Good morning! I'm Rachel Studer!
And I'm Jessica Richter! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts," the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Semester tests are over, and it's time for the second semester to begin. For the seniors, that means it's time for open campus. Open campus, or "O.C." allows seniors to leave the building if they have a study hall at the beginning or end of the day second semester. Almost every senior has O.C., and many of them are looking forward to sleeping late in the morning or earning some extra money at their jobs in the afternoon.
In addition to O.C., lots of seniors are in and out of the building to take college classes. This semester about twenty Garrigan students are studying at tha Iowa Lakes Algona Center, getting a head start on their college careers. They're in a wide variety of classes, but math and science are by far the most popular areas. There are twelve BGHS seniors enrolled in Statistics alone, not to mention a handful from Algona High. It probably helps that Garrigan math teacher David Burrow teaches Stats at Iowa Lakes, so the students have a pretty good idea what they're getting into up front.
Again this semester Garrigan will be joining with other Catholic schools in western Iowa to offer new and different classes over the Iowa Communications Network. Senior Adam Foertsch and freshman Chris Kohlhaas will be continuing their study of Russian under an instructor from St. Ed's in Fort Dodge. Garrigan P.E. teacher Marty Wadle will be teaching Athletic Training over the ICN, with nine students here at Garrigan and a dozen more in Fort Dodge and Council Bluffs. This spring's other ICN offering is Music Appreciation.
With the new semester beginning, there are a few faces changing in the BGHS junior class. Mindy Erpelding has moved to Carroll, where she'll be attending Kuemper High School, and exchange student Simone Adler will be heading back to Germany. One new student will be joining the junior class, though. We're pleased to welcome Derrick Frideres, who comes to Garrigan from Corwith-Wesley-Luverne.
Derrick has been fiercely recruited by several intramural basketball teams. Intramurals began last Sunday, and the fast-paced action was everything we expected it would be. The two teams we featured on last week's show both raced to triple-digit victories. Team C, with Jay Servantez as its captain, set a new intramural record, by racking up 147 points, to their opponents' 18. Meanwhile Joe Lucas' team mauled David Monson's team 112 to 29. In other action, Team G (captained by Eric Becker) outlasted Team F (whose captain is Jake Kohlhaas), 55 to 35.
This year's intramurals includes two all-freshman teams. Team B showed extremely good sportsmanship in their pounding last Sunday. Their captain is Chris "Flounder" Kohlhaas, and they call themselves "The Flock". Team members include Tony Detrick, Kevin Lind, Adam Cink, Kyle Wieland, Mark Rasmussen, and Chris Girres. The other freshman team is designated "H", and their captain is Michael Loebach. His teammates are fellow freshmen Tyler Trenary, Greg Fowler, Adam Rahm, Matt Golwitzer, and Chuck Bormann. Good luck to both of these teams.
Last Saturday the Golden Bear quiz bowl team had their best finish of the season, as they ended up around fifth in the 38-team Eagle Grove Invitational Quiz Bowl. The Bears finished the preliminary rounds with 7 wins and only 1 loss. In the first round of the play-offs they beat Humboldt to fight their way into the "Elite Eight" of the tournament. They eventually lost to Fort Dodge Senior High in the quarter-final round. Junior Louie Bode served as team captain last Saturday, and helping him to victory were seniors Mark Anderson and Andrew Brunsen and freshman Bob Brandenburg. Congratulations!
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Lisa Rasmussen and Jenny Hall. Here with all the latest on them is Bob Brandenburg.
Hi. Lisa Rasmussen is a National Honor Society member who has also won awards in English and Chemistry. Over the years her number one activity has been band, where she has also been very successful. Lisa has also been involved in track and the Diocesan youth rally. She has worked for the Des Moines Register, and she enjoys babysitting. Lisa will be off to college next year, and we wish her all the best.
Jenny Hall is a life-long Algona native whose school activities have included cheerleading and swing choir. She says that in her free time she likes to relax and hang out with friends. Jenny likes her English classes, but she's not a big fan of math. We wish Jenny the very best in the future.
Thanks, Bob! On this week's Golden Bear calendar, there's girls' basketball tonight, with the Bears traveling to Buffalo Center to face the North Iowa Bison.
Tomorrow afternoon intramurals continue. Monday the freshman basketball teams host Emmetsburg, and then on Tuesday we'll have a jeans day to raise money for the student gift to Gala '99.
Tuesday night the school board meets, and also that night the varsity Bears will host Pocahontas. Then on Wednesday the freshman teams play Humboldt.
Next Thursday juniors in the confirmation program will receive the Rite of Passage. Then on Friday the Bears will travel to Fort Dodge for a four-game match-up with St. Ed's.
Finally next Saturday speech season begins. Garrigan will travel to Graettinger for district large-group contest.
That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School!
