team got their first win on the road-a big victory over North Iowa at Buffalo Center. The freshman and JV football and volleyball teams also had big wins this past week-making a sweep for Golden Bear sports. The volleyball team plays in the CYO tournament tomorrow, and then they'll be home against Webster City on Monday. Next Friday the football Bears will be back at Conway Field to host Britt West Hancock. We wish good luck to them!
This was also a great week for the Solid Gold Marching Band. Last weekend they won their division in the field competition at Algona Band Day. The band is down in Fort Dodge this morning for the state marching band competition, and we wish director Dennis Freking and all the band good luck today.
On and off this fall we've had to make special parking arrangements, because Garrigan has been the site for a number of area funerals. That's because St. Cecelia's Church is undergoing major renovations, which will eventually lead to a newly-decorated air-conditioned sanctuary. During the renovations, the church is holding their regular masses in the Rochleau Center at Seton, but large funerals won't fit there, so they are being held in the Garrigan gym. To accommodate the funerals, students have been parking near the baseball and football fields and on area streets, so that the mourners can use the school parking lot. So far reaction from the parish has been mostly good, but we'll all be glad when the renovations are over.
Last Wednesday eight Garrigan students went to Webster City to attend a leadership workshop sponsored by the North Central Conference. Freshmen Melissa Hilbert, Jude Studer, Alison Brandenburg, and Ashley Waller joined senior Zac Lickteig, junior Molly Black, and sophomore Derek Tindall for the event. They heard a motivational speaker and learned how understanding people's personalities can help them to be more effective leaders.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Keshar Nadkarni and Jeff Hellman. Here to tell you about them is
Jill Johnson.
Keshar Nadkarni is an Algona native of South Asian ancestry. She is a cheerleading captain, who has won all-state honors in speech and gone to state in choir. Keshar is also active in drama, flag corps, and here on the "Bear Facts". When she's not at Garrigan, you might see her working at the Dairy Queen in Algona. Next year she plans to attend UNI, and we wish her all the best.
Jeff Hellman comes to Garrigan from the Burt area. He has run in the state track and cross-country meets and is also part of the varsity basketball team. Jeff has won honors in band, choir, and speech, and he made the regional finals in math competition. On weekends you might hear him announcing here on KLGA. He plans to major in communications next fall at the University of Iowa. Good luck to both Jeff and Keshar!
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's state marching band competition this morning in Fort Dodge. Then tomorrow the volleyball team plays in the CYO tournament at LeMars
Gehlen.
Monday there's freshman and sophomore football at Eagle Grove, and the volleyball team celebrates Senior Night by hosting Webster City. Then on Tuesday the cross-country team runs in the district meet at Clear Lake.
Wednesday night we'll have freshman speech try-outs. Then Friday the cross-country team runs at Spencer and the varsity football team hosts Britt West Hancock. The baseball and softball teams will serve a chili supper before the game.
That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in again next time to hear more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
