And I'm Jeff Hellman! Welcome once again to the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
The season is underway for the JV and freshman fall sports teams at Garrigan. Last Tuesday at Estherville, Brandon Rowley won the freshman race at the ELCART cross-country meet, and Seth Rogers also medalled at the meet. Coaches Kohlhaas and Ahlers expect both runners to be competitive at the varsity level throughout the season. Three freshman girls are already running varsity for the Bears: Alicia Shackelford, Alison Brandenburg, and Bridget Doughan. Good luck to them throughout the season.
Also last Tuesday the ninth and tenth grade football team won its first game of the season—a big 19 to 6 victory over the North Kossuth Cougars. Sophomore Mark Parrish had five interceptions in the game, and freshman Jude Studer ran back an interception for a touchdown. The Golden Bear defense held North Kossuth scoreless, since the opponents’ only points came after a bad kick.
Among the other lower-level football players at Garrigan are Jace Boekelman, Jesse Studer, John Reding, Jacob Detrick, Noah Devine, Adam Elbert, and Gavin Freking. Other freshmen include Spencer Rahm, Matt Kollasch, Joe Rahm, Nate Pierson, Chad Meyer, and Tim Lind. Rounding out the freshman football team you’ll see Jeff Lappe, Jacob Hellman, Derek Lanus, Eric Goodman, Bobby Geelan, Dan Garman, and Ross Froehlich.
Sophomores out for football this year include Cole Vautier, Sean Kohlhaas, Sam Dittrich, Mitch Buscher, and Jim Garman, together with Kyle Frideres, Chris Reinhart, Andrew Berte, Brian Marso, Dan Gisch, Derek Tindall, and Matt Vitzthum. The next JV football game will be Monday against West Bend/Mallard, and we wish the Bears good luck.
The JV and freshman volleyball teams are also off to a good start.The JV team is 2 – 0, and they’re looking strong. Juniors Ashley McGuire, Maria Erpelding, Michaela Mescher, and Lindsay Becker are at the core of the team. Joining them are sophomores Lindsay Schiltz, Holly Lancaster, Emily DeWaard, Miranda Boekelman, and Nicole Reding. There are also sixteen freshmen out for volleyball this year. Amanda Steier is one of the freshman stand-outs. Others include include Andrea Arndorfer, April Wolf, Ashley Waller, Tara Trenary, Jessica Berte, Allison Even, and Sadie Foertsch. Rounding out the team are Amanda Shaw, Kelly Schmidt, Kandice Roethler, Kayla Reding, Denise Kohlhaas, Laura Kellner, Melissa Hilbert, and Hope Grein. Your time is almost up if you want to buy a 2002 – 2003 Garrigan calendar. The annual calendar drive ends next Monday, and so far sales have been going well. That’s in spite of the fact that there were printing problems with the calendar, which made some of the pictures hard to see. The development office apologizes for the printing quality, but they would like to remind everyone that the main feature of the calendar is a raffle that offers you the chance to win from $35 to $500 in cash prizes. You can also use your calendar to keep up-to-date with school events, so we encourage everyone to find their favorite Golden Bear and buy a Garrigan calendar today.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Rosalind Kirsch and Jenna Hansen. Here to tell you about them is Jeff.
Rosalind Kirsch is a Wesley native who is one of the best artists in the Class of 2003. For the past four years you’ve seen her work on posters, tickets, and programs for all types of school events at Garrigan. Rosalind also enjoys band, speech, drama, the math team, and announcing here on the “Bear Facts”. Away from school she’s the head cook at the Hillside Country Club near Wesley. Rosalind plans a college major that will make use of her art ability, and we wish her all the best in the future.
Jenna Hansen comes to Garrigan from Whittemore. She’s probably best known as a golfer, but she’s also active in speech and plays. Away from school you might see her working at the Ampride convenience store in Whittemore. Next year Jenna plans to attend Briar Cliff University, where she wants to major in business finance. Thanks, Jeff! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, this morning the cross-country team is running in the CYO meet at Holstein. Also today the volleyball team plays at Emmetsburg.
Tomorrow is the St. Joseph Parish Festival in Wesley. Then on Monday the JV football team plays West Bend/Mallard while the volleyball teams host Iowa Falls.
Wednesday night there’s cross country at Clear Lake and the volleyball teams play at Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. Then on Thursday we’ll have an early dismissal for teacher in-service. Finally next Friday the Bears host Manson/Northwest Webster.
Next Friday the varsity football team plays at Manson Northwest Webster. Then over the weekend we’ll be putting up decorations for Homecoming, 2002.
Finally this week we’d like to offer our condolences to janitor John Bartolo, to senior Molly Bartolo, and to the other Bartolos who are recent BGHS graduates. John’s sister, Rosalie Spaulding, passed away this week, and her funeral will be this morning. We want all the family to know they are in our thoughts and prayers.
