Good morning! I’m Erin Quinlin
I’m Taylor Hovey!
I’m Jake Hamilton!
And I’m Kara Eischen! Thanks
for tuning in to the “Bear Facts”, the radio show where each week we keep
you in touch with all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
The main event today is math competition.
Twelve members of the Golden Bear math team are down in Ames for a Great
Plains Math League tournament. Students
competing today include seniors Jake Hamilton and Brittany Kirsch; juniors Zach
Kollasch, Taylor Illg, Dorothy Kirsch, Tony Kollasch, and Kaitlyn Fogarty;
sophomores Devin Degen and Joseph Espinosa; and freshmen Danielle Plathe, Ben
Fogarty, and Josh Hamilton. They’ll
be working individually and as teams to solve challenging math problems.
The math team members were among several Garrigan students who got
practice in solving problems a week and a half ago when they took the AMC-12, an
extremely difficult exam that is given to the top math students all across the
country. Juniors Andrew Miller and
Kaitlyn Fogarty had Garrigan’s top score on the AMC-12 this year, while senior
Jake Hamilton was close behind. Others
who excelled on the test included Brittany Kirsch, Tony Kollasch, Dorothy
Kirsch, and Reece Wadle. Congratulations
to these math students.
Last Saturday fifteen Garrigan students competed at the Iowa High School
Speech Association state large group contest in Spencer, and every single one of
those students came home with at least one Division I rating.
Five of the Bears’ six speech groups earned Division I or
“Excellent” ratings—including two acting ensembles, a radio newscast, an
improv group, and a musical theatre presentation.
Congratulations to coaches Mary McCall and David Burrow and all the state
speech award winners.
With large-group speech over, we’re now getting ready for individual
speech season. This year’s
individual speech team includes senior Levi Bernhard; juniors Betty Straub,
Hannah Bernhard, Mark Fakler, Emily Riesenberg, Morgan Frideres, Taylor Illg,
Mariana Pacheco, Christian Matthews, and Dorothy Kirsch; and freshman Levi
Capesius. Garrigan will be hosting
district contest on Saturday, March 1. We’ll
give you more details as that date approaches.
February is National FFA Month. Seven
Garrigan students are part of the Algona FFA.
Morgan Muller and Vanessa Arndorfer have served as officers in the
organization, and they’ll be at Hy-Vee next Tuesday participating in the Farm
Bureau’s Shopping Cart Race to raise money for the Kossuth County Food Pantry.
Other FFA members from Garrigan include Brandon Berte, Grant Arndorfer,
Charles Berte, Lydia Reding, and Matt Lappe.
Last Saturday the Golden Bear volleyball team hosted their annual alumni tournament. The winning team called themselves the Big Bad Bears, and was made up of players from the Classes of 2002, 2012, and 2013. The tournament was a great success, and the team would like to thank everyone who participated. They brought in over $450, which will go to the cost of new uniforms
The Golden Bear danz squad has their annual clinic coming up soon. This year’s clinic is Thursday and Friday, February 27 and 28. Girls from all anywhere in the area are welcome, and the cost is just $20 for both days. Registration forms are available in the Garrigan office, or you can print one out online at bishopgarrigan.org
Don’t forget that it’s just a month until Bishop Garrigan’s fourth annual Community Quiz Bowl. The event is being organized to help pay expenses for the quiz bowl team to head to nationals this summer in New Orleans. Players can be from middle school age through adults, and everyone is welcome to participate. The Community Quiz Bowl is Friday, March 14, so be sure to organize your team soon. Information is available on the BGHS website, or you can contact Tony Kollasch for more information. You can reach him at 515–320–0101.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Sabrina Book. Here
to tell you about her is Brittany Kirsch.
Sabrina Book is a Whittemore native who is probably best known as a cheerleader. She’s been part of both the football and basketball spirit squads all through high school. When she’s not at school, Sabrina says she enjoys shopping, four wheelers, and hanging out with friends. She plans to major in accounting at college, and we wish Sabrina all the best in the future.
Thanks, Brittany! On our
Golden Bear calendar this week, the math team is in action today down in Ames.
Then tomorrow intramural basketball resumes, with two big games.
Boys basketball districts begin on Monday, but the Bears have a bye in
the opening round. The school board
meets on Tuesday, and that afternoon FFA members will participate in the
shopping cart race at Hy-Vee.
Tuesday night is the second round of girls basketball playoffs.
Game time is 7pm in Lake Park.
Then Thursday the Bears host two boys playoff games.
The Bears will take on West Hancock in the 8:00 game that night.
The girls regional semi-final is Friday night in Newell, and we hope the
Bears are still playing in that game. Then
on Saturday there’s a choir clinic at Waldorf College.
That’s the “Bear Facts” for this week.
Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to catch our next show, when we’ll
bring you more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
