"The Bear Facts"
JANUARY 15, 2000

Good morning! I’m Steven Kellner!

I’m Sarah Schmitt!

And I’m Jeff Hellman! Welcome to another episode of the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

There have been lots of honors lately for Bishop Garrigan’s musicians. Forty-two Garrigan and Seton students were selected for the fifth annual Diocesan Honor Band. Students from throughout the Sioux City Diocese will be meeting at Buena Vista University next Wednesday, January 19. They’ll have a full day of rehearsals, followed by a special evening concert performance. Among the Garrigan students who will be participating are seniors Katie Patterson, Tyler Struck, Louie Bode, Jennifer Reinhart, and Josh Harp. The qualifying juniors were Brooke Buscherfeld, Angie Kohlhaas, Lori Elsbecker, Amanda Freking, Lynn Kohlhaas, Annette Long, Andi Kramer, Tanya Broesder, and Marian Studer.

Seven sophomores will be attending the Diocesan Honor Band. They are Mandy Rahm, Ashley Schiltz, Rebecca McGuire, Chris Kohlhaas, Josh Dittrich, Mike McAlpine, and Kevin Marso. There’s also a big group of honored freshmen, including Nellie Fowler, Josh Hellman, Autumn Thompson, Jeff Hellman, and Steven Kellner. In addition to all those Garrigan students, eleven middle-schoolers from Seton will also be going to the Sioux City Diocese Honor Band.

Two of these Garrigan musicians were also honored at the North Iowa Bandmasters’ Association Honor Band, which was held last week in Mason City. Junior Angie Kohlhaas was selected to the elite group on the clarinet, while sophomore Rebecca McGuire performed on the bassoon at the honor band. Congratulations to all these outstanding musicians!

Band isn’t the only activity with honors. Four members of the BGHS a cappella choir were also recently honored. Seniors Tyler Struck, Corrie Stetzel, Wade MacDonald, and Eric Becker were selected to attend the Dorian Music Festival, which was held last weekend at Luther College in Decorah. Congratulations to them.

The Bishop Garrigan quiz bowl team had a great day last Saturday, when they ended up in fifth place overall out of forty-two teams entered in the Eagle Grove Invitational Tournament. The team was undefeated in the preliminaries, and they made it past the first round of the play-offs before eventually falling to South Hamilton. Team members included sophomore captain Bob Brandenburg, senior Tyler Struck, and freshmen Steven Kellner and Mike Blocker. Congratulations to them!

Intramural action started last week, with three big games. David Monson’s team trounced Kelly Kunkel’s team 105 to 21. Andrew Hellman’s team beat Adam Rahm’s team 36 to 30, and Chad Mescher’s team outlasted Ben Meyer’s team 41 to 39. Tomorrow there are three more big games scheduled. Eric Becker’s team will face Chris Kohlhaas’ team in the first match-up. Eric’s team includes Louie Bode, Jesse Walker, Justin Frideres, Ben McGuire, Joe Mayer, Nathan Frideres, Derrick Frideres, and Josh Forburger. Chris’ teammates are Adam Cink, Chris Girres, Mike McAlpine, and Mark Rasmussen.

In Sunday’s second game, Ben Meyer’s team will face Jason Geving’s team. We told you about Ben’s team last week. Jason’s team is made up of Bryan McAlpine, Sam Lickteig, Ed Elbert, Dennis Gisch, Chris Weir, Shannon Hall, Russ Vaske, and P.J. Vaske. The final game tomorrow will pit Chad Mescher’s team against Jake Kohlhaas’ team. Jake’s is the final intramural team we need to introduce. It includes Josh Harp, Duane MacGregor, Trent Youngwirth, Matt Rahm, Nick Roethler, Brandon Donahe, and Wade MacDonald.

Two of Garrigan’s seniors will be graduating at semester time, so our Senior Spotlight this week shines on them—Mike Marso and Nicole Vaske. Here to tell you about them is Joe Hellman.

Mike Marso comes to Garrigan from the St. Joe area. He helps out at church and at school liturgies. When he’s not at school, Mike enjoys 4-H, working on the farm, and a coon hunting club. Pretty soon you may see him putting the hammer down on the open road, because after graduating he’ll be going to truck-driving school. We wish Mike the very best of luck.

Nicole Vaske is an Algona native whose main activities have been choir and cheerleading. Away from school, you may have seen her working at the Good Samaritan Center in Algona. Nicole plans a career in nursing, and she’ll be studying at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Good luck in the future, Nicole!

Thanks, Joe! On our Golden Bear calendar, tonight the girls’ basketball team will be hosting North Iowa. Then tomorrow intramurals resume.

Monday the second semester begins. That night the freshman basketball teams play at Emmetsburg. Then on Tuesday we’ll have auditions for the Pops Concert.

Tuesday night the school board meets. Then on Wednesday there’s the Diocesan Honor Band in Storm Lake. Wednesday night the freshman basketball teams host Humboldt and the JV players travel to West Bend/Mallard.

Next Friday there’s a big basketball blowout in Friedmann Auditorium, as the Bears host Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. All night long the track team will be hosting a Belgian waffle supper in the school cafeteria. Then next Saturday, there’s district large-group speech.

Finally this week, the Iowa High School Athletic Association recently announced the school sportsmanship ratings from last fall’s football season. We’re pleased to say that Garrigan’s players, coaches, and spectators all received outstanding sportsmanship ratings. Congratulations, everybody!

That’s the “Bear Facts” for this week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School!
