THE BEAR FACTS
January 14, 2023
Good morning! I’m Violet Bode!
I’m Ella Schaaf!
And I’m Brendan Plathe! Thanks for tuning in again to the “Bear Facts”,
the weekly radio show where we bring you the news from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
If you go to a Golden Bear basketball game, there’s a lot more than just
basketball to keep you entertained. Something else you can see at almost every
basketball game is our state champion danz squad. The girls finished in first
place in both the pom and kick categories at state last month, but their season
is far from over. They’ll be working on friends and co-ed routines, as well as
perfecting dances they learned at camp last summer.
The danz squad this year is very heavy on juniors and seniors. The group
includes Eva Snyder, Emma Bacha, Avery Berte, Zoey Von Bank, and Ava Kemna; plus
Ellie Rosenmeyer, Violet Bode, Kyra Deike, Ella Schaaf, and Rosanne Curtis—Ricke.
Best wishes through the rest of the winter to the danz squad.
The cheerleaders are also a big part of our winter sports. There are nine
girls on this year’s winter sports spirit squad. The basketball cheerleaders
include Emma Bacha, Avery Berte, and Zoey Von Bank; plus Blaire Becker, Allison
Denker, Addison Kuper, Sophie Meraz, Hailee Reutzel, and Rosanne Curtis—Ricke.
Thanks to the cheerleaders for all their hard work.
In addition to the varsity basketball players you hear a lot about, both
the boys and girls have JV teams, and there’s also a JJV team on the boys side.
The lower-level Bears have been having an awesome season, beating almost all
their conference rivals. Every player on the girls JV team has also gotten
varsity playing time. They include juniors Reagan Murphy and Alaina Casey; plus
freshmen Alyssa Haugland, Sacha Allesch, Reece Kemna, Emmi Bartolo, Ava Snider,
Ava Roethler, and Hailey Nemmers.
The JV boys team features juniors Drew Lappe, Justin Bauer, Logan Nemmers,
and Ben Greteman. Sophomores suiting JV are Daniel Meis, Drew Muller, Trayton
Cink, and Nick Leerar; while Brady Galligan, Schyler Morse, and Isaac DeLange
play JJV. Freshmen on the lower level teams include Tate Foertsch, Carter
Schwab, Keegan Berte, Amaury Thomas, and Gabe Swift. Good luck in the rest of
the season to all the JV and JJV teams.
Large group speech is just around the corner. District contest will be a
week from today over in Spencer. This year the Bears will be competing with the
one-act play The Great Pandemonium, a readers theatre called A Guide to the
Teenage Zone, a musical theatre from Cinderella, and three improvisation groups.
Students participating in group speech include Garrett Heying, Griffin
Geving, Isaac DeLange, Eva Snyder, Sam Plathe, Thadd Kollasch, and Avery Berte;
as well as Ella Schaaf, Brendan Plathe, Tate Foertsch, Ethan Marso, and Ava
Roethler. Others in speech are Ava Hough, Lauren Swift, Molly Peterson, Haley
Nemmers, Gavin Swift, and Brooke Ludwig; plus Savannah Waechter, Violet Bode,
Audi Crooks, Scott Bormann, Benjy Trainer, Sacha Alesch, Isabella Waechter, and
Aubrey Meyer. Best wishes, group speech!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Connor Davis. Here to tell you
about him is Abbie Capesius.
Connor Davis has a lot to do with recording what’s going on at Garrigan.
He’s on the publications staff for this year’s yearbook, and he also helps keep
things up to date on the student website, bggoldenbears.org. Connor enjoys art,
and he was also a football manager. In the past he also played football and was
on the track team. We wish Connor all the best after graduation.
Thanks, Abbie! On our Golden Bear calendar today there’s wrestling at
South Hardin, and there’s also a junior high honor band in Ft. Dodge. Tomorrow
will be the first round of the Knights of Columbus free throw contest.
Monday the second semester begins. There’s JJV basketball at Lake Mills
that night, and also a JV wrestling meet at Emmetsburg.
The high school will have mass at St John’s in Bancroft next Tuesday
morning. Tuesday night Garrigan will host a basketball quad with Lake Mills. The
danz squad will serve a fundraiser supper at the games.
There’s a meeting for planning Gala next Wednesday night. Thursday the
school board meets, and that night the Bears will host Forest City for
basketball, in games that were postponed from before Christmas.
Friday report cards will be e-mailed to parents. There’s basketball at
Eagle Grove Friday night, and then next Saturday there’s district large group
speech over in Spencer.
That’s the “Bear Facts” for another week. Thanks for joining us, and be
sure to catch the show again next week to hear more news from Bishop Garrigan
High School.
