And I'm Melanie McGuire! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts," the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
The biggest event on today's activity calendar is probably sectional wrestling. Garrigan senior Phil Kramer, the one-man Golden Bear wrestling team, will be in Pocahontas this afternoon for the Class 1-A sectionals. Phil will be grouped with wrestlers from Twin River Valley, Southeast Webster, St. Ed's, Graettinger, Manson Northwest Webster, Laurens, Pocahontas, and Sioux Central. The tournament starts promptly at noon, and the winners will advance to the district tournament next weekend. We'll let you know how Phil's matches came out on next week's show.
Basketball play-offs are here, and this year all the action will be right here in the Garrigan gym. Garrigan is hosting the first round of both the girls' and boys' district tournaments. Girls' district action starts next Monday, February 15, when the Bears take on Belmond-Klemme at home in Friedmann Auditorium. If they win on Wednesday, their next game will be on Saturday the 20th, against either Britt West Hancock or Garner Hayfield.
This year has been kind of different for girls basketball at Garrigan. There are two new coaches, Dave Wieland and Joe Capesius, both of whom teach at Seton Grade School. The team is led by two senior players: Liz DeWaard and Abbey Studer. Junior point guard Angie Froehlich has also been one of the team's top players all season long. The team has had some big victories and some close losses against tough competition, and we know they'll bring it all together in play-offs.
Boys' districts are still one week off. The Bears will host Britt on Monday, February 22. If they make it past round one, they'll play again on Wednesday the 24th, versus either Emmetsburg or Pocahontas. Throughout the tough conference season the Bears have shown they can hold their own in close games, and we hope that facing all those big schools has gotten the Bears ready to take on schools their own size in play-offs.
At the core of the boys' team are seniors Andrew Brunsen, Matt Kunkel, Jason Kohlhaas, and Jeremy Bartolo. Junior John Mosbach and sophomore Brad Nelson have also been among the top scorers for this year's Golden Bear boys. The boys' coaching staff has also changed for '99. Gene Meister and John Bartolo are now co-coaches for the boys, and they're assisted by Principal Mike Stence. Good luck to both the boys and the girls as they enter district action.
It's quiz bowl time again. Thirteen Garrigan students got up very early this morning, and now they're on their way to Orange City for the MOC/Floyd Valley Invitational Tournament. Garrigan has three teams entered in today's competition. Team captains are seniors Adam Foertsch and Rachel Studer, and sophomore Lynn Kohlhaas. Joining them are senior Mark Anderson; juniors Wade MacDonald, Nate Frideres, and Dennis Gisch; sophomores Angie Kohlhaas, Ellie Reising, Justin Froehlich, and Paul Loebach; and freshmen Rebecca McGuire and Adam Rahm. Again this year Garrigan students are participating in a computerized compatibility match-up. Almost everyone had the chance to fill ut a thirty-question survey, and the forms were sent off to be compiled. In a week or so we'll all find out who we're the most and least compatable with. This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Nick Priester and Kristin Nemmers. Here to tell you about them is Doug Besch.
If you're sitting in class with Nick Priester, you just might hear a beeper go off and see Nick leave the room. That's because Nick is studying to be an emergency medical technician. He's taking the EMT-B class through North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, and when the beeper goes off, he needs to go and help out on the ambulance. Nick plans a career in the health field. Good luck, Nick!
Kristin Nemmers enjoys classes like Accounting, Personal Bookkeeping, and Choir, but she gets less excited about Math, English, Religion, and History. She says that when she's away from school she likes to "laze around and watch TV". Kristin takes publications photos. She'll be off to college next year, and we wish her all the best.
Thanks, Doug! On this week's Golden Bear calendar, the quiz bowl team is competing today at MOC/Floyd Valley in Orange City. Then this afternoon Phil Kramer will wrestle for the sectional title.
Tomorrow intramurals resume. We'll have four straight games in the Garrigan gym, beginnng at 12:45. Then Monday afternoon we'll have parent/teacher conferences from 3:30 to 6:30 at the Rochleau Center at Seton.
Right after conferences, be sure to head over to the Garrigan gym for the first round of girls' district basketball. The girls will be the home team on the scoreboard, as they host Belmond-Klemme.
Tuesday the boys finish their regular season at Hampton-Dumont. Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, and we'll have a special prayer service here at Garrigan at 10:45am. That afternoon parent/teacher conferences continue.
Thursday we'll have a jeans day to support senior Melissa McGuire as she recovers from her paralyzing accident last fall. Then on Friday there's no school, in exchange for the conferences earlier in the week.
