"The Bear Facts"

DECEMBER 14, 2002

Good morning! I'm Jenna Hansen!

I'm Sarah Erdman!

I'm Lisa Even!

And I'm Matt Studer! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

The Golden Bear danz squad made an awesome showing last weekend when they took part in the state dance and drill competition in Des Moines. The girls took home five different trophies, including two of the top honors for the day. Garrigan's presentation "On Broadway" took first place in the dance/funk/jazz division, while "I Know You're Gonna Like This" took second place in the pom division. The dance squad overall earned a Division I rating.

Garrigan also won a special community service award. Throughout the year the girls have performed service projects for the Algona YMCA, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Daughters of America. They also participated in a cancer walk last fall. The team was also honored with an award for distinguished academic achievement, based on the high grade point averages of Garrigan's dancers. They even took the best sportsmanship award for their division. Overall they took home as many awards as they possibly could have received.

Danz squad members include seniors Lindsey Eischen, Rachel Foth, Amanda Wolf, Sarah Schmitt, Kim Frideres, and Nikki Loebig; juniors Maria Erpelding and Nicole Krieps; sophomore Ashley Shaw; and freshmen Jessica Cink, April Wolf, Jennifer Vaske, Monica Schiltz, Lizzie Mayer, Melissa Hilbert, and Michaela Pease. Congratulations to all of them and to coach Colleen Conway-Schiltz.

Also last weekend the Golden Bear quiz bowl team had another great tournament. They made the final four out of twenty-two teams entered in the Spirit Lake Invitational. Garrigan was seeded fourth overall after the preliminary rounds and lost to Unity Christian of Orange City in the semi-finals. John Kohlhaas was captain for the Bears. His teammates were Nick Dahlhauser, Steven Kellner, Autumn Thompson, Tyler Rolling, and Amber Golwitzer.

This morning Garrigan is hosting a Great Plains Math League competition. Schools from around western Iowa will be competing here at Garrigan. The Bears' math team competitors include freshmen Noah Devine, Kandice Roethler, Spencer Rahm, Gavin Freking, Ana Maria Pal, and Joe Rahm; as well as sophomores Matt Courtney, Samantha Kirsch, and Anthony McGuire. Juniors on math team are Scott Stence, Josh Broesder, Eric Cassmann, and John Kohlhaas. They all join seniors Jeff Hellman, Steven Kellner, Rosalind Kirsch, and David Murphy. Good luck to Coach Daryl Kohlhaas and the math team!

Tomorrow will be the ninth madrigal at Garrigan. The fine arts department will present both brunch and dinner performances. Steven Kellner is king at this year's madrigal, while Keshar Nadkarni is queen. Other royal court members include seniors Jenni Erpelding, Jeff Hellman, and Janel Richter; juniors Rachel McGuire, Jenna Kollasch, John Kohlhaas, Amber Golwitzer, Jesse Bode, and Lindsay Becker; sophomores Rose Mayer and Jacob Richter; and freshmen Jacob Hellman, Brad Thompson, and Chris Kirsch.

The madrigal also features eleven students in an acting ensemble. Seniors Rachel Foth, Rosalind Kirsch, David Murphy, Sarah Schmitt, and Autumn Thompson head up the group. Other actors include juniors Josh Broesder and Eric Cassman, sophomores Chris Buscher and Amanda Thompson, and freshmen Seth Rogers and Brandon Rowley. Best wishes to everyone involved in madrigal!

This week's Senior Spotlight shines on John Stetzel and Adam Thilges. Here to tell you about them is Joe Hellman.

John Stetzel has been active on the tech crews for drama and music shows at Garrigan all through his high school years. He enjoys competing in quiz bowl, and in the past he was on the baseball team. John likes health and technology classes. Among his accomplishments is authoring a webpage on gaming. After high school he'll be going to college, and we wish him all the best.

Adam Thilges enjoys taking computer-oriented courses. His biggest activities over the years have been golf and intramural basketball, and he was also involved in choir. Adam will also be off to college next year. Good luck to both Adam and John!

Thanks, Joe! On our Golden Bear calendar this morning there's the Great Plains math competition at Garrigan. Then tonight the faculty will have their holiday party.

Tomorrow is the third Sunday of Advent. We'll have the madrigal brunch and dinner here at Garrigan. Then Monday morning we'll have an Advent prayer service.

Monday night the freshman and JV basketball teams play Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. Then on Tuesday the varsity teams will host Clear Lake. There will be a taco supper at the games, sponsored by the golf team.

Wednesday night there's a band concert and art show. On Friday we'll have a Christmas prayer service. Then we dismiss at 2:15 for Christmas vacation. That night the basketball team takes on Algona High-with the JV games across town and the varsity here at Garrigan.

Finally this week, if you come to the basketball games here at Garrigan you can't help but notice the beautiful new mats on the walls of the gym. An anonymous donor contributed the mats, and they're a nice addition to the school.

That's the "Bear Facts" for this week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to catch us next week for a special holiday show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
