Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
It's Gala time again-time for the biggest social event for adults in Kossuth County and the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Bishop Garrigan schools. This is the thirteenth year of Gala, and it's hard to imagine how the school system brought in enough money to operate before the dinner and auction was started. The income from Gala varies from year to year, but it's always in five figures. Part of the money goes to endowment, part to special projects at both Garrigan and Seton, and part to the general operating expenses of the schools. Literally hundreds of workers help with Gala each year, and we hope that again this year their efforts will lead to a successful event.
This year's Gala theme is "Sea to Shining Sea", celebrating the unity that these troubled times have brought to America. The 330 guests will marvel at the red, white, and blue decorations while they enjoy a seven-course meal. After munching on hors d'oeuvres platters, they'll dine on cream of sugar snap pea soup, followed by salad Elaine. The main course is roasted tenderloin of black angus in port wine sauce, with red jacket mashed potatoes on the side. There's also steamed asparagus and assorted rolls with butter. The dessert will continue the patriotic theme. Guests will savor "celebration firecrackers" topped with crème anglaise
and drizzled with raspberry marmalade. They'll then top off the evening by sipping from chocolate cups filled with gourmet coffee and liqueurs.
As usual, Garrigan students will be serving all that sumptuous food. This year thirty-nine students are working as waiters and waitresses, while seventeen others help out behind the scenes. This year's waitresses include seniors Ashley Arndorfer, Monica Studer, Bridget Buscherfeld, Allison Courtney, Ashley Schiltz, Jamie Roethler, and Alison Dornbier; as well as Heather Fickbohm, Jill Goodman, Emily O'Kane, Brianna Miller, Stephanie Hilbert, and Jamie Loebig. Juniors working as waitresses are Autumn Thompson, Andrea Schiltz, Janel Richter, Amy Rahm, Keshar Nadkarni, Jenna Hansen, Kim Frideres, Rachel Foth, Nicole Elbert, and Molly Bartolo, Sophomore Brooke Myers will also be a waitress.
On the boys' side, the waiters include seniors Brian Welp, Bob Brandenburg, Tony Detrick, Luke DeWaard, Mark Rasmussen, Scot Miller, Andy Meyer, Mark Meister, and Matt Golwitzer; juniors Joe Hellman, Zac Lickteig, and Alex Vaske; and sophomores Ben Geelan, David Rasmussen, and Nick Golwitzer. You'll also see Nolan Thilges, Josh Broesder, Kyle Wieland, Steve Goede, Zac McGuire, and Mason Elbert working as parking valets; Holly and Heather Forburger selling chances on the key club; sound technicians Eric Fouarge, Eric Cassman, and Grant Vaske; and videotape photographer Debbie Kohlhaas. Last weekend Garrigan's music students competed at the state solo and ensemble contest in Garner. Garrigan earned four Division I ratings at state contest. Three were for solos by Steven Kellner, Jeff Hellman, and Rebecca McGuire; and the fourth was for the madrigal ensemble. That group was made up of Jesse Bode, Andrew Reising, Eric Cassman, John Kohlhaas, Amber Golwitzer, Jennifer Erpelding, Keshar Nadkarni, Janel Richter, Rebecca McGuire, and Mandy Rahm; together with Rachel McGuire, Jenna Kollasch, Steven Kellner, Jeff Hellman, Jacob Richter, and Chris Buscher. Congratulations to them and to choir director Linda Mertz.
Last weekend we held the intramural basketball championship. The championship was by far the closest game of the season-a close, hard-fought effort that ended up going into overtime. In the end the top seed, Ben Meyer's team, defeated Scot Miller's team by a score of 43 to 39. Congratulations to Ben and his teammates Tyler Erpelding, Brian Welp, Steve Goede, Tyler Trenary, and Nick Lane.
The 2002 BGHS football cheerleading squad was recently announced. Next year's varsity cheerleaders will be Lindsey Eischen, Rachel Foth, Kim Frideres, and Nikki Loebig; as well as Brooke Myers, Keshar Nadkarni, Cassie Recker, Autumn Thompson, and Melissa Vaske. Cheering at JV games you'll see Samantha Arndorfer, Katelyn Besch, Amanda Fox, Kathy Kohlhaas, and Liz Mayer. Rounding out the JV cheerleaders are Courtney Mergen, Jennifer Mergen, Jill Patterson, Monica Vaske, and Amanda Thompson. Congratulations, everybody!
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Jason Walker. Jason is a fun-loving guy who's probably best known for his accomplishments on the golf course. He's been part of the Golden Bear golf team ever since he was a freshman. Jason has also been out for cross-country all four years in high school, and in the past he was active in intramurals. Jason plans to attend college next year, and we wish him good luck.
Thanks, Andrea! On our Golden Bear calendar today, there's the state mathematics competition at UNI in Cedar Falls. We're hoping that again this year Garrigan advances from state to the Great Plains regional competition.
Also today the boys' golf team is hosting the BGHS Invitational. Then tonight it's time to celebrate
America--"From Sea to Shining Sea", as Garrigan hosts Gala 2002.
Tomorrow there's the CYO track meet in Sioux City. Also tomorrow the HOSA group will be holding a breakfast at the Rochleau Center to raise money for their trip to the national health competition in Anaheim this summer.
Monday the golf teams play Eagle Grove. Tuesday there's an art field trip to Armstrong, and the peer helper class will tour the Rockwell City prison. That night the girls track team runs at Garner.
Wednesday the quiz bowl team will participate in the spring Knowledge Master Open. The girl's track team runs at Armstrong that night, and the golf teams take on Humboldt.
Next Thursday and Friday there's Model UN in Cedar Falls. Also on Friday there's boys track at Pocahontas and girls track at Estherville. Then next Saturday it's time for Prom night, 2002.
Finally this week, we'd like to offer our sympathy to Garrigan math teacher Daryl Kohlhaas on the loss of his mother. Mrs. Kohlhaas was also the grandmother or aunt of numerous students in the Garrigan system, and we offer our condolences to all of them.
