Good morning! I'm Sarah Schmitt!
And I'm Jeff Hellman! You're listening to the "Bear
Facts"-the radio show where each week we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
Of all the activities at Garrigan, one of the longest seasons belongs to the quiz bowl team. They started their season shortly after football started last fall, and they'll still be going when it's track season in the spring. Today the quiz bowl team got up early to head down to Eagle Grove, where they have another big tournament. Garrigan has three teams competing today. One of those teams could be nicknamed "Team Kohlhaas"-because it's made up of a group of very intelligent cousins: Angie Kohlhaas, Lynn Kohlhaas, Chris Kohlhaas, and John Kohlhaas.
Another of Garrigan's entries features captain Josh Richter, together with Ellie Reising, Autumn Thompson, and Jeff Hellman. The final Golden Bear team is captained by Mandy Rahm. Her teammates include David Murphy, Amber Golwitzer, and Tyler Rolling. Good luck today to Coach David Burrow and the whole quiz bowl team.
The Golden Bear basketball teams have been doing well all season long. This past week both the boys and girls got big victories over Humboldt. Although they're often overlooked, some of the most important people on the basketball team are the managers and statisticians-who keep everything organized for the team. The basketball managers this season are seniors Dan Besch, Kevin Kohlhaas, and Jake Rahm. Sitting at the scoring table, keeping track of stats you'll fiind seniors Andrea Kramer and Tanya Broesder, as well as junior Kyle Wieland. At the lower levels sophomore Adam Gisch, and freshmen Elizabeth Bormann and Lisa Kohlhaas also help with stats, and Elizabeth and fellow freshman Lisa Kohlhaas make videotape for the boys' games. We're glad to salute all these people who help out with the basketball program.
Among of the big features of any basketball game are the halftime performances by the award-winning Golden Bear danz squad. Heather Johnson and Kelly Kunkel are the senior leaders of this year's squad. Joining them are juniors Allison Courtney, Stephanie Hilbert, Jamie Roethler, Laura Seeley, and Monica Studer. Sophomores Lindsey Eischen, Jenni Erpelding, Rachel Foth, Kim Frideres, Nikki Loebig, Sarah Schmitt, and Amanda Wolf are the largest group in danz squad. Rounding out the team are freshmen Maria Erpelding and Nicole Krieps.
Because of the bad weather in December, the lower-level basketball teams haven't gotten in a lot of games this year, but they've had pretty good seasons overall. This year's JV girls' squad features juniors Mindy Buscher, Alison Dornbier, Heather Fickbohm, Amanda Gisch, and Teresa McGuire. The sophomores playing JV are Molly Bartolo, Nicole Elbert, Nellie Fowler, and Janel Richter. The team also includes four freshmen: Molly Black, Jenna Kollasch, Nettie McGuire, and Michaela Mescher. Good luck to Coach John Byrkeland and all the JV girls.
On the boys' side, the JV team includes senior exchange student Oliver Hoffman, as well as juniors Joe Bartolo and Jeff Vaske. The sophomores on the boys' JV team are Jeff Hellman, Joe Hellman, Mark Kohlhaas, and Alex Vaske; and freshmen Adam Arndorfer, Aaron O'Kane, and Scott Stence round out the team. Rob Meister coaches the JV boys at Garrigan.
The freshman basketball teams are also important. In addition to the girls that suit JV, the freshmen squad includes Lindsay Becker, Ashley Berte, Sarah Meyer, Ashley McGuire, Sierra Rahe, and Lisa Thilges. The boys' freshman team includes Tim Arndorfer, Miles Berte, Jesse Bode, Eric Cassman, A.J. Cink, and Mason Elbert; as well as Ben Geelan, Brent Schillington, and Grant Smith. Nick Golwitzer, Ben Long, and Jimmy Syharath are the freshman managers; and Mike Stence and Joe Elbert coach the freshman basketball teams.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Julie McGuire and Bryan McAlpine. Here with the details is Steven Kellner.
Julie McGuire finished up her school work this past week and is leaving Garrigan at semester. Over the years her activities have included softball, volleyball, band, choir, and speech. For two years now she's been an employee of the Algona Good Samaritan Center. We wish Julie all the best in the future.
You've probably seen Bryan McAlpine's helpful smile in the aisles of the Algona Hy-Vee store, where this Whittemore native has worked since he was a freshman. Bryan is an honor student who enjoys intramural basketball. In the past he was successful in band and track. He'll be off to college next year, and we wish Bryan the very best of luck.
Thanks, Steve! On our Golden Bear calendar, today there's quiz bowl at Eagle Grove. Then tonight Garrigan will host a professional wrestling event in memory of Sean
Beisch.
Tomorrow intramural basketball continues. Then on Monday the freshman basketball teams play at Emmetsburg. Tuesday there's diocesan honor band in Storm Lake.
Tuesday night the varsity Bears host Pocahontas. Then Wednesday there's freshman basketball at Humboldt and JV basketball, with the Bears taking on West Bend/Mallard.
Also next Wednesday we'll have a financial aid meeting for senior parents, which was rescheduled after the storms in December. Then on Thursday the senior class will have a jeans day as their reward from the magazine drive last fall.
Next Friday the Bears will travel for a four-game basketball match-up at Clarion, and finally next Saturday there's district large group speech at Fort Dodge.
That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for tuning in, an be sure to join us again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
