And I’m Dorothy Kirsch! You’re listening to the “Bear Facts”, the radio show where each week we keep you updated on all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Two weeks ago Garrigan hosted the district individual speech contest. We had unprecedented results, with all thirteen of the speeches we entered receiving division one ratings. Today all those speeches will be competing at the state speech contest. Right now nine BGHS students are on their way to Sibley, where they’ll be performing throughout the day.
Dorothy Kirsch will begin the day for the Bears. She’s performing a prose selection called “Lamentations of a Teenager”. Later in the day she’ll sing “I Cain’t Say No”. Also in Solo Musical Theatre Mark Fakler is presenting “Run Freedom, Run” and Levi Capesius will perform “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General”. Levi will also present the acting scene “The Driving Instructor”, and Mark will compete in Improvisation.
Hannah Bernhard will present “Ludicrus Laws” in Expository Address and “Street Directions” in Prose. Nick Kayser is presenting the Prose piece “Girls”, while Mariana Pacheco will share an Expository Address on ballet. In Literary Program Noah Buscher will present “Creation”. There are also two Storytelling entries: Morgan Frideres with “Bad Driving, Amelia Bedelia” and Emily Riesnberg with “Gilbert, the Surfer Dude”. Three other Garrigan students are also competing today. Kaitlyn Fogarty, Taylor Illg, and Ben Fogarty made the long trip over to Dubuque to be part of a Great Plains Math League contest at Loras College. Today is an appropriate day for a math team competition, because it’s “Pi Day”, and with the year, the number for the date is 3 – 1 – 4 – 1 – 5. Coach Daryl Kohlhaas says that at 9:26am, his daughter, who is hosting the contest, will have a special celebration for the competitors. We wish good luck to the Garrigan math team!
There was good news recently for Garrigan junior Mariah Bronk. She was named the statewide winner in the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest. Mariah’s essay on “The Importance of Religious Freedom” was judged superior to those submitted by students from all over the state. She’s the first statewide winner from Garrigan in the KC Essay Contest. Congratulations, Mariah!
Next Friday the Golden Bear quiz bowl team will be hosting their fifth annual community quiz bowl tournament. Teams of any size from anywhere in the area are welcome. Most of the competitors are usually adults, but anyone from middle school on up is welcome to compete. Next Wednesday a large group of Garrigan students will head up to the Twin Cities. Their destination is the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre in the southwest suburbs. They’ll take a behind-the-scenes tour of the theatre and then enjoy a meal while watching a stage production of Mary Poppins. Much of the cost is subsidized by DARTS, the organization that supports all kinds of fine arts activities at Garrigan.
Also next Wednesday Garrigan’s sophomores will be touring area businesses. This is part of a career education program that shows the students what different jobs are like. Guidance Counselor John Byrkeland organizes the trips, and we thank all the area businesses who participate in the program.
Tomorrow we’ll have the intramural basketball championship. The championship game will pit a team of seniors—including Landen Studer, Cameron Langerman, Devin Degen, Cady Steinman, Steve McCall, and Andrew Lallier—against a group od seniors. Two of the seniors’ top players (Carter Hall and Nick Kayser) are injured, but the others—Mark Fakler, Emily Riesenberg, Morgan Frideres, Tony Kollasch, Taylor Frideres, Kaitlyn Fogarty, and Taylor Illg—will be working hard to get an upset. We’ll let you know how things came out on next week’s show.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Taylor Detrick. Here to tell you about him is Kaitlyn Fogarty.
It’s an appropriate time of year to salute Taylor Detrick, because last week was the Garrigan Pops Concert. Taylor’s biggest activity by far is choir, which has kept him busy ever since he was a freshman. In school Taylor enjoys science classes like Ecology, and he’d like to work in that field after he graduates. We wish Taylor the very best of luck in the future.
Thanks, Kaitlyn! On our Golden Bear calendar there’s the state speech contest today in Sibley. Also today the math team competes at Loras College in Dubuque. Then tonight the Wartburg Ritterchor men’s choir performs at St. Cecelia’s. That group features Garrigan graduate Jake Hamilton.
Tomorrow afternoon we’ll have the intramural basketball championship. The big game will be at 2:00 in the Garrigan gym. Then Monday and Tuesday we’ll have parent—teacher conferences at the Rochleau Center.
Wednesday a group will see Mary Poppins at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. Also that day sophomores will tour area businesses.
Next Friday there will be no school at Garigan or Seton. That night is the community quiz bowl tournament. Finally next Saturday members of the quiz bowl team will compete in the regional history bowl at Waukee.
